The main issue is that battle passes are time-limited. It's like buying a DLC and having a limited amount of time to get everything you can from it, because the devs will remove it from the game even if you paid cash to access the "premium" rewards.
It's a non-issue if you are already blindly addicted to the game, but it still is a stupid monetization model.
D4 is trying to be an MMO so it wants to be your forever game. In that case 80 hours isn't much but if you play it casually you will probably have a hard time completing it.

If it's really short you're going to be playing a lot in a short amount of time to complete it, but if it's really long then you'll have plenty of time in the long run. Overwatch's seasons have been 3 months so if it's anything like that you can easily do 80 hours of playtime in 3 months, but you won't have much time for anything else.

And this doesn't even account for the very high possibility that battle pass point gain will be severely reduced after completing your daily/weekly challenges, that will themselves be very likely be designed to take about an hour.
These things are very carefully designed not to make the game more fun, but to push you towards spending money on the game (or more money, in this case).

The key difference for me is one is on a time limit and the other is not. If I can put in the 200 hours at my own pace and take breaks however long I want and pick right back up where I left off, that's fine. If I have to pump in 80 hours in a limited time frame because the developers said so then frick off. Holiday events are usually fine when they return every year but I can't stand having a timer on your playerbase at all times. I just ignore battle passes and play the games however and whenever I want.

As someone who has never played Diablo, aren't there clones out there that stand on their own or surpass this series or is this a pokemon/resident evil situation where everything on the market is either dogshit/died out by the active competitor.
there are plenty of exceptional successors — ones that work offline, no less — but actiblizz spends a monstrous amount on marketing.

does it expire at the end of the season? Does it have stacking challenges you can complete for big bumps in exp like destiny 2? Do the rewards filter into an in-game shop you can sink in-game gold into to re-aquire them later? There's so many ways to do a battlepass these days and depending on how they handle them is how I decide if a game is worth my time at all.
if ow2 is any indication the challenges do not stack and there will be no premium currency in it so you can never accumulate any by playing.
Ow2 has one of the worst passes i've seen, they even lie by putting free currency in it while coloring the logo gold to trick people but the most you can buy with a whole premium pass worth of "free" currency is an old ow1 skin

I'm at the point where I'm just not playing anything with a BP. If my favorite series of all time got a new game tomorrow, but it had a BP, I'm not playing it.
It's okay when it's free like in Deep Rock Galactic or Splatoon 3, but even then you get tired of feeling obligated to play after a few months, but still even then all the stuff in the battle pass can be acquired by other means in the game.

battle passes operate on fomo my dude, its gonna lock you out, and they will be selling tier skips, and "premium" battle pass bundles with 20 tier skips for 10-20 dollars more

Live service isn't inherently a bad thing though. Fortnite is a live service and it's insanely popular and profitable. Destiny as well. The problem is games that release unfinished and then try to push live service models. Which is why that as long as the game releases finished then I have no issue with live service and from everything I've seen from the beta, the players are in good hands.

If anything, Blizzard is actually going above and beyond this time. There will be the free battle pass for everyone, that has all the important stuff and that you can't pay to skip. And then there's the paid battle pass which is ONLY cosmetics.
I don't know if Blizzard got burned recently or something, but their long-term monetization for D4 seems fairly reasonable, assuming that they of course can provide those big updates with every new season.

I've only played Diablo Immortal, and I did enjoy it, but what made me stop playing was how "jobby" it is. Be there at 6pm for vaults, be there at 8pm on Saturday for the battle, etc.

I played the beta and it felt like grim dark Diablo 3 plopped into an extremely generic and repetitive open world. Both Diablo 2 and Diablo 4 share the name Diablo so I guess they're related in that way. You do click monsters in both of them and you do level up. Only one of them ships with Diablo the character in it unfortunately. Hopefully there will be a battlepass for him in the future.
