Never played a Diablo game in my life, which one should I play? I currently only plan to stick with single player stuff, do the campaign once or twice, but maybe my opinion will change later who knows.

I only played D2 in the old days and have no clue about any of the newer stuff.
Some balance changes, auto gold pickup, some new runewords and items. Not a ton, but 2 doesn't need much.

QoL stuff for the most part, auto gold pickup, mostly stuff that would have been modded into og D2. They've got these things called terror zones which boosts the levels of mobs to help with XP i assume

Mosaic assassins are the new patch 1.10 20k+ damage Hammerdin. She can kill anything in an 8 players Hell game instantly as if it was a singleplayer normal game.

I hear a friend of mine who is in his mid 30s say this a lot, I've never understood this yet I've played modern ARPGs like PoE and D3 and found them underwhelming. I can understand maybe from and endgame perspective, but endgame was an unheardof concept when d2 came out and it did a pretty good job of having one when it was never designed to
Fricking this. The endgame in the genre as a whole is busted as frick. Diablo 2 was perfectly good for a time when these kind of games weren't expected to have an endless end game ontop of a regular playthrough.
Atmosphere/build variety/music/art direction have all aged pretty damn well to be honest, (by the relative standards of the genre)

The frick? It's the best game if you want a good single player experience and sense of adventure.
Keep in mind that beating the game in Normal only counts for Diablo 1. If you beat Diablo 2 and 3 in Normal - you didn't beat the game. It doesn't count. You NEED to beat the final boss on the hardest difficulty (hardest base difficulty in D3, not Torment) for it to count. And in Diablo 2 it can be really hard and take a lot of your time.

I personally played https://www.projectdiablo2.com/ this modded version of original d2 for a few months a while back online was great, loads of new features, QoL changes and balance / skill tree fixed / remakes.
It's not the only project like it around so just search around till you see one that you like.

D2 is a base for a whole genre. D1 is probably the most unique one here.
D2R is one of the most faithful and best quality remasters ever made, they really set the bar.
D2R unless you are willing to play kino LoD mods from the mid-late '00s, otherwise D2R is superior to LoD even considering plugy. if you ARE looking to play old mods though, LoD will procvide you literally thousands more hours of content than D2R will.
