I guess the outrage is because it's got a box price too, but that's one purchase to get into the game. It's not recurring revenue that would make sense to cover not only a base game but seasons upon seasons afterwards. Would be better-received perhaps if F2P like POE, but that game I'd argue is more like a free trial until you 'buy the game' with some stash tabs. Also POE is currently imploding so probably not good to use as a positive example atm.

I'm not denying that. I totally understand that a game can be released with an upfront price tag, no other payments other than maybe 1 or 2 expansions, and do well with that. However, if that's how it is, then that's about all you're getting, and for a loot grind game like an ARPG released after POE came onto the scene, that's just not gonna cut it. D3 is often complained about due to not really getting substantial content anymore, and that's due in part to its business model.
Blizzard should distance themselves as far away from the PoE crowd as possible. They're not healthy for gaming as a whole, when the game appeals to these kinds of gambling addicted zombies it's all over for the franchise.

They drastically reduced the amount of loot and currency you get without mentioning it in the patch notes, doubled down on some mechanics people overall didn't like to begin with, removed ultrawide support out of nowhere, and probably some other shit I forget. When the project lead made his response/apology statement, he said that all the good currency and loot is a rare find from these ubered-up rare mobs rather than being more spread out across the game as it was before. Much more gamba-feeling apparently. Also he was saying things are fine cause he's seen people get insane drops all the time, but then others pointed out that there's cheats that let you see what's in a map (rift) before you run it so the hackers are the ones getting the good drops by spam-opening them until it has the good mob and then they bring their bois in with magic find gear. Big shitshow.

Not that guy, but it's not a full-on MMO, so no. It's only a semi-MMO in the sense that you'll be phased in and out with like another 50 players in the zones you are in, for example.
so far I have only leveled up half way, the skill tree was just a concept thing, what they currently have in game is more like a series of clusters. You put 5 points in one cluster (each cluster has like 5 skills + 5 passives) and you unlock the next cluster of skills.
builds are about what you expect, there are skills/passives that allow you to specialize in things like werewolf form for druid, or fire magic for sorc. Some skills have synergies and every skill has you choice between 2 passives.
overall though I feel like the build complexity will come more from what items you use rather than how you distribute skills
I think there are enough skill points to get every skill, you can only equip 5 at a time though and they wouldnt be leveled up (you can put up to 5 points in a skill +2 more for passives associated with each skill).
Looking at the Dev blogs for the game they definitely have their head in the right place to make something pretty good but I'll obviously wait until release. It seems they're moving away from the D3 thing of having builds being completely based on sets and legendaries and more on actually committing to skills in a skill tree which I'm all for. Honestly anything other than the trashfire that is PoE at this point will be alright with me.
Then limiting the maximum paragon level shows that they've got the right idea and they seem to want a nice end point for each season as opposed to the endless grind that other ARPGS try to do.

Since they're going for pvp and are modern devs and love forcing e-sports I bet this game will go full no fun allowed because pvp "balance". Viable builds will be heavily regulated by blizz and they'll nerf more than they buff. I recently played my seven sided strike monk in d3 and there's no way d4 will have that HAM power level throwing out auto aim full screen aoe one shots while you're untargetable and invunerable every 2-3 seconds.
Well see when there's post after post from crying people who gets blown up by some overpowered build in pvp zones. Will Blizzard bend and nerf the damage and cooldown which also affects those who only play it in pve? Or will skills have different damage and cd in pvp zones? My bet is the no fun allowed route where all their pvp balance decisions affect pve players like me.
I honestly don't think they'll give a shit, it must be nearly impossible to balance a system with this many variables. They can tune the overall damage output for generalized builds over time but the amount of RNG happening through procs, crits and other effects must be impossible to tune.

