Did people in Japan even actually buy their games?

People nowhere bought their games.
Console players don't buy videogames (they don't like that term).
They buy "interactive narrative experiences"
Japan Studio made videogames and that was a no-no, only incels play something where there isn't a cutscenes every 5 minutes
>shadow of the colossus
>not an interactive narrative experience
Burh you have to actually climb and stab the titans and that takes skill. It's not a walking sim.
What do you think interactive means?
>its another PC fat pretending they buy games and aren't mostly pirates
lol
Japan doesn't buy anything that's not made by Nintendo.
Yeah.
Whole point is that not everything has to be a giant ass blockbuster.
Nintendo gets this, you got the big A-listers like Mario, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Pokemon, gets the budgets in the black, publishers happy, investors happy with their dividends and this means that the onus isn't on their smaller titles like Metroid, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem to overperform. Fire Emblem Three Houses only sold 3 million, but it's an SRPG, that makes it the best performing SRPG of all time, and it doesn't need to be doing COD numbers.
Absolutely no reason why Japan Studio couldn't keep making fun and weird shit while the western studios make the movie games Sony wanted so desperately. Then again, a lot of their western studios probably should've kept to their wheelhouse too. Guerilla, Sucker Punch and Bend are absolutely fricking straining to do open world in 8th/9th gen.
>no reason why Japan Studio couldn't keep making fun and weird shit
It's because their shit doesn't sell close to a third of Nintendo's B-List shitters while sucking up money like an AAA studio. Last Guardian sealed their fate, you can't just keep bleeding money like this and expect to be allowed to bleed some more.
There's a difference between "This game appeals a bigger potential userbase and will sell several million copies" and "This game's scope and complexity are big". You call Xenoblade "smaller" than Animal Crossing, which is true for the former description but definitely not the latter.
>Did people in Japan
Stopped reading there.
Aside from their portable games and maybe The Last Guardian (although it did underperform, it still sold like 80k in its first week), nope.
No, they didn't. Their games were in that weird limbo where they were too "japanese" for westerners and too "westerner" for jthe apanese.
Japan Studio was primarily responsible for fostering the relationship betwee. Sony and Japanese 3rd parties by publishing and localising a bunch of small, niche titles from Devs that couldn't do it themselves. They were the reason why "Want Japanese games? Then you must pick PS over Xbox" saying was a thing.
Now it's either Nintendo, or Clouded Leopard Entertainment (ex Japan Studio people) doing that
Stop perpetuating this meme, Japan Studio barely localized or published anything.
If you are going to make super niche weird games you better make them available to the most people possible or else you'll eat a dick. And that's exactly what happened.
Nips only play gachashit.
>i-it doesn't count!
EU is a PC region, same as China.
