I do my grail for about 2 years now, but i took 5 year break inbetween. Took me a year to get it to 16 items remaining but i lost save and had to restart from 25 backup. About 2-3 hours each day on average, and I did it with all classes, all into 90s with necro and javazon being tops with 94 and 95. Nowadays only 1-2 runs with necro, my route is 85 areas >the pit >ancient tunnels >river of flame + chaos sanctuary >worldstone keep and finish with baal

Occassionally I run pindle and nihlathak with frenzy barb, good to take a break from corpse explo
And yes, teleport with summon necro is mandatory, the merc and minion pathfinding is not working. So either najs puzzler, tele charge items or Enigma 🙂

what about assassin? I'm in act 4 rn and the sentry that shoots lightning bolts is amazing, I found out that there's a combo with 4x light sentry + 1x corpse explosion sentry, I'll try that. I'm playing with PlugY so it's pretty nice to have respeccing on the go.

You can beat the game with a summon necro naked. Max skelly warrior, skelly mastery, and clay golem. You can respec later to iron golem when you become rich and can afford throwaway runeword iron golems. Max out Corpse Explosion. 1 point in all curses that are pre requisite to decrepify.
So what you do is hang back and let your summons drop a body, and then corpse explosion to clear out remaining enemies. Use Amp Damage as your primary curse (it also breaks physical immunity). Use Decrep when you’re getting swarmed and need more crowd control
well, I tried the necro but the style is kinda boring. I ended up with the r*ddit trapsin and so far so good. I'm saving Cain's ass rn. It's really good and wasn't expecting such an old game to be so immersive.
Well what are you trying to get out of this game? If youre just gonna run through the game under Normal difficulty then you can literally use any character. You only really need a "build" if you are trying to get all the way through Hell difficulty. 9/10 new players stop after Act V Normal
Just make a frozen orb sorc then. You can gear yourself up from farming mephisto. If you’re gonna complete the grail you will need a sorc anyway

You’d have to learn to adjust, yes. Sorc is by FAR the best choice for farming, especially when just starting out. A little learning curve is to be expected.
Also, holy grail is no joke— if you’re seriously planning on committing to that then learning how to play as a sorc is absolutely essential unless you want to spend the next 20 years trying to complete it.

you’ll be slamming mana pots till the a5(ish) normal. Then you farm an insight for your merc, make a spirit sword, and you can get some decent uniques off Andy in nightmare, like a duskshroud and magefists/frostburns. Try to max your resists with whatever else and you can ride that through hell and use it to farm stuff to build wealth and make a better farmer

There is something I forgot. If you're a new player and want to know ways to get some easy magic find gear without waiting to get magic find equips there are some easy and effective ways. Four socket body armor with four perfect topaz in them, same with a helm but those only go up to three sockets. Later on, especially when you get to act 1 nightmare, you can shop for around 20% magic find gloves and boots. Nightmare Countess can also drop a shael rune to help with some magic find on a shield.
This helps so you aren't waiting around trying to find magic find uniques when you have almost no magic find of your own.

turned 36 at the start of the year, and never finished act 2....the quality dropped so fricking much after act 1 its not even funny...people say dooms e1 vs e2 & 3 was bad, but it has nothing on d2s act1

