Did it make the original re4 obsolete?

Did it make the original re4 obsolete? Did they only make this remake because zoomers need to have the most up to date graphics to enjoy a game? And does it surpass the original at or is it a soulless remake that should not have been made?

No it didn't make the original obsolete
Catering to zoomers is probably one of the reasons
No it doesn't surpass the original but it's a good game and the best of the nuRE games

No, the games are very different from each other and both offer unique experiences. Although the remake is a great game, it can't surpass the original just on the merits of how influential and unique it was at the time. Original RE4 was the archetype for the modern linear setpiece driven action adventure game, RE4R is just a very good entry in the genre.

if you have any love for the original and you've played it at all in the last 10 years then you will be shocked at how much the remake differs. it's really hit me lately how insulting it is to fans of the originals remaking games truly is. leon is really a pussy b***h in this game.

Why remake feels sluggish and slow?

        Anonymous

It's a way to translate the limitation of tank controls into a modern control system. if 4make wasn't sluggish you'd have bullshit like the alt control scheme in re1make where you're effortlessly kiting zombies and juking them.

Wrong, the game is already hard. boat controls is bloat and only makes it harder

because they gotta have wind-up frames for just turning a different direction, like in real life
some of the most critically acclaimed (for fun factor) are games that just let you turn or attack with almost no wind-up
and the rest of the critically acclaimed games where you move like molasses are normalgay movie games like Red Dead Redemption or TLOU

The first webm is very silly but this one is just showcasing that the games are balanced differently. There's nothing wrong with them making it so you can't cheese everything with melee attacks that have a hitbox the size of a tidal wave.

        >There's nothing wrong with them making it so you can't cheese everything with melee attacks that have a hitbox the size of a tidal wave.
Yeah but it's so satisfying to do

        Anonymous

? Every contextual attack in RE4 has a "tidal wave" hitbox. Leon's kick, Ada's kick, Whesker's punch, etc
The point is that you have a tool for knocking down a crowd of enemies so you can reposition. That is the very base design of the game. It's rooted in beat 'em up design where you have to use "tidal wave" hitbox attacks to help reposition there as well.

Yeah and it turns the game into a joke. There's no need for the kick to hit the entire screen when it's basically free and the same function was already covered by the shotgun

            >turns the game into a joke
If you genuinely find RE4 to be a "joke" difficulty game, I should inform you that the game becomes easier when you lose multiple times over 🙂
            >no need for it to hit the entire screen when its basically free
No. You need to shoot an enemy in the head in order for them to enter a staggered state so that you may kick them.
            >same function is covered by shotgun
No. The kick has an even higher range than the shotgun. Shotgun is only used in a serious pinch

              >1 bullet
Yes, you need to shoot them with 1 bullet. Yes they walk slowly. Yes, Resident Evil 4 IS a videogame with a distinct playstyle. You wait for the enemies to clump up, then you shoot 1 in the head and use the kick to get them all on the ground so you can reposition and then consider your options from there. Im sure the game would have been much better if the devs decided to limit every single kick to only hit right in front of you, would have been much better for the game right?

I was fine with the gunsway and having to wait to focus aim.
This is a fricking action game though, you're constantly in skirmishes and fights. It's frustrating to deal with compared to a survival horror where it makes things more stressful and direct combat isn't always encouraged.

No remake ever replaces the original. In the case of the RE remakes all of them are their own experiences and the originals are still absolutely worth playing.
In terms of quality I'd call the RE4 remake a sidegrade. I like a lot of the new stuff it adds, I like stronger focus on exploration, but in terms of feel it's a little too loose compared to the original.

It plays like a generic TPS game now. The original RE4 plays like an incredibly refined and expertly-tuned arcade game. The remake will age like milk, and the original will continue to stand on its own.

It's funny how people hate, in retrospect, the Ashley segments in the original, because the common opinion that escorting npcs in games is awful.
But RE4 original was the absolute least offensive escort mission in any vidya. You could tell her to hide in a dumpster. She snaps behind your back when aiming. She ducks down if you aim at her. And generally when moving around, she's snapped behind your back. She's like a backpack except for moments where the enemies get too close and she has to scream. Really not bad at all. It's pure arcadey and it works perfectly.
Now, the remake has her running around trailing behind you, because it tried to give her actual logic. Because it's gotta be more 'real'. And she's much worse as a gameplay element, at the end of it.

        Anonymous

        >Because it's gotta be more 'real'.
That's the problem with the game in a nutshell. If you know anything about game design and what makes games feel good to play, looking at 5 seconds of gameplay of the remake instantly tells you all you need to know. The original is snappy and responsive, while the new one is like slogging through molasses.

    >Did it make the original re4 obsolete?
    No.
    >Did they only make this remake because zoomers need to have the most up to date graphics to enjoy a game?
    Yep.
    >And does it surpass the original at or is it a soulless remake that should not have been made?
A remake was inevitable I'm afraid. One day we'll have the original RE remade a second time. One day we'll have RE7 and RE8. One day we'll have GTA 4 & 5 alongside RDR2.
However to answer both the first and last questions. It can't surpass the original.
Sure, better models, textures, handling, quality of life make RE4R easier to get into but... here's the diference, RE4 paved the way and inspired many games and franchises, with Dead Space being one of the most prominent. From all the mechanics, to handling, to how cinematics we're integrated. This was all RE4.
Suppose in the same way that DOOM(2016) doesn't hold a candle to Doom(1993).
At the end of the day, both RE4R and DOOM(2016) are just games, nothing more, nothing less. Nothing wrong with that, but the pedestals are for the originals.

    >Did it make the original re4 obsolete?
No and I like both. They play pretty differently to be honest. I like the knife parry mechanic, but you need to understand that it's necessary for the game as the stuns are not dependable due to headshots not guaranteeing the stun and reticle spread

Pretty much everything is a downgrade.
      >Leon less of a Chad
      >Saddler is the most generic boring old man now
      >Luis is a loser
      >Krauser's VA is woefully miscast and his relationship with Leon is worse. Also never shuts the frick up with the rookie, rookie, rookie shit.
      >Ada's VA is God awful
Salazar is the only character and VA that I thought turned out okay, bar the character design (he looks like ass compared to his OG design).
Merchant is fine. Nowhere near as iconic as the OG, but the new guy has a charm of his own. Only downside is that his constant repeating of lines gets old.
