        Anonymous

The Gen IV starters were the absolute best they could do it.
        >Torterra = world turtle, has an ecosystem growing on its shell
        >Infernape = Sun Wukong, a monkey warrior and the protagonist of Journey to the West
        >Empoleon = emperor penguin with inspiration from Napoleon Bonaparte

        But then you get
        >Western royalty + snake
        >General + pig
        >Samurai + otter
        >Warrior + hedgehog
        >Witch + fox
        >Ninja + frog
        >Archer + owl
        >Siren + seal
        >Wrestler + tiger
        >Drummer + monkey
        >Soccer player + rabbit
        >Spy + chameleon
        >Magician + cat
        >Flamenco dancer + duck

They feel like human roles being applied to animals. Like at least "emperor penguin" exists in nature, that's something they can use. I like Skeledirge because it looks like an animal that can appear in nature, it doesn't look like something trying to imitate a human. I like Infernape because it's based on a fictional monkey in Chinese classical fiction but Emboar being based on Zhang Fei, a human general in Chinese classical fiction is bordering on too much. I can take exception with Fighting and Psychic types because they've always been designed with humanoid traits (brawn and brain), but it seems to be a trend with the later starters. Some ideas (spy chameleon, siren seal) are good, but not necessarily for Pokémon. Like Incineroar taking inspiration from Tiger Mask doesn't mean a wrestling tiger should be in Pokémon.

well written, I agree as someone who liked humanoid mons but it used to be a Fighting and Psychic trait. Which made sense. Naturally, Fighting mons are about martial arts and they usually like to train so they were always a weird missing link between the human and pokémon species, inspired by them.
Even if Conkeldurr literally mixing concrete is a bit too much, at least he was fighting type and it affected the lore (apparently humans learned from ancient Conkeldurrs how to do this).

All these new mons, in the past they'd have probably been fighting or psychic as their secondary type.

Also want to add that I always wanted an "Elephantom", a Ghost (possibly Ghost/Electric if it's reanimated) elephant based on an elephant graveyard. I think it's creative but would still fit in Pokémon's world.

          >human roles
          >siren
At least say opera singer, then.

I originally wrote that but I thought it would seem disingenuous since someone could point out that it's also based on a mythological siren since it's Water/Fairy and its Japanese name alludes to it. Sirens are typically depicted as human women rather than animals pretending to be human, so it's not like Sun Wukong who is a monkey with anthropomorphic traits (monkeys being anthropomorphic isn't that big of a deal anyway, it's just annoying when they get a full drumset). I think Primarina has a good concept, it just sides too close to human, especially since its Z-Move is Oceanic Operetta.

a little of a little of b. something that you notice is that starting from gen 7 the starters changed because they lost something that made them feral. or at least something that made them out to be something that can roam in the wild.

It's becoming more and more like Digimon design wise while the games are getting worse and worse to the point that the game playing itself is now a selling point. It's my belief that if a game respects itself so little that it needs a feature to play itself, it's a fundamentally flawed game and needs to be completely rebuilt.

This kind of stuff confuses the hell out of my. Like, I get that their initial logic was probably "Oh, plays could find a Garchomp soaring in the skies, that would be a fun encounter!", but like, when you put it in and it looks this bad, I feel like anyone with a sense of logic would say:

      1. We should touch this up as it looks very bad.
      Or
      2. We should drop this idea and just have Garchomp on the ground.

So why do they make it, it looks like shit, and then they just leave it? Like if they don't want to apply the effort to fix it, they could at least remove it in favor of a grounded Garchomp. Is it that it's more effort to simply delete it than they are willing to put forth? Are pokemon games nothing but first attempts with no going back?

