PoE is not bad in a relative to its competitors, it's probably the best in its genre. The problem is that ARPGs are not good games in general. I've played a pretty broad selection of them and I have yet to find one that demands mechanical skill/technique or strategic thinking to move your character around and kill enemies. In other words the gameplay never stands on its own merits, farming items is the gameplay. You can look at any of the most acclaimed titles in the genre, like Diablo 2 for example, and ask yourself whether you would be having fun playing "in a vacuum" with the exploitative progression amd farming elements removed.
The gameplay style isn't bad. Not every RPG has to have super advanced slow paced tactical combat. What makes it shit is that developers have no creativity and think every game has to be a loot grind and nothing else. Games like Divine Divinity is a rare example of how this type of gameplay can make for a fun proper RPG experience.
Diablo 1 was too simple to play it long term, especially when other Diablo like games were released.
Diablo 3 was too cartoonish and gameplay tempo too slow.
I didn't play PoE, but that skill tree genuinely scares me, looks too complicated.
D4 looks like D3 reskin.
Meanwhile, D2 tempo is perfect, people fight for loot, skill trees are fairly simple, does not look like WoW alike.

the combat will be better than poe, the group play will be better than poe, the post launch support will likely be a lot less than you'd want for a "live service" title and not as consistent as poe.
Blizzard greed makes it hard to want to buy into this title with things like day 1 battle pass selling cosmetics that should be included in the base game, and 70$ box price.

Played the closed beta. The game isn't terrible but it's not a huge departure from Diablo 3 either. I can see a lot of people seething about the always online shit and the loot system. The closest thing to PoE we get in D4 is the new paragon system which was one of the things I liked most. I will say I'm concerned about some of the things they said in a recent interview. They keep saying respec costs are going to be high and they were pretty insane in the beta. It is very strange considering how many items, specially Unique items, there are in the game that really changes your entire playstyle. The game encourages you to try different playstyles with the loot but then punishes you for doing so with respec costs. Mind you I only hit level 76 but at that level, it cost me around 2mil to respec on my rogue. It wasn't really a problem because everyone in beta was exploiting a money bug with Aspects but if that stays like that at launch people are going to rightfully complain. The game has potential but Blizzard's current track record has been pretty terrible lately. We will have to wait and see.
The only real money stuff I saw was cosmetics. Hopefully, it stays that way but there were some features that were not in the game during beta. Like crafting, there is potential for some kind of scummy gem system to squeeze money out of players. I really don't think they will do that since they have Immortal. Even Blizzard isn't that stupid.
I'm not saying nuBlizzard isn't capable of going turboisraelite but I really don't think they are going to make it pay to win like everyone fears. They already fricked up D3 at launch day and they had issues with the FTC over the real money AH working as a proto-NFT. I don't even know why they continue to aggressively pursue the Chinese market. They have consistently fricked them over on deals time and time again.
Well, FTC looks to be dead set on killing the Microsoft-Blizzard merger so they might just be looking to cashout however else they can.

Punitive respec system is exactly what made me drop Last Epoch. I don't want to be forced into following guides in order to not brick my character. Path of Exile has the convenient orbs of regret which are easily available in the late game.
The annoying thing is that in D4 you can get these really cool unique items that have certain passive effects that completely change your gameplay. For example, if you are playing a ranged Rogue and you get the unique helm that causes AoE poison damage in melee range you would want to swap to daggers and restructure your character to make full use of imbues (poisons). There's a bunch of items that make certain abilities that are mostly garbage into really strong ones. Another item I remember was a staff(?) that would make a sorcerer's fireballs split into three and bounce on the ground causing massive AoE dmg.
The punitive system feels so fricking stupid when you have these cool items that are begging for experimentation. They should have gold sinks for other things like re-enchanting an item or cosmetics.

Honestly I liked that D3 didn't have a talent tree and you could just switch out moves at will. It made for a lot better experience where you can just make 1 guy and keep the gear you need. I guess a good alternative would be to let the player duel spec for a cost but that's another issue when it comes to all online games and that's the economy. Specially with Diablo money always ends up becoming way to inflated. Unless they find a way to money sink they are going to get fricked. Funny enough Albion Online kind of solved this issue since you can use ingame money to buy premium currency and premium subs so it majorly stablizes the economy since it requires so much grind.
Well in D4 the costs to upgrade a regular item to a legendary one are pretty astronomical depending on the level of the items. There are quite a few gold sinks. I think respec shouldn't be one of them.

It's always funny that whenever Blizzard decides to "go back to their roots" they always dish out the worst aspects of their old games to put in the new one. There are some cool things in D2 but the punitive respec costs were not one of them...

I was in the beta for D4. I easily got +30 hours of playtime in a couple of weeks. The gameplay loop is satisfying, the abilities "feel" powerful and the game has less ways to feed you class specific items. That would be enough for me to buy it at full price, but now that I've seen the monetization, I feel conflicted.
Nice, I got my Sorc to level 30. I got my ass kicked by ice Sorc all the time in the pvp zone. I'm sure they are gonna get nerfed by launch. I'm still not sure what class I'll be playing but I really liked Rogue and Barb the most.

