Diablo II like all ARPGs it's just outdated as a game genre and it's showing it's years. Still miles better than other nu-blizzard remakes that outright murdered still viable games (looking at you, Reforged)
i think blizzard has semi-fixed reforged now, though. i read some patch note recently and it said all the right things.

D2R is okay, quick casting is a god send and by itself makes going back to vanilla nearly impossible. The new content they've added is also great, between sunder charms, new runewords, buffing outdated sets, it's all good stuff. And of course making a lot of previously trash builds into actually playable choices (dual throw barb is fun even if it's still not great)
But the engine is so unoptimized, it runs hotter on my graphics card than anything else and I have no clue why. Also there's no defending the lack of more stash tabs. Why is it so hard to just give the player a dozen stash tabs, plus a currency tab? They even gave us a few more which was nice but I can't help but feel they're eventually going to monetize that shit.

You can't play Shitfest on D2R? Shitfest is 100% softcoded, so there is no reason it won't work on D2R when D2R has all of the original's softcoding and more. Do D2 binaries not work with D2R? Either way, it wouldn't be hard to make Shitfest yourself, just set monster density to the max so that you get 1 monster for every few game tiles. I could make a mod like that in two seconds.

I wasn't aware of any backlash, as far as remasters go diablo 2 was received extremely well, same with starcraft and brood war (minus a few autists that whine about individual unit portraits, but you have to expect a few of those). Only blizzard remaster that gets genuine hate was warcraft and that as I understand it genuinely deserved the hate.

The removed clans, ladders, ranked, and a ton of other features from the online component for no actual reason. They completely lied about the scope of the project, saying the cinematics in game would be completely redone, with more added where they originally wanted to but ran out of budget, then they outsourced the entire thing to some random asset flipper studio in South Korea who made "HD" assets and called it a day.

D2R is fricking amazing and I can't believe the shitfire that is Blizzard was able to put it out in the company's current state. Who ever they outsourced it too deserve to just take hold of the franchise imo.

I played D2R for about 60 hours, solo self found. Leveled a frozen orb/meteor sorc, found basically all the best in slot items in that time frame. Shako, occu, arach, SoJ, war travs, built a CTA and spirit shield.
D2R is a faithful remaster of the original D2, but it's still lacking in so many QoL features that PoE ha. Item filter, stash tabs, etc. It's fun to play for a few dozen hours until the game boils down to opening 9001 super chests in Lower Kurast for high runes or farming the same 3 bosses for eternity. If you play in trade then it's even easier to obtain those end game items.

D2R is god tier and a better diablo than original diablo 2 in all aspects it seems (controls improvement they made some months ago was goat).
They need to add an auction house tho, frick trading in d2 and poe, its a waste of time. Otherwise I'm done with both games
It would be great if LAN mode was supported for all those amazing mods to play with controller support. But as is, Diablo 2 gameplay is too dated for me to enjoy anymore. I played the game for thousands of hours when I was a teenager, there's just not there for me anymore except for pleasant memories.
Can't they just patch in local play,I know the console versions were a major hassle to get groups with friends but PC should have had SOME form of local play?

currently playing Diablo II R, Assassin, trap lightning, like it a lot, level 15 or so. I don't know what to do with gems and runes though. People told me to farm Countess but I don't know, it doesn't seem like I need to do this