Farming in D2 doesnt really happen until your around the late 70's and youre able to run Countess for runes and then farmm Hell Mephisto/Cows/Chaos Sanctuary/Baal. Assasin can MF but it is less than ideal for that role. Sorc/Pally/Necro are the standard, and then you have your niche characters like frenzy barb or javazon that require high end gear
Smite and zeal are some of the best builds in the game. Both rely on health back on hit to survive so you can face tank stuff. Pick one or the other based on how you want to play or what you’re doing: smite can’t be blocked but you target one thing at a time. Really good if you’re locked on a boss. Zeal doesn’t always hit but you can hit multiple things so it is more comfy for clearing packs of baddies. I think you need slightly more ideal gear to make a viable zealer but smiters can run be made on food stamps and clear all bosses assuming you can get your ass in close and start hitting
For normal only, going Sacrifice+20 Prayer+1 Cleansing/Meditation and then stacking Safety crafted items (For the reduced damage taken mod) makes the entire game a breeze. Most stuff either fails to damage you, does a single point of damage, and if you take spell damage your HP rapidly regenerates anything lost.
If you've ever played Path of Exile, it's like a high mana regen The Agnostic build, 99% of things you regenerate so fast they can't kill you, but your build falls apart as soon as something can overcome it or deal massive burst damage.
maybe its my rotten brain after a decade of path of exile but even back in the early 2000's when I played d2 the item progression always felt wrong. the generic items, even stuff like shako/arach let alone the other less common items felt way to easy to acquire but the other "big" progression items like high runes for runewords felt binary in terms of progression. you cant work towards a ber for example other than maybe find an ohm/lo/jah. you can grind for a whole day without getting anywhere, then on the next day your character can be finished in just a few days if you are lucky. thats way to extreme. gold/perfect gems would have been an interesting way to work towards more rare stuff but its practially worthless compared to high runes. sorry for the rant, I understand most of you guys probably only play casually in sp. that kind of cancer gave room for shti like d2jsp.
it's basically slot machine game with fantasy flavor. You don't play it for gameplay, but literally when you're high on drugs and need to numb yourself for hour or two. fundamentally it's great game akin to classic arcades, it's easy, childish but also stupid.
d2jsp is a very large reason a 20+ year old game with repetitive gameplay is still played and loved. There is an actual reason to play this game and waste your time grinding. You can get actual credit to spend on other games. Or just flaunt it on next beards in chat. What is cancer is maxroll and streamers like llamasc. These idiots posting true ideal builds ruined a tradition. Every group of d2 players had their own take on what was ideal and how things work but nobody actually knew. What's the most enjoyable act in your opinion? I always loved Act III. The jungle, then finding travincal and then descending to beat the shit out of meph, everything is great about it imo.
Act I is tied with Act IV for me. II and III always seemed like a chore.
Now that I think about it, let’s go with Act V as my favorite. I’ll never forget buying the expansion on day 1 and playing through Act V. It just felt so epic and massive in scope at the time. Seeing the large scale battles taking place on the maps, rescuing barbarians, confronting Nihla, facing the Ancients, and the elation and Goosebumps from completing the throne room for the first time… Holy shit it’s just so good. And the score is great
oh yeah, act V has so much good stuff going for it. the icy cave, the fight with the guardians at the summit, the barbarians defending their homeland, imo it's longer than the rest but you don't get bored. I agree on the second act, that's probably my least favourite with the worst out of the 5 act bosses.
I really enjoy Act II, would be perfect if not for the maggot Lair. The Arcane Sanctuary blew my mind as a teenager and I always enjoyed going thru every single tomb of Tal Rasha to farm exp. The whole act is like The Mummy/Arabian Nights.
the maggot lair is such a big turn off but it makes you think for a bit since AoE skills don't work.

The only parts of the game I dislike are Act 2 Maggot Lair, Act 3 jungle and most of act 5. Act 5 just feels bad to me. Frozen River, Ancients and Worldstone are ok.
Bloody Foot Hills is good in Act V, then it's shit until you get to the ice caves. After that you get a shit section like Frozen Tundra, and then it gets good again.

PD2 is way better today then it use to be. Its the best "big" active mod for D2 by a fair margin IMO.
Def recommend playing it when the new patch lands.
Also, unlike Path of Diablo, its fully offline compatible still.
Is there any negative at all from playing Resurrected over LoD? The LOD 25fps cap is kinda jarring at times for me in single player. I know you can play TCP/IP for uncapped frame rate, but you lose your maps after each session
Ressurected is an altered game from LoD, on the other hand the game has changed through all of its patches. I think Ressurected is better but when it comes to 2D LoD looks better since Ressurected looks a little crunchy.

I have Sven’s wrapper, but single player is still capped at 25fps which is normal I believe because game logic is coded at 25fps. Battlenet and TCP/IP games are uncapped, but I’m trying to play single player offline because I like the idea of saving your good maps when you roll a great one for MF purposes.

I don't have a problem with resurrected except for the fact that Blizz is cashing in on nostalgia gays. I just wanted a new decent Diablo game that apparently will never happen so I stick with my LoD copy.

