You can make realistic good looking kemono. The problem here is that they used humanoid skull + human ears, if they used cat ears and cat shaped skull + snoot it would look much better.
Most Kemono, and anthro characters in general, have human face shapes. Kemono art gets it easy because it’s highly stylized and simplified, meaning lack of facial definition, but translating that to 3D is difficult because 2D stylization rarely works in 3D and even less so when aiming for realism. It reminds me of Kimoko from Fortnite where she has the typical Kemono style but done in 3D and it doesn’t look as good.
Nip furries have it easy because lots of styles of human anime characters are halfway to a cat's snout already. But that still doesn't excuse putting human ears on the beastren.
Japanese have a concept known as a "furry bad end" where a plot point or ending is good, but seen as bad / undesired to the furries, often involving an ending where a character is turned back human / into a human at the end of the movie / show. a good western example would be beauty and the beast, or on the lower end of the scale the little mermaid even I guess.

No, he wouldn't. The issue is that the audience doesn't grow attached to the human design, they grow attached to the Beast, and the beast's design is endearing. No matter what you do, if you spend the entirety of a work getting the audience used to a character, they're not going to like it when you take that character away. It's the same reason why there's always such a negative reaction to a helmeted character like Master Chief taking off the helmet; that's the character design the audience likes. If you frick with it to the point of unrecognizability, that's effectively a new character you have to get the audience used to.
Despite the lips, I actually liked the human design. Being a boy, I didn't identify with Belle, I identified with the beast. And so I was glad that he turned into a (mostly) handsome man and didn't stay stuck as the beast, because kid me also didn't want to be a big hunchbacked monster.

I never really understood this idea, you already have different models and animations for every single enemy in the game. Walking cycles are a diamond dozen, and in this game they are generated procedurally via pose sliders in the CC so you don't really have to change much other than generate it to be springier in the heel (rather than animating it from scratch)