Another thing as well is that it looks directionless. D3 felt like it was their attempt at doing a PoE/Guild Wars free MMO but put all their money on the auction house only for it to fail. D4 they keep selling it as a return to D2 where it's just a game with optional multiplayer but then keep coming out with all this shit about multiplayer and making it seem like an MMO. Even worse is that you still have Diablo Immortal which now begs the question of what the point of that game is since now there will be a proper Diablo game that will probably be way less israeli. PoE is not bad in a relative to its competitors, it's probably the best in its genre. The problem is that ARPGs are not good games in general. I've played a pretty broad selection of them and I have yet to find one that demands mechanical skill/technique or strategic thinking to move your character around and kill enemies. In other words the gameplay never stands on its own merits, farming items is the gameplay. You can look at any of the most acclaimed titles in the genre, like Diablo 2 for example, and ask yourself whether you would be having fun playing "in a vacuum" with the exploitative progression amd farming elements removed.
The gameplay style isn't bad. Not every RPG has to have super advanced slow paced tactical combat. What makes it shit is that developers have no creativity and think every game has to be a loot grind and nothing else. Games like Divine Divinity is a rare example of how this type of gameplay can make for a fun proper RPG experience.
Frick I wish there were more games like it.

Have you not witnessed Blizzard's critical blunders this past decade? At this point, Blizzard has been shit longer than they've been great. They're capable of delivering a good game, but it's going to take more than that to dethrone POE as per the OP question. Played the closed beta. The game isn't terrible but it's not a huge departure from Diablo 3 either. I can see a lot of people seething about the always online shit and the loot system. The closest thing to PoE we get in D4 is the new paragon system which was one of the things I liked most. I will say I'm concerned about some of the things they said in a recent interview. They keep saying respec costs are going to be high and they were pretty insane in the beta. It is very strange considering how many items, specially Unique items, there are in the game that really changes your entire playstyle. The game encourages you to try different playstyles with the loot but then punishes you for doing so with respec costs. Mind you I only hit level 76 but at that level, it cost me around 2mil to respec on my rogue. It wasn't really a problem because everyone in beta was exploiting a money bug with Aspects but if that stays like that at launch people are going to rightfully complain. The game has potential but Blizzard's current track record has been pretty terrible lately. We will have to wait and see.

The only real money stuff I saw was cosmetics. Hopefully, it stays that way but there were some features that were not in the game during beta. Punitive respec system is exactly what made me drop Last Epoch. I don't want to be forced into following guides in order to not brick my character. Path of Exile has the convenient orbs of regret which are easily available in the late game.

You are not, you can respec with gold and that is easy to get
The annoying thing is that in D4 you can get these really cool unique items that have certain passive effects that completely change your gameplay. For example, if you are playing a ranged Rogue and you get the unique helm that causes AoE poison damage in melee range you would want to swap to daggers and restructure your character to make full use of imbues (poisons). There's a bunch of items that make certain abilities that are mostly garbage into really strong ones. Another item I remember was a staff(?) that would make a sorcerer's fireballs split into three and bounce on the ground causing massive AoE dmg.
The punitive system feels so fricking stupid when you have these cool items that are begging for experimentation. They should have gold sinks for other things like re-enchanting an item or cosmetics.

You would realize that I was criticizing their hair-brained idea of having punitive costs on respecing when the entire game revolves around constantly respecing every time you get a cool item. It goes entirely against the core of the design of the game and just seems like a poorly thought out idea. They even said in the interview how they think it's a good idea to have multiple barbarians which is fricking moronic because leveling up in D4 is much more of a timesink than it was in D3.

Honestly I liked that D3 didn't have a talent tree and you could just switch out moves at will. It made for a lot better experience where you can just make 1 guy and keep the gear you need. I guess a good alternative would be to let the player duel spec for a cost but that's another issue when it comes to all online games and that's the economy. Specially with Diablo money always ends up becoming way to inflated. Unless they find a way to money sink they are going to get fricked. Funny enough Albion Online kind of solved this issue since you can use ingame money to buy premium currency and premium subs so it majorly stablizes the economy since it requires so much grind.
Well in D4 the costs to upgrade a regular item to a legendary one are pretty astronomical depending on the level of the items. There are quite a few gold sinks. I think respec shouldn't be one of them.

I was in the beta for D4. I easily got +30 hours of playtime in a couple of weeks. The gameplay loop is satisfying, the abilities "feel" powerful and the game has less ways to feed you class specific items. That would be enough for me to buy it at full price, but now that I've seen the monetization, I feel conflicted.

D4 they keep selling it as a return to D2 where it's just a game with optional multiplayer but then keep coming out with all this shit about multiplayer and making it seem like an MMO. Even worse is that you still have Diablo Immortal which now begs the question of what the point of that game is since now there will be a proper Diablo game that will probably be way less israeli.