It changed but not necessarily for the better. I'd love it if they started releasing Digimon-like designs. Give me more armored mons like Aggron, Bisharp, Corviknight, Genesect, Rhyperior..
    And other edgy designs.
Every generation has those. I'd love it if we had more of that.
Those 3 starters are starting to. grow on me as Megaman characters but my initial reaction was
    >WHAT THE FRICK IS THIS SHIT LMAO THEY'RE NEVER LEAVING THE PC
and that's still my reaction for most of the new dex.
    And for SWSH.
I love the Megaman / Digimon designs I DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THOSE but since Unova there's been this issue in which a lot of the dex feel like cereal mascots or something doodled by a preschooler. The designs are just too DUMB and childish in a way they never felt like before.
All of Kanto still feels nicely shaped to me. Muk, Voltorb, they're still rpg creatures to me, get my drift? Designs were simple but still represented the Pokémon franchise in a good way.
Johto has this roundy aesthetic, still extremely cool to the point most Johto mons are SHIT and I still use them because of the visuals.
Hoenn is a mixture, still pretty cool and they're well designed monsters for the most part. Sinnoh tries to be edgier, I dig it even if I don't like most of those mons.
Then Unova crashes in and we start getting things that are just laughable and no serious person would want in their game. Volbeat from Hoenn was the only one that made me feel like
    >This shouldn't have made it to the final product wtf is this crap?
    and I never used it.
I don't even remember the Sinnoh mons.
But Unova is plagued with Volbeat tier flunks, saved by some extremely cool mons and good gameplay.
Kalos was a nice return to the Kanto era, I feel like Kalos small dex was well curated and they felt like first 3-Gens Pokémon.

But Gens 7, 8 and 9 are just fool of shit like Volbeat and Garbodor, they just belong to a shittier franchise like Yokai Watch or Dragon Quest

Whatever trends were big then aren't the same as they are now. They also didn't feel the need to follow a theme or a role and there also weren't a bunch of middlemen and marketers that decided the roster rather than the design team themselves.

It's gotten corporate, but overall the creativity is still there, albeit to a fault.

Whatever trends or designs they're trying to follow fricking suck. So I say it's fair to claim it got worse from a consumer point of view.
The first generations indeed were free of meddling though, they're what set the standard of WHAT is a Pokémon, by being the first products.

        Anonymous

That is a fair point. I do think that recycling Charizard each and every gen would have been a negative, so I get why they try to go with a theme with the new starters, so that there isn't an overlap. You can line up all the starters and tell who's who.

I know the Nido duo is intentional but this is what I mean. A better example could be the electric critters.

Hey that's the GOOD kind of rehashing. I literally make teams composed of mons with that... anatomy.
          Tyranitar, Aggron, and those 4.
Also those are from the first Generation, maybe it was to show that there's some kind of consistency to the Pokémon biology and there were multiple T-Rexy species for lack of a better word.
Bulky machines of destruction, I like it.

            >T-Rexy
Kaiju. They've been doing the grass maiden since Roselia and even Bellossom but those are spread out between different gens and like you said, I like comparing and even pairing them in teams. Familiarity sells.

Get an identity of catching super fricking cool and edgy monsters and include landscape destruction. Turn based, death, a story about saving the world, 8 cities to visit with their own bosses, an elemental chart and about 150 creatures to catch.

If there's any group of people looking at the Pokemon series with rose tinted glasses, it's zoomers who grew up with Pokemon as this already established force in the world, and they don't want to face the fact that the Pokemon games they grew up with are not as good as the Pokemon games that started the series. I bet most people who talk about how much they enjoy the DS games only ever played them on an emulator, or they'd know what a slow slog it is to play compared to every Pokemon game that came before it. Game Freak has been skating by on the bare minimum for so long now, I actually feel bad for kids stuck with this piece of shit Switch game as their first Pokemon experience. It's a damn shame.

              Anonymous

Nice reverse psychology, the accusers are actually the guilty ones, they preemptively attack as a cope mechanism because it'd mean their experience was inferior to ours, which is sad but true.
It was just Sinnoh I don't use any speed hacks for Gen 5 and it plays perfectly fine.
But yeah I tried Platinum Renegade without speed hacks and it was such a fricking slog. I'll add that I don't even like the graphics more than the GBA era.
In any case they are appreciated for the sheer content and gameplay upgrades, Gen 4 was the split and Pokémon becoming more competitive.
The 3ds+ eras have nothing to be appreciated for except the Mega Evolutions giving the sickest possible designs ever to some Pokémon beyond their limits but that got canned as a gimmick. If by now every single Pokémon, or at least about 200 has their own Megas (and they got rid of Mega stones), the franchise would be worth buying just to see how your old mons are updated.

It blows my mind how battles haven't been optimized in the entire series. You still have to wait for HP bars to scroll down, you still have to wait for every individual stat change message to display if you get a stat boost/debuff, pokemon still get hit 1 at a time from sandstorm/poison/burn damage, and you still have to wait for crit/effectiveness messages.
All of this shit is very easily optimized, but they never do it. As for gen 4, if you compare battle speed to gen 5, the latter's over 5x faster, it baffles the mind.

