mostly due to that Wei Yan was a very aggressive officer in terms of politics and military, which was the opposite of how Zhuge Liang wanted to handle things, I will state that Wei Yan is the flat out better general but that isn't the point.
As for Ma Su there are many ways to look at him, I think the nicest way to look at him is "Zhuge Really wanted to try to foster some new talent to replace the old talent since Shu was seeing a lot of their most talented people die off or become elderly, so he went with the guy who preformed well in diplomacy and seemed to have studied warfare, keyword being "seemed to" , It's clear Ma Su's biggest issue was his lack of actual experience combined with facing a legend like Zhang He himself, who is still one of the best generals of his time.

Not according to historians. Chen Shou specifically appraised him of doing the exact opposite.

He highly valued Wei Yan's talents, but was too indulgent of Wei Yan, feeding Wei Yan's arrogance, so that when Zhuge Liang died Wei Yan had the misconception that he was going to inherit command of the army, leading to a fracturing of the senior military command that could have destroyed the army.

The open world element should have just been an improved version of DW8's Ambition Mode. It was a fun novelty raising those couple of buildings around a tiny hub, so having that be expanded into something more in-depth would have been nice. I can't even be mad at DW9 all that much because the open world idea has great potential. I'd even say it's is the natural evolution of the series. But it simply cannot come to fruition because the dev team does not possess the capacity, skill nor time to do things properly.
10 will be announced at the Game Awards. Trust the plan.
