Path of Exile and Diablo 3 established a pattern of massive numbers of players when a new League/Season starts that slowly dwindles down until the next. Diablo 4, unfortunately, fricked up their very first season really hard after people were used to PoE/Later D3 seasons and with all the nerfs way less people than expected returned.
I mean seasonal content is more for the dedicated players, I don't think they were expecting 10+ million players again
S1 should have released with the base game
Probably not, but Path of Exile regularly breaks records for concurrent players with each new season. While it is not entirely fair to compare the business models (PoE is free, D4 costs money), it does show that there is significant interest in new players (generally) coming to new seasons. I believe that D4 definitely was gonna have less due to the upfront cost, but I just think season 1 was a dud. They nerfed everything, buffed nothing, and have a lame as frick non-mechanic.

At this point, while selling more copies is nice, they are clearly on the "Milk the player base for more via cosmetics" phase of the game, and they couldn't even be bothered to bring back enough players for that to happen. My guess is that Season 2 will probably have a bunch of buffs and hopefully some new shit to attract people. But for me I am probably not going back until an expansion, I'll just go play Path of Exile.
Everything they've said is a step in the right direction. Too bad it wasn't done before the game release, it clearly needed another 6-12 months in the oven.
game is going to be complete after the first expansion, the next 4 seasons are pretty much a beta
i feel like if they told people this game was going to be in early access for a year no one would cry and b***h constantly but selling it for 100$ was kinda scummy since it's clear that the 70-100 progress is missing
