bare minimum put a point into amplify damage and possibly lower resis. amp damage helps your minions/merc, lower resis will help poisons if you go that route and will definitely help anyone you play with.
imo poisons don't synergize well and if you want them to pay off you need to build around them and invest heavily in supporting them. also, the build you're going for won't be finished until nearly max level, so unless you plan to play to 99, you're going to be lacking something you want.
if you ignore poisons entirely and go for a fishymancer-type build, you can get more points in CE to raise the radius, you can get more points in amp damage to raise the radius and duration, you can get more points in lower resis to increase the effect, and (if you're playing hardcore or just don't like dying in hell) you can max out dim vision to basically make almost every regular enemy harmless, including the really nasty ones like gloams, stygian dolls, etc., from up to two full screen lengths over. it's insane how underrated and overpowered dim vision is, especially on hardcore, it's one of the best survivability tools in the game at higher skill point allocations. everything just stops attacking unless you intentionally walk into melee range of it.

if he's talking about private servers, they usually have instructions on their site with links to the updates you will need. it's trivially easy to update from an old version to a specific newer version, all of the updaters for specific versions are publicly available.