farming hell? lots of options there. depends on the build and the progress.
I'm level 75 now but have poor gear, I still wore an armor with Stealth so now I'm looking for shit with Resistances and to gear up my good old merc. Cows dropped some nice runes, tried a bit of Pindle runs but he didn't drop shit.
Nightmare Meph is good since you can get a lot of good gear from him while he isn't too hard. Skins of the Vipermagi, level 42 class specific gear, Rockstopper, Vampire Gaze, Duriels Shell, Shaftstop, and if you use a shield there is Moser's and you can shove two perfect diamonds into them.
Other things with runes if you haven't done it already: Lore helm with Ort + Sol, +1 to all skills and 30% lightening resistance.
Any 3 socket helm and just put in the resistances you need since Ral, Ort, and Thul give 30% resists in a helm. So if your low on lightening resist just put two or three Orts into it for 60%-90% resist for it.
Ancients pledge is the obvious one with Ral + Ort + Tal with 43+% resist all.
Smoke with Nef + Lum in armor will give you 50% resist all and you can get that from Hell Countess, if you're able to run her.hee.
A Rhyme shield with Shael + Eth for 25% resist all and cannot be frozen.
If you don't have a good weapon with plus skills you can make a spirit sword, and obviously when you enter Hell you'll probably want to make a spirit shield with the shield being the hard part to obtain.
Also you're an Assassin, use Cloak of Shadows as much as you wish. It doesn't work on uniques or champions, but at least it stops all other enemies in their tracks. Ranged enemies will stop shooting if you catch them in your cloak of shadows which should help a ton with survivability.
There’s very few viable mercs for LoD. You can make an A2 Insight, A2 Crushing Blow stacked merc (reapers roll, etc.), or an A2 Infinity. Any other recommendations are for meme builds
You can’t rely on the merc to clear out entire packs of enemies. The mercs are moronic, their main use is to clear out singular bosses or champion demons. They are there as a compliment to you, don’t depend on them entirely.
If you have monsters you can’t deal with either run away or buy a wand that has lower resist charges.
Just finished a bowzon playthrough. Somehow in my 20 years with this game I never played bowzon, even though I've played every other non meme build at least once. I ended up going with ice arrow/exploding arrow, so it was just massively shittier sorc. This is my single player plugy account so I had lots of powerful items for her. But even with shako, enigma, lycander's aim, soj, ravenfrost, maras, 2/20 gloves, aldur's boots, razortail, two skillers, anni and torch, infinity on merc, the damage was just bad. It was nice being able to deal with immune easily, and it was safe, but low damage. I tried physical in early hell but that was a hundred times worse. I had upped buriza and it was so ass. Couldn't kill anything. Do you need windforce or faith with a pride merc and gg charms + 40/15d for phys bowzon to work? I even had laying of hands, fortitude, gface and goreriders.
Anyway I really want to find another jah so I can do a tesladin
Yeah, there is a reason why 99% of bowzons are physical. The elemental abilities just outright underpreform. But, at least you can check that build off of your list.

dual element is a shit build. 10+ points cold arrow, then max freezing arrow and lightning fury. that's a very strong amazon. not pure bow though, so if that's a requirement consider max guided instead of lightning fury.
Like everyone else I used to hate the jungle part of act 3, but now it's my favorite part. Kurast is cool of course, but the sewers and especially durance of hate are the two worst areas of the game. Well, maggot lair too.

I made a Throw Barb as well. The updates made it very viable. The ability to pierce through his mastery and regenerate stock upon critical strike made it so good. It's the barbarian that actually has the ability to clear crowds the best.
Also Hydra is actually good since it doesn't have a cool down, and the changes to how charges work for the Assassin is great. The changes to the Amazon's passive dodging skills was good since you aren't locked into an animation anymore.
anyways, I just matriarch'd a Hydra-Orb sorc, been doing some Tunnes, the build is fun but the clear is kinda slow, I guess maybe because I don't really have much gear on me. I'd hate to respec to Blizz, however, played that shit all my life pretty much

Nothing that happens in the first 80 levels of arpgs is relevant to the grinding that happens afterwards

There is something I forgot. If you're a new player and want to know ways to get some easy magic find gear without waiting to get magic find equips there are some easy and effective ways. Four socket body armor with four perfect topaz in them, same with a helm but those only go up to three sockets. Later on, especially when you get to act 1 nightmare, you can shop for around 20% magic find gloves and boots. Nightmare Countess can also drop a shael rune to help with some magic find on a shield.
This helps so you aren't waiting around trying to find magic find uniques when you have almost no magic find of your own.

You need to teleport in order to efficiently farm in this game to complete the grail. In order to teleport with non sorcs you need a staff/anulet with charges (not efficient), or Enigma (ridiculously expensive).
turned 36 at the start of the year, and never finished act 2....the quality dropped so fricking much after act 1 its not even funny...people say dooms e1 vs e2 & 3 was bad, but it has nothing on d2s act1

Farming in D2 doesnt really happen until your around the late 70's and youre able to run Countess for runes and then farmm Hell Mephisto/Cows/Chaos Sanctuary/Baal. Assasin can MF but it is less than ideal for that role. Sorc/Pally/Necro are the standard, and then you have your niche characters like frenzy barb or javazon that require high end gear

