After watching Ross' Clans video, I got an urge to try Diablo 1. He mentions how great the atmosphere and story is in it and I'm feeling extra comfy playing.
The simplicity of playing a warrior and talking to everyone in the town with their own personalities as well as the oppressive darkness and violence of the dungeon makes a really compelling gameplay loop.
I thought I'd get sick of walking to different vendors around the town but they always had fun things to say and you got a glimpse of what they are thinking about and how your questing is their last hope.
Do any of the other diablos or Diablo clones carry this same feeling of fighting against darkness for the people around you? Is there a reason to play the remake over the original 2?
Throne of darkness was another game I liked that was similar from that time
Divine Divinity kinda and beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity 2 I really liked way back when
Inquisitor though this game is very difficult and tedious for whatever reason
Arcanum kinda
Did you play Revenant? From 1999. I played the demo and loved it, but never got the full game.
Can't say I did anon but it looks fun I used to buy alot of these games from the bargin bins at eb games they were usually $10 I remember one game though that was weird called dink Smallwood though I think I got that from a demo cd or something as a free full game
>Throne of darkness
Absolutely brilliant video game, I spent my last innocent year playing this game before I became a teenager. Summer nights with the gentle warm breeze blowing in, not a care in the world, crushing Gaki and harvesting Kappa Shells and Oni Ichor. Nothing hurt yet, nothing to miss. Thanks anon, I needed this reminder tonight.
Kek it was the first strategy guide I ever got I think it was $2 on sale and I read it from cover to cover multiple times before I even got the game anon
Didn't help by the time I did get the game because I'm an idiot but I do feel like I'd be better playing it now
This aesthetic is what oldheads want back. We will never get it btw.
>warrior
I see you didn't reach endgame yet if you're so full of praise for Diablo 1 while playing warrior.
I literally quit on the last level after clearing the whole fricking thing as warrior and spawning Diablo and that b***h homie brought a ton of ranged adds with him. So tedious and gay
I like how simple he is at the beginning. Finding a big axe and clobbering demons is fun but I am realizing that one handed weapons with shields are the only real viable option. Leveling up magic just enough to get utility spells like healing is very fun though.
I got murdered by Leohric since I was using an axe but after talking to the Blacksmith I tried a mace with a shield instead and destroyed him. It felt good to figure that out. I can see the end game being monotonous but so far I'm having a blast.
Later you're basically forced to play the bow because half the enemies will be ranged units which run away when you get close. Otherwise the game becomes just extremely tedious. At that moment you realize the warrior is by far the worst class and that the game is so archaic that it didn't even give the canon class a fair option to deal with ranged units.
I found archer gameplay very boring, arrows are infinite, got tired of mashing fire button, bind autoshot on right trigger, you a walking machinegun now and can literally faceroll the whole game with minimal kiting. Fighter walkthrough was much more intense.
Warrior plays basically the same, you just have to chuck tons of potions in between since you have to tank tons of damage. It's kinda unreal what a step up Diablo 2 in options is.
No, absolutely not. A pack of 6 succubi will nullify your potion stash in no time. You need first to observe the group from the distance, then rush, choosing the victim and trying to hit it in the way, so it will retreat aside separating from the group. You have a few seconds for such rush, no more. Then you chase the victim, push it to the corner and punch it to death. And every enemy type has unique attack-retreat behaviour, this is the strongest point if D1. Playing this kind of tag, deciding would I be able to tank this small remaining group or not - really intense and satisfying experience. And with archer you just getting to the shot distance and wait for the enemies to die one by one. With bear bow (pushing back enemies) - you need zero kiting.
I guess only on Ganker you will find someone contrarian enough to praise having to corner ever single ranged enemy to kill them. Everyone else was too smart and just switched between ranged and melee which is pretty fun in itself.
warrior is strong start, weak end
rogue is ok start, ok end
wizard is weak start, strong end
learn your classes
warriors can stunlock triple immunes, teleporting if necessary to attack ranged monsters
rogues can stunlock triple immunes
sorcerers have to use golems+stone curse against triple immunes
if you're playing singleplayer and not spamming new games or duping books, sorceror is RNG power level because it depends so heavily on what spells you get
Doesn't Adria reset her inventory every time you come back from the dungeon? So you're only limited by how much gold you have as a sorcerer. I do think he really shines in multiplayer however.
Diablo 1 is awesome, there's no game really like it around since everyone copied D2 instead. I replay it every now and then and it's always a great time. I recommend playing the multiplayer mode sometime too, it's a lot harder than single player so it makes for a different experience.
>Is there a reason to play the remake over the original 2?
There's no remake, only a remaster for 2. It's pretty much the same game but with new graphics.