                >FF at least pre-ps1 since i cant speak for anything after 6: ranges from as fast as you can press to a very short delay, damage numbers bounce a little, messages flash by rather fast, crits display a mere graphic or fast line of text
                >Pokemon: have to wait for the Fight button to get pressed in and play its sound, have to choose your move, have to wait for the hp bar to scroll down (speed is gen-dependant), have to watch each individual hp bar scroll down if you attacked more than 1 foe, even the fastest text speed is many orders of magnitude slower than other games, have to wait 3 seconds for the crit/type effectiveness messages to stop showing

I can respect appreciating the gameplay changes and backend stuff that the later gens introduced. Plenty of it gets baked into your average romhack for a reason, it's good shit that makes more sense for the most part. I just don't understand why anyone who actually enjoys Pokemon would play anything but romhacks these days. You get the best of both worlds, and for free no less.

I think it's the easy way out to say "nah, old was bad too". Is it that hard to believe Ken Sugimori was simply that much better of an artist that all of his 151 mons might be liked by people?
They just work. That's how art is. You can try to evaluate it objectively but I'd never say Kantomons are mediocre because they just fricking work. Art, concept, execution, sprites, whatever.
No one playing for the first time would have their immersion broken and say
            >Wow this mon is bad
because they all blend in nicely.

That's not the case the further you go into the franchise. I posted above that the first time I legitimately remember thinking something was shitty, was with the Volbeat duo in Hoenn. That just couldn't be appreciated by me to any capacity. More and more mons that are just jarring start being created and the last 3 Gens are the pinnacle of that.
I'll add I'd try to complain about Sinnoh but the designs were so boring I can't even remember anything to complain about.

his cohesiveness is incredibly underrated especially with gen 2. although i think it was mentioned somewhere that they cutezified a lot of the johto dex you can still scramble gen 1 and gen 2 together and not bat an eye. "Old bad too" wasn't even my point. It's nearly impossible for anyone to make an objective analysis of the first gen because of how prolific it is. Your post alone is telling me you started with Gen 1, and you clearly have a great sense of fondness for it.
              >Is it that hard to believe Ken Sugimori was simply that much better of an artist that all of his 151 mons might be liked by people?
It actually is, because he did not by any means design every single one. The poster child and mascot of the franchise with the most merchandise was not even designed by him. Most of the Pokémon started out as simple sprites that Sugimori mostly reinterpreted for key art. This is why there tend to be inconsistencies in early materials.

I've been hardened against giving that much credit to a single artist for why things used to be better. We might be talking about how Final Fantasy was great because of Tetsuya Nomura if not for how much we've learned about him in the director's role as being a clueless tryhard. I think the reality is that even flawed artists and concepts are much more successful when they're driven by a culture that embraces sanity rather than rejecting it. Much of the differences I see between new and old things reflect that in one way or another. The original concept of pokemon was simple and resonates with people's normal side. All of today's concepts are ambitious and only resonate with people who identify with a niche. There's so many niches now that companies want to cast a net to all of them which makes for a terrible experience for pretty much everybody.

tl;dr Ambition bad, not new or old.

I haven't seen the new pokemon that've leaked, but suffice it to say the ambition doesn't lie in a single filler poke. In fact, pokemon is so ambitious now that it's constantly looking for ways to expand despite how much filler there is in everything they do. Their ambition not only allows for lazy, contrived ideas, it incentivizes them.

                Anonymous

Then you shouldn't say that all the concepts are ambitious, if you haven't even seen them. Ambition is the last word I would use to describe anything that Game Freak is doing with the Pokemon series right now, and I don't know how you came to such a ridiculous conclusion that being TOO ambitious is Game Freak's problem right now.

                Anonymous

I don't need to see the new designs to know what to expect ffs, I know what they've been making all these years already. I also don't think Gamefreak can just make whatever they want. The ambition comes from over their heads and I get the impression they're miserable about it. If I'm wrong about that then so be it, but if you think pokemon's aggressive marketing, accelerated development cycles, and product line expansions aren't a problem of ambition then I say that's a ridiculous conclusion on your part.

It's not a problem of ambition, it's a problem of inertia. Nothing ever happens to change the direction that Game Freak is on, so Game Freak just keeps going in the same direction. If there was a single Pokemon gen that actually bombed, and I mean really bombed, then maybe they would have had some sort of reason to change the way they've been doing things for literal decades. Unfortunately, that's never happened. So Game Freak is going to stick with what works, until it doesn't, because they don't care enough to change it. I don't know how you read ambition from their behavior, but you read it completely wrong.

