Yes. FF VIII is the best one by far. Unfortunately, Sakaguchi's envy was roused by VII and VIII being such massive successes. He wanted to take over the franchise with IX. Instead, he made a middling game while Kitase, Toriyama, Nomura, and Nojima made X into another classic. But at that point there was no stopping Sakaguchi. He turned XI into an MMO. He turned XII into an offline MMO. XI itself led to a loss of much talent (Brave Fencer team was dissolved for XI as an example.)
At that point, Sakaguchi's war for FF was over. The good audience stopped looking forward to FF games, as they were clearly not the same as they were in the golden age of VII, VIII, X.
In the meantime, MMO junkies began prostrating at NES and SNES games that they had never played. An effort to portray themselves as "legitimate."
This leads to the current situation, where the suits made another MMO and further compounded these issues. Everyone involved is to blame tbh. The devs of VII, VIII, and X should not have acquiesced to Sakaguchi. They should have called him what he is: A hanger-on and hollow man. But this is one of the downfalls of Japanese society.

FFL2 is where the series peaked

      >SaGa is where FF peaked
This but unironically, to this day SaGa is more in line with the OG FF identity than any FF past the NES

I think people hyper focus on their first "main" final fantasy game largely due to their age. For me, it's 6. A friend a couple years younger swears on 7, another friend a couple years younger than that swears on 8.

But final fantasy tactics is the best.

FF10 is the peak. 12 is pretty good, but it shows the step down in gameplay/story and did also piggy back on world building by using tactics universe. Solid game, but the quality they were pushing for is noticeably diminished. 13 is ever further down on the inferior scale and 15 is on par with 12, but nothing has been as good as 6, 7, 10 since those games.

FF7 is in no way the "peak". There is a reason why the FF7 fandom (and tie-ins, remakes, etc) focus so heavily on Midgar. All the fun is crammed into the dieselpunk dystopia on Disc 1. Disc 2 on is like a 2nd rate rehash of FFVI. The rest of the game is just so tonally and artistically different; forgettable (or even silly) compared to where you spend most of disc 1. The world outside feels empty and small. No one's fondest memories are of disc 2. If you're going to list a Playstation Final Fantasy as "peak", then the answer would be 10 as it is fun all the way through.

No? FF7's entire world is fantastic. Getting the bronco and exploring was mindblowing. And yes, I played 6 before 7. Midgar is good, but is the weakest part of the game.

This. The tie-ins focusing on Midgar doesn't matter because they're all shit anyway

ff10 is good, and ff12 is really well executed with the best script in the series, but one of the most bland and boring stories & worlds.

I like Amano's art but I haven't played any of the games for more than probably 5 hours. Be honest; are any of them actually any fun?

9 isn't as good as 8, but it's still better than anything that came before 7 and WAYYY better than anything after the PSX era

I've played up to XV, XI, XIV and Tactics games included and enjoyed all of them. Some are more flawed than others, but I wouldn't be able to pick my favorite or least favorite, I think they're all at the very least good.

I’m really enjoying Final Fantasy XVI at the moment. Hot take but I’m about 30 hours in and it’s peak FF for me.