Literally just cast some Fire Walls if you hate kiting ranged enemies so much. They let all classes use any item/spell for a reason.
it really is a shame that no games tried copying D1. the only game that gave me the same vibe was Throne of Darkness, but it's still different due to the large open spaces and multiple protagonists
nicely done
There's a bunch of old mmos that copied d1.
Darkeden, astonia iii, ashen empires, the 4th coming - to name some.
I beat the game only once and it was with the warrior. Never found it all that difficult.
He is not difficult, just either tedious or you have to betray your class and play with tools of the other classes to deal with ranged units.
Not that hard.
Only really one annoying enemy in the last area. Key word: annoying, not difficult.
I still gravitate towards the warrior. I've beaten the game with the Rogue and Sorcerer once. I've beaten it many times as a warrior.
>I played Diablo because of some YouTuber
have a nice day
I only played it when a was younger so I could collect my brothers ears and be the best warrior mage of all time.
Play PS1 version, resolution is low, but the direct control from a stick is too cool to return to the mouse. Finished it with pure fighter (zero magic), playing tag with succubi and liches in the endgame was a lot of fun.
Is there a reason to play the remake over the original 2?
I really like Diablo 2 Resurrected. The artstyle is impeccable and the lighting makes some areas much spookier than they are in the original.
D1 was a lot of fun though. Warriorchads rise up. Yeah you are expected to carry a bow or have a ranged attack once you get to the caves and into Hell, but that's the point of the game. You are expected to hybridize and be ready for the unexpected.
> Warriorchads rise up. Yeah you are expected to carry a bow
> no magic
> no bow
> all inventory is potions
> gigachad.png
I tried that
but literally ragequit when Diablo spawned with his ranged homies. I spent hours clearing that last level too lmao
>After watching Ross' Clans video
stopped reading there. frickin zoomers.
play the hd mod (Tchernobog) it has better resolution, features and has better replayable loot (like gems and recipes). It has the best parts of diablo 1 & 2 combined
Tchernobog leans too hard on the homosexual grind and custom classes. It doesn't even have the restored quests from Belzebub.
>rogue = woman
>wizard = Black person
welp looks like we're playing warrior boys
wizard and rogue are cool stand-ins though
If you want an interesting challenge, start as a level 1 Sorc on Hell difficulty. Unfortunately, Warrior and Rogue can't hit a damn thing, so it doesn't work for them unless you want to cheat in some spells or a staff.
Rogue has sexy voice.
>betray your class
You can use everything as every class for a reason.
>You can use everything as every class for a reason.
I don't remember exactly how it was but I believe ranged weapons usually didn't scale with strength so you felt cucked having to play larger parts of the endgame with a weapon unsuited for your class.
Warriors just shoot bows slowly. I've always just corralled enemies or lured them around corners while swinging my sword at the air like a madman. Fast Attack Speed makes things a lot easier.
Ah yeah it was the weapon speed that was affected. Diablo couldn't even be killed if you didn't hit fast enough.
What is the video? I always want to watch Diablo 1 content.
Ross's Game Dungeon video on Clans. Not Diablo 1 content, but a very good review of a forgotten Diablo clone. Worth a watch.
Diablo 1 and 2 are the only ones in the genre worth playing. Everything else misses the point. Even diablo 2 did in some ways.
I treat Diablo 1 & 2 like Terminator/Alien 1 & 2, first is horror and the other is action, but they're both great, just... different
Based and correct.
Only downside is that most morons only care for the wide-appeal action and spectacle focused sequel, so more of that type of thing is all that gets released in future.
ok so this thread made me go back and kill diablo on my warrior. kino ending voiceover/cutscene
It is cool
The village guitar music
Unironically video games peaked decades ago. I'm not crying you're crying
>Unironically video games peaked decades ago.
Truth. Thankfully my personal computer, PS1, PS2, PC, Xbox360 libraries are vast and I have the hardware and accessories. I play a new game every month from one of the categories and have about 350 unplayed on hand physically (although I had one a month to that as well)so enough for about 29 years or a bit less if I treat myself to an extra one now and again.
>cover
End yourself, you worthless twat.
Anyone else that didn't like the Hellfire content? It thematically just didn't fit the game. I rather had if they expanded some of the floors of the main game.
agreed. the insect level did not fit thematically. I didn't even do the other dungeon cause the insect jawn was so uh oh stinky
other dungeon was much better (crypt), although does not compare to the original 4 floor-types
because it made by Sierra, not Blizzard. But the musics good at least (same composer)
>Anyone else
very few liked it
>Hellfire
Even Blizzard pretended that didn't happen.
