I'm sure there are even more similarities but these are what come to mind from memory. DMCV could have just been a new game with a new story but it went the route of jerking itself off over past games with nonstop references and homages which made it fricking boring
do all DMC games have horrible and boring level design, or is that just 5?I've only played 5, I liked the combat(with Dante, at least) and some bosses were cool but everything inbetween was awful
4 has okay levels until you have to replay them all in reverse for the second half of the game because they ran out of time. 3 has my favorite levels since most of it takes place inside the tower and you're spending your time trying to reach the top. 3 feels the most like a metroidvania because of the tower's design. 5's levels are really visually boring because they made the dumbass decision to put most of the levels inside the qliphoth root and it all looks the same. I think it also has the most linear, tunneled levels of all the games. DMC1 is a mixed bag with some really shitty levels, but mostly good ones.

Almost all of the real nostalgia wanks from 5 weren't even in the games previously. Before 5 we'd never even seen the night Eva died or heard Vergil so much as reference her, for people who didn't go out of their way to read decade-old unfinished manga this was completely new, as was the Vergil/Nero connection (which people at the time of 4's release argued against constantly), plus everything else it integrated from extended "DMC lore" like Nell's entire existence or the method for creating a demon king, 5 literally expanded the world more than every other game.
The Vergil/Nero connection was essentially confirmed in DMC4SE. Nell was a huge part of the two novels. I guess the difference is that I'm actually a fan of this series and engaged with the manga and novels and shit before 5 ever happened, so most of the "new" stuff in 5 wasn't new to me

I'm playing DMC3 for first time today on steam. What style should I pick as a noob who only played 1,4 and 5 on normal mode once?
The styles are essentially in order of difficulty/complexity. Trickster is your dodge with generous i-frames. Swordmaster gives you more offensive options, especially in the air which is the safest place to be. Gunslinger was made to be about crowd control but can be low on damage until you get good. Royal guard is extremely high risk and high reward, you need great timing to block and build royal gauge, as well as great timing for royal release.
Swordmaster. Trickster is a noob trap, Royal Guard takes hours to master and Gunslinger requires you to rebind some buttons.
if you've played 4 and 5 you should have at least a general idea of what styles do. and all of them are shit until you get at least level 2 anyway. royalguard is the strongest, swordmaster has the most utility, and trickster is great until you get used to enemy attacks. gunslinger is shit unless you have a controller with back buttons or godtier dexterity, then you can do some crazy shit.
Use Trickster, get those wall run combos going

She was also integrated into the plot as well as she could be, with her trauma from killing her father being so life-ruining that Dante spends the whole game trying to get Nero to frick off so he doesn't have to go through the same thing. Her scene where she says as much to Nero in the van, while sort, is easily the best character moment she's had since DMC3.

nope, I think there are a couple mods or tweaks to make the visuals closer to the originals but nothing important.

For DMC1 and 3 there are some audio and visual glitches but they are pretty small. Also a couple of gameplay glitches but again, nothing that you might notice if you didn't play the originals.

He would constantly try to dissuade him from pursuing Urizen, and later Vergil. DMC1 Dante is perfection.
So I played the first, second and third games.
The first game has a cool atmosphere and music, an ok story but in 2022, it’s genuinely not fun to play most of it after the first 4-5 chapters except the Nelo Angelo fights. The bosses other than him are terrible and the game has too many terrible gimmick sections.
The second game is an embarassment in almost everything, Dante’s outfit is cool, some of the level design is cool, some bosses have cool designs and the final boss is better in gameplay department than the first’s but they genuinely fricked everything else up.
The third game is pretty good. Combat is great, characters are neat, story is pretty good and the styles are actually all fun (didn’t try Royalguard yet, not gud enough for that) and the game has the courtesy of making half of the bosses good/great and only Leviathan, whale stomach,shadow thing and the blob thing with Vergil were weak. It’s not perfect, there is a significant quality drop mission 15 onwards until the last mission but still the game is overall great time for 75% of it, especially coming after the second game.
What will I think of the fourth and fifth games?
4th's combat is good but the story and characters uninteresting and half the missions are lame backtracking
5th's combat is nothing special but the game looks nice but uninspiring, and characters are shittier versions of what they were

There is an optional recap video that pretty much gets you up to speed when it comes to the story. Though I do think that you'll be shooting yourself in the foot a bit in you don't play 3 and 4. If you don't care about the story though, you can just hop on and play 5. It's probably the most accessible of the bunch and there's a training mode called the Void, where you can practice your moves and combos.
Don't listen to the first gay, play the games and you'll se it for yourself. If you can, do DmC in between.

More than half his interactions with Lady come off as him wanting to get in her pants, and his only interaction with Nevan is literally them getting very touchy with each other.

It's time for me to shit on DMCV again by pointinout everything I hate about it. One of the main things that botheres me is how washed out all the colors in the game are in any given level. Sure, you'll have a level which is red, another that is blue, and another that is grey. But pretty much the entire level is that color, with little to no color contrast. It's shit design.
DMC3 had the exact same problem, with everything being grey, black, and sometimes white. Yet, for whatever reason it doesn't get nearly as much shit for it as it should. On top of a convoluted level design and emphasis on backtracking.
DmC looked better.