Zeal Pally and FoH can be made with shitter gear. Smiter is probably the safest melee character in the game, but you need gear for it
Smite and zeal are some of the best builds in the game. Both rely on health back on hit to survive so you can face tank stuff. Pick one or the other based on how you want to play or what you’re doing: smite can’t be blocked but you target one thing at a time. Really good if you’re locked on a boss. Zeal doesn’t always hit but you can hit multiple things so it is more comfy for clearing packs of baddies. I think you need slightly more ideal gear to make a viable zealer but smiters can run be made on food stamps and clear all bosses assuming you can get your ass in close and start hitting
For normal only, going Sacrifice+20 Prayer+1 Cleansing/Meditation and then stacking Safety crafted items (For the reduced damage taken mod) makes the entire game a breeze. Most stuff either fails to damage you, does a single point of damage, and if you take spell damage your HP rapidly regenerates anything lost.
If you've ever played Path of Exile, it's like a high mana regen The Agnostic build, 99% of things you regenerate so fast they can't kill you, but your build falls apart as soon as something can overcome it or deal massive burst damage.
maybe its my rotten brain after a decade of path of exile but even back in the early 2000's when I played d2 the item progression always felt wrong. the generic items, even stuff like shako/arach let alone the other less common items felt way to easy to acquire but the other "big" progression items like high runes for runewords felt binary in terms of progression. you cant work towards a ber for example other than maybe find an ohm/lo/jah. you can grind for a whole day without getting anywhere, then on the next day your character can be finished in just a few days if you are lucky. thats way to extreme. gold/perfect gems would have been an interesting way to work towards more rare stuff but its practially worthless compared to high runes. sorry for the rant, I understand most of you guys probably only play casually in sp. that kind of cancer gave room for shti like d2jsp.
it's basically slot machine game with fantasy flavor. You don't play it for gameplay, but literally when you're high on drugs and need to numb yourself for hour or two. fundamentally it's great game akin to classic arcades, it's easy, childish but also stupid.

Just max holy fire and use it with zeal it doesn’t even matter what gear you use in normal since the game is a joke in that difficulty. You could probably beat the game with bare fists and holy fire.
What's the most enjoyable act in your opinion? I always loved Act III. The jungle, then finding travincal and then descending to beat the shit out of meph, everything is great about it imo.
Act I is tied with Act IV for me. II and III always seemed like a chore.
Now that I think about it, let’s go with Act V as my favorite. I’ll never forget buying the expansion on day 1 and playing through Act V. It just felt so epic and massive in scope at the time. Seeing the large scale battles taking place on the maps, rescuing barbarians, confronting Nihla, facing the Ancients, and the elation and Goosebumps from completing the throne room for the first time… Holy shit it’s just so good. And the score is great
oh yeah, act V has so much good stuff going for it. the icy cave, the fight with the guardians at the summit, the barbarians defending their homeland, imo it's longer than the rest but you don't get bored. I agree on the second act, that's probably my least favourite with the worst out of the 5 act bosses.
I really enjoy Act II, would be perfect if not for the maggot Lair. The Arcane Sanctuary blew my mind as a teenager and I always enjoyed going thru every single tomb of Tal Rasha to farm exp. The whole act is like The Mummy/Arabian Nights.
the maggot lair is such a big turn off but it makes you think for a bit since AoE skills don't work.

The only parts of the game I dislike are Act 2 Maggot Lair, Act 3 jungle and most of act 5. Act 5 just feels bad to me. Frozen River, Ancients and Worldstone are ok.
Bloody Foot Hills is good in Act V, then it's shit until you get to the ice caves. After that you get a shit section like Frozen Tundra, and then it gets good again.

PD2 is way better today then it use to be. Its the best "big" active mod for D2 by a fair margin IMO.
Def recommend playing it when the new patch lands.

Is there any negative at all from playing Resurrected over LoD? The LOD 25fps cap is kinda jarring at times for me in single player. I know you can play TCP/IP for uncapped frame rate, but you lose your maps after each session
Ressurected is an altered game from LoD, on the other hand the game has changed through all of its patches. I think Ressurected is better but when it comes to 2D LoD looks better since Ressurected looks a little crunchy.
I have Sven’s wrapper, but single player is still capped at 25fps which is normal I believe because game logic is coded at 25fps. Battlenet and TCP/IP games are uncapped, but I’m trying to play single player offline because I like the idea of saving your good maps when you roll a great one for MF purposes.

Resurrected is a mixed bag. Item art looks worse, some enemies look way worse, some spells look kinda shit, like lightning spells, Amazon and Paladin look horrible. I prefer LoD. Looks better on CRT monitor. And also, every LoD player should be using Sven's glide wrapper. It makes the game look and run better. It's also allowed on Battle.net
I don't have a problem with resurrected except for the fact that Blizz is cashing in on nostalgia gays. I just wanted a new decent Diablo game that apparently will never happen so I stick with my LoD copy.