I played monk, it got pretty weak towards the endgame, had to buy shit from the AH to progress half way through.
all WD pets became useless about halfway into nightmare difficulty because they didnt scale worth a shit so they just died instantly after a certain point so you were left with either bear spam or dart spam

people thought diablo 3 was going to fail but it beat path of exile easily. just need couch co op on the console i think

They drastically reduced the amount of loot and currency you get without mentioning it in the patch notes, doubled down on some mechanics people overall didn't like to begin with, removed ultrawide support out of nowhere, and probably some other shit I forget. When the project lead made his response/apology statement, he said that all the good currency and loot is a rare find from these ubered-up rare mobs rather than being more spread out across the game as it was before. Much more gamba-feeling apparently. Also he was saying things are fine cause he's seen people get insane drops all the time, but then others pointed out that there's cheats that let you see what's in a map (rift) before you run it so the hackers are the ones getting the good drops by spam-opening them until it has the good mob and then they bring their bois in with magic find gear. Big shitshow.
I've completely lost faith in their ability to balance that piece of shit game these days.

I don't really, I'm not usually drawn to these types of games. Something about D4 caught my interest though, the "no trading" thing really sealed the deal as it proves they want to distance themselves from the p2w trend that has plagued online gaming for years.

so far I got all classes past act 1, all of them feel good except the rogue, kind of underwhelming.
I like how things are more grounded compared to diablo 3, the atmosphere is dark and moody and the combat feels a bit slowed down and weighty

Not that guy, but it's not a full-on MMO, so no. It's only a semi-MMO in the sense that you'll be phased in and out with like another 50 players in the zones you are in, for example.
These kinds of MMOs are better than the regular ones as you won't get swarmed by raids in pvp areas.

How is building and build complexity so far? All I know is that they have a skill tree that's shaped like a literal tree.
so far I have only leveled up half way, the skill tree was just a concept thing, what they currently have in game is more like a series of clusters. You put 5 points in one cluster (each cluster has like 5 skills + 5 passives) and you unlock the next cluster of skills.
builds are about what you expect, there are skills/passives that allow you to specialize in things like werewolf form for druid, or fire magic for sorc. Some skills have synergies and every skill has you choice between 2 passives.
overall though I feel like the build complexity will come more from what items you use rather than how you distribute skills
You can't have access to all skills like Diablo 3 though right?
I think there are enough skill points to get every skill, you can only equip 5 at a time though and they wouldnt be leveled up (you can put up to 5 points in a skill +2 more for passives associated with each skill).
If it is good, it shall be treated as any other good game. If it is shit, it shall be treated like all Blizzard games past last decade
Looking at the Dev blogs for the game they definitely have their head in the right place to make something pretty good but I'll obviously wait until release. It seems they're moving away from the D3 thing of having builds being completely based on sets and legendaries and more on actually committing to skills in a skill tree which I'm all for. Honestly anything other than the trashfire that is PoE at this point will be alright with me.

Since they're going for pvp and are modern devs and love forcing e-sports I bet this game will go full no fun allowed because pvp "balance". Viable builds will be heavily regulated by blizz and they'll nerf more than they buff. I recently played my seven sided strike monk in d3 and there's no way d4 will have that HAM power level throwing out auto aim full screen aoe one shots while you're untargetable and invunerable every 2-3 seconds.
I'd hope so, but they've stated multiple times that they don't want to hinder people from creating overpowered builds.
Well see when there's post after post from crying people who gets blown up by some overpowered build in pvp zones. Will Blizzard bend and nerf the damage and cooldown which also affects those who only play it in pve? Or will skills have different damage and cd in pvp zones? My bet is the no fun allowed route where all their pvp balance decisions affect pve players like me.
I honestly don't think they'll give a shit, it must be nearly impossible to balance a system with this many variables. They can tune the overall damage output for generalized builds over time but the amount of RNG happening through procs, crits and other effects must be impossible to tune.
The atmosphere and art for this game looks absolute top notch. It looks so grim. But you know modern devs can't help themselves with putting in zoomer shit like meme dances and cute cat masks, purple top hats etc. It doesn't matter if it ruins the integritet of the game. Get ready to stand in the main town that's a shitty run down grimdark hell hole and have players running past you with rainbow unicorn headpieces they bought in the store for 10$ and some other dude beside you standing naked with a pimp hat doing the flossing dance.
They specifically said in the latest blog post that the cash shop cosmetics will only be "holistic" so that they fit into the game and universe. If they ever do rainbow unicorn stuff then it will probably be +5 years down the road after the game has had 2-3 expansions.
