If you care a lot about specific mechanics, precise balanced content and end game modes I can see why it's underwhelming.
But if you like a Diablo with:

>a worthy soundtrack that can be listened to by itself
>massive, lengthy campaign
>beautiful maps (even though they are not procedural)
>melee combat and violence

>you are mainly a solo player that wants to progress at your own time
I think you should give it a try only after you see how the Expansion is.
Some bads for me:
>the expansion is a jungle/Aztec nonsense, from European middle ages setting with some amazing knight design (the Cathedral's knights) to tribal voodoo shit
>the loot so far (ACT II) is not great. Once you get golds, blues are useless, once you get browns everything else goes to salvage without the need to look what it is.
I hear after level 50 the loot gets better
>the scaling of the enemies doesn't feel as great. I keep finding very strong hedgehogs, skellies and zombies and never been able to one shot them
>the shop is terrible, it has cosmetics but they have their best designs there. Ultra expensive too
>weird to say but sometimes I feel that there are too many QoL changes. Sometimes I miss the identification, the portal scroll book, the repairing depending by use not death

there is 0 darkness in diablo 4, the aesthetic and game design cannot convey it

I played the demo on release and got D1 a couple of months later.

The seasonal content is way too short. I finished this season's quest line at level 25, which is ridiculous. It either needs to last longer or there needs to be additional unique seasonal content besides grinding the battlepass and the sets of challenges. The gimmicks they have come up with for each season have all been fun and they affected builds/gameplay in meaningful ways but there just isn't enough meat on the bone.
How did they make a more boring skill system than 2 and 3?
I liked the power-fantasy of D3 more. If I wanted misery-porn I would stick to PoE