Throne if Darkness is pretty awesome. Most people never played it because it came out shortly after Diablo 2's expansion
The Belzebub mod is kino
that and TH1 are the only ones worth playing. all the other mods stray too far from the base game for my tastes
DevilutionX is a bugfix/straight port to modern systems of Diablo 1, and is also doing the really cool thing of making all quests available in multiplayer.
https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX/issues/926
Check the bottom of the page. The quests part is being worked on as we speak.
yeah DX slipped my mind, I was more thinking of mods with large gameplay changes
Hell yeah brothers.
>Restores old quests
It really is. I respect that mod and Median XL for acknowledging D1 cut content
sword
Any ARPG recommendations?
Clans actually seems interesting, aside from all the insane decisions required to beat it
I played d2, and at some later point went back. I was filtered by the move speed. I later found out that is something you improve with items, but never bothered to pick it up again.
you can also improve it easily through class abilities - barb hard stat in run walk speed, paladin with running aura, sorc with teleport, frickin all sorts of shit my brotha
I mean I was filtered by diablo 1 move speed after having already played 2. I never had too much complaint about D2s movement. Presumably that was a self-conscious fix between games/
It may feel a little clunky at first, but once you get past the first few levels you recognize how deliberate it is. Walking in town is a good break from the dungeon to me. But no, there is no way to improve your movement speed without finding a tome of teleportation.
woops
I like the points you brought up about this game
as I am 40 and have basically failed in life, I am subject to nostalgia often. I played video games since 1986 and my family always had every console, as well as me having PC early
Let me tell you, that the satisfaction and freshness and the unique feeling of Diablo 1 that first night I played it, still stands out in my memory. I remember buying it from Electronics Boutique in the mall and then my mom went across the street to buy stuff from wal-mart. I sat in the car reading the manual in the dark car, in the rain, and I remember ogling the intensely hot rogue drawing.
That thwack when you twang a bowstring and strike a skeleton for the first time in Diablo 1 is something really hard to replicate in gaming history. The feeling of it stands above most experiences that were available to be had with video games in history. I am glad you are enjoying it now.
Isn't the Tristram music something else? Even today. If you liked Diablo 1 you'll like Diablo 2. Don't play the remake. Skip D3.
If I could recommend other games that gave me this height of feeling they'd probably range far and wide through time, platforms and genres.
I feel the same way man. I started with the shareware demo though. There was always something so damn magical about demos like that
I was playing it when I was 4 years old with my dad in the room because it was too scary and he was a big computer and D&D nerd. He kept a bunch of Universal Monster figures that he painted as a kid in a display case right next to the computer and they were just eye level with 4 year old me, which made the game extra scary because you had dracula with a bloody grimace looking right at you.
4 years old cmon you didnt play d1 at that age. my 5 year old barely could
I mean, I never got past the first floor, but I was still playing it. Even played Starcraft 1 and Red Alert when they came out
that's cute 😛
i've been seeing my 5 y/o get better at mario and I'm amazed
Enjoy it anon, I'm of the opinion a big chunk of atmosphere was lost between Diablo 1 and 2. The latter's gameplay expansion and true start of the 'Diablo clicking grindfest' plus more out there story and characters makes the first one's small Tristram and experimental more grounded gameplay stand out.
By the way, how tired are you guys of anything remotely dark and medieval being compared to Souls nowadays? It's like you can't escape it, even if your game's combat isn't stamina based or tries completely different things like a focus on puzzles or whatever; as long as "moody knight" is on the screen idiots will love/dismiss the game as following Mitsubishi's spotlight. We need more games like this, and ironically less Souls.
I always wanted to play as the hot chick mercenary from Diablo 2's Act 1, and Diablo 1's rogue class is literally her, the same sprite even. So that was awesome, she seemed like the best class too.
Anyhow, you want to grab some mods, there's that one HUGE mod that adds a lot of gameplay features like a shared stash and better menus and QoL, and restores a lot of cut content including whole areas like that pocket dimension with wizards and shit. The game was rushed and had a frickton of cut content and asset still left on the disk, and the mod restores all that. Just forgot what it was called, played it years ago. It adds HD and widescreen support too.
The base game is just okay, but incredibly barebones. IMO there's no reason to play without mods nowadays.
You're talking about the Belzebub mod. The restored content is welcome, but the mod overall has major balance issues.
>play warrior in D1
>wow this is fun!
>goat archers show up
>wow I fricking hate this
>eventually get further and make it to hell
>demons that shoot lightning show up
>wow I really, really fricking hate this
>stop playing
It's worth it when you get to level 16 and are one-shotting the Hell Knights.
lmao fricking saved
It is dope stun locking those knight kBlack folk as a chad warrior
>the towns water fountain has been poisoned
>get to the cave full of goat bastards that poisoned it
>they can kill me in just a few hits
>this starts playing
>turn corner in caves
>entire room is maelstroms
>1:06 hits
FRESH
I never had a PC at home as a kid but once I went to a friend and I tried D1, that's when my eyes opened
