I keep hearing people saying Diablo 3 is way better than Resurrected. Is this a meme or is it true?

diablo 2 and diablo 3 are both good games, but completelly DIFFERENT games.
Sorry to put you on the spot but what's so different between both of those games? I was thinking of reinstalling and play some Diablo 3 it's been a while.
Diablo 2 is very demanding when it comes to items and builds and progress. I wouldn't say 'hard', but its demanding. You need to know what youre building, why you're building it, and what gear to get.
It good and fun because once you get a build rolling, mowing down monsters you struggled to kill at first can be fun, and there's a certain charm to it's itemization and drop system that no ARPG has accomplished since. Its character/item systems also offer an interesting depth that D3 does not. However, the endgame is quite shallow.
Meanwhile, D3 is SUPER casual and forgiving. You can throw literally anything on and pick any skills and make progress. However, once you reach nephalem rifts/Torments, you NEED to have a Set or some specific Legacy of Dreams gem build equipped, or you will hit a wall. This is still supper forgiving and casual, since the sets basically tell you what skills to use and how to play.
Almost all the sets are viable to a certain extent, but some are definitely better than others. D3 has a more extensive end-game than 2, and its pretty fun while it lasts. However, it really lasts a month maximum. D3 has a variety of fun skills and satisfying animations that make it a nice fun casual action RPG, but it lacks the depth that D2 offers.

Damn, now I am considering picking up Diablo 3 and refunding Resurrected.
So far, I like D2R but I'm very early in the game and all the people talking about stat allocation and gear is daunting. I'm worried about reaching a point where the build I have is like running into a wall and I can't progress because "lol you should've read this manual on your class homosexual, now re-roll".

If you don't follow guides you will be forced to reroll. It's virtually inevitable in D2. D3 is ass in general.

2 has content designed specifically for optimized buids. You can finish the game on normal with virtually any character build, but if you want to play on higher difficulties (they work like a newgame+), you need to know the skills and understand the game's mechanics. Some characters depend on gear more than others, but generally you will need an optimized build to see trully endgame stuff (ubers).
Bullshit. You finish normal at level 35-40, but can still level to 99 by the time you finish Hell. You don't need to be optimized to finish Hell, just stubborn.

I had a lot of fun playing OG Diablo 2, but found it extremely difficult to go back after playing 3. There are a lot of gameplay workflow optimizations that make it play extremely well on console, and I use the local coop on Diablo 3. Granted I do like the freeform weird ass characters you can come up with in 2, I like the seasons in 3 much more. The way the world is laid out feels fresher in 3, 2 gets old quickly. I have no desire to go back to grinding in 2, in 3 its only really necessary for GR 70+ chars. The crafting in 3 provides a lot of freedom, 2 is mainly runewords and a couple cube recipes (I haven't looked into this as much for current 2 Resurrected though so I could be wrong).
Diablo 3 has had the benefit of almost a decade worth of patches, tweaks and fixes and they're still releasing new content. 2 is like, trying to cash in on nostalgia but making you see it through EA lenses, if that makes sense. That's probably the biggest reason, I feel like I'm starting over with 2 but I already know everything and have to wait for patches, content, etc.

You're probably in the target demographic then, I don't think it really flies for people who played the shit out of OG 2. I hope you like it, I had some rad concept characters. Melee sorc, Lagromancer, Hammerdin, singer Barb, concept builds is where I had the most fun honestly.

I don't talk to any of the morons I used to game with anymore. My wife likes local coop Diablo 3 so that's been our jam for a while. If I still played with them I might if they did, but we all kind of stopped gaming together for various reasons, then stopped talking altogether because that's all we had. I still play Diablo 1 though, I love the setting and music.

D3 is awesome if you want to shut off your brain and have glorious "I hit the button and the screen explodes into piles of loot," time. Nothing wrong with it. Musou games can do that, too.
D2 has a slower burn and bigger dopamine hits when you finally see a Unique or Set item drop or level up and upgrade a skill. Also, bigger multiplayer groups with people, mercs, and minions makes it feel like a larger experience.
Diablo is a very literal dungeon crawl -- you creep into the depths and can quite honestly be overwhelmed by two or three enemies -- but is also a gem.