As someone with zero nostalgic connection to D2 I agree that D2R is better in every way except for the removal of p2p multiplayer. If I want to use /players 8 I have to play offline, which is dogshit because I want to be able to play and trade with my friends.

I'm level 75 now but have poor gear, I still wore an armor with Stealth so now I'm looking for shit with Resistances and to gear up my good old merc. Cows dropped some nice runes, tried a bit of Pindle runs but he didn't drop shit.
Nightmare Meph is good since you can get a lot of good gear from him while he isn't too hard. Skins of the Vipermagi, level 42 class specific gear, Rockstopper, Vampire Gaze, Duriels Shell, Shaftstop, and if you use a shield there is Moser's and you can shove two perfect diamonds into them.
Other things with runes if you haven't done it already: Lore helm with Ort + Sol, +1 to all skills and 30% lightening resistance.
Any 3 socket helm and just put in the resistances you need since Ral, Ort, and Thul give 30% resists in a helm. So if your low on lightening resist just put two or three Orts into it for 60%-90% resist for it.
Ancients pledge is the obvious one with Ral + Ort + Tal with 43+% resist all.
Smoke with Nef + Lum in armor will give you 50% resist all and you can get that from Hell Countess, if you're able to run her.hee.
A Rhyme shield with Shael + Eth for 25% resist all and cannot be frozen.
If you don't have a good weapon with plus skills you can make a spirit sword, and obviously when you enter Hell you'll probably want to make a spirit shield with the shield being the hard part to obtain.
Also you're an Assassin, use Cloak of Shadows as much as you wish. It doesn't work on uniques or champions, but at least it stops all other enemies in their tracks. Ranged enemies will stop shooting if you catch them in your cloak of shadows which should help a ton with survivability.

There’s very few viable mercs for LoD. You can make an A2 Insight, A2 Crushing Blow stacked merc (reapers roll, etc.), or an A2 Infinity. Any other recommendations are for meme builds
What about armour? Mine dies pretty fast in NM, especially when running chaos sanctuary and I need him to do damage Vs lightning immune monsters.
He'd need items that deal with damage reduction, life leech, and high resistances.
Ideally something with cannot be frozen, and as much resistance as possible
You can’t rely on the merc to clear out entire packs of enemies. The mercs are moronic, their main use is to clear out singular bosses or champion demons. They are there as a compliment to you, don’t depend on them entirely.
If you have monsters you can’t deal with either run away or buy a wand that has lower resist charges.
Vampire Gaze/Tal's Mask are both easy to get options for a helm, and Duriels Shell/Shaftstop/Treachery are all good easier to obtain armors.

Just finished a bowzon playthrough. Somehow in my 20 years with this game I never played bowzon, even though I've played every other non meme build at least once. I ended up going with ice arrow/exploding arrow, so it was just massively shittier sorc. This is my single player plugy account so I had lots of powerful items for her. But even with shako, enigma, lycander's aim, soj, ravenfrost, maras, 2/20 gloves, aldur's boots, razortail, two skillers, anni and torch, infinity on merc, the damage was just bad. It was nice being able to deal with immune easily, and it was safe, but low damage. I tried physical in early hell but that was a hundred times worse. I had upped buriza and it was so ass. Couldn't kill anything. Do you need windforce or faith with a pride merc and gg charms + 40/15d for phys bowzon to work? I even had laying of hands, fortitude, gface and goreriders.
Anyway I really want to find another jah so I can do a tesladin
Yeah, there is a reason why 99% of bowzons are physical. The elemental abilities just outright underpreform. But, at least you can check that build off of your list.

Like everyone else I used to hate the jungle part of act 3, but now it's my favorite part. Kurast is cool of course, but the sewers and especially durance of hate are the two worst areas of the game. Well, maggot lair too.

I uh have been playing D2R lately, blasphemy I know. However, I made a Throw-Barb and it's absolutely one of my new favourite builds now.
D2r is a shining example of what a remaster should be (though not perfect, obviously). I don't care what the nerds say.
With that out of the way, how far are you? Do you have gear already or just doing a completely fresh run? I did throw barb on d2r for my first time too. It's not the best, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I made a Throw Barb as well. The updates made it very viable. The ability to pierce through his mastery and regenerate stock upon critical strike made it so good. It's the barbarian that actually has the ability to clear crowds the best.
Also Hydra is actually good since it doesn't have a cool down, and the changes to how charges work for the Assassin is great. The changes to the Amazon's passive dodging skills was good since you aren't locked into an animation anymore.