Modern expectations require them to be ambitious, which is why they're paying lip service to an open world experience. They're afraid the people they're trying to sell to won't be interested otherwise, so they're constituated by those ambitions as well. You're not convincing me that's the state of affairs isn't driven by that.

Yes because only a fricking moron thinks Sugimori designed every old mon. The girl who made Sylveon and shit like Musharna created fricking PIKACHU and Charizard.

it's novelty. Pokemon was a new undefined thing. the old ones didn't have a standard to be held to. there was no expectations for them. now there are expectations so new bad designs are judged more harshly.

They were created like that because it's Gen 1. That's what defines their types, Fighting is about human martial arts and Psychic about bending spoons with their mind.
It's the standard. Alakazan has 5000 IQ for problem solving, Mewtwo is a humanified Mew, and the Machop line admired humans and learned how do fight and bulk up from them. But with the exception of Mewtwo who was specifically created by humans, these still felt like animals first mostly imitating the human world.
Also I repeat that's how these types were conceived at all. Fighting needs a human like figure to do punches and kicks and the knowledge of it. Psychic is about great mind power to do tricks.
They do have a pass, no one is complaining about humanoid mons if they had one of those types attached to them.

Headcanon is not always a bad thing, it's just rationalizing what the author put in the game and why it might be that way.
Fighting is fricking obviously about martial arts, their moves are punches and kicks. They had to be humanoid since conception to some degree.
You want Psychic? Your psychic mons that Gen are Jynx, Mr Mime, Mewtwo and Mew who is some sort of God. And they're literally brain powers. Both of these had some human element from the very birth of the type.

              Anonymous

Except that's exactly the problem with these kinds of discussions about Pokémon. Almost everyone has their own idea of what Pokémon is like and what they think it should be. Your rationalizations here about types are still oversimplifications because types are not so simple as "psychic only does psychic things and that must mean human-like". Psyduck and Golduck have had psychic capabilities since their inception but don't bear the psychic type nor are they humanoid. A literal bug (Butterfree) is capable of learning psychic moves. Slowpoke and Slowbro are psychic types yet have none of the qualities you mentioned. Types have always been abstractions to some extent.

Kinda. But they clearly made some sense to the creator, both the ones you mentioned are morons that happen to have great hidden power in their brains before evolving into Golduck / Slowking and mastering them.
I see some intent still related to the psychic type (and the duck line obviously got fricked even if Gamefreak never confirms it.... GOLDuck should have been the yellow duck and PSYduck its evolution with a psychic type slapped on it)

This line of thinking feels very restrictive to me. It has psychic powers so it MUST be psychic. I don't think a lot of Gen 1 designs were even made with types in mind and they simply decided after the fact what felt the most fitting or what gaps needed filling. Especially in black and white, nothing about say, the Nidoran line's designs says Poison. They may have gone too far in this respect because you end up with a lot of repeats like a ton of Grass/Poison and Rock/Ground.

The response is that there is no one blanket rule for why old Pokemon worked and new Pokemon don't work as well.

There is something subtle about the design philosophies of the different gen that people can't put their finger on, that has changed with later games.

I think the best example is Leafeon and Glaceon. Glaceon for whatever reason, looks like a gen 1 evee form. Where as Leafeon looks like it's "fan made".

This is probably because early eveelutions had a detail threshold that leafeon breaks with its over detailed leaves.

I think people do in fact, crave some of the older styled angular designs rather than the more spherical new designs they keep creating.

The entire concept feels like a Greninja rehash looking at it closely.

I can faintly understand, yeah. Back then they were all 'just Pokémon', now they're 'Pokémon for... [X category]
No doubt someone likes the trash that is Primarina but it's just because of their particular niche maybe they happen to love mermaids

Also the colors and textures match with the series. It's reminiscent of Magmar with the red/orange and yellow, or Charizard / Charmeleon.

Maybe the trends would get a pass if the execution was good. No matter how much one criticizes Kanto for having simple item-like designs, it did everything well.
Hoenn mons are fricking cool even if they break a rule or two. As you can see in Gen 9, people did awesome designs with the leaked concepts, they COULD work with competent designers.

Gen 3's designs was literally the point where people started comparing them to Digimon. People only think Gen 3's designs are good because the amount of fans that started with Gen 3+ drowned out the fans that was here since the very beginning and most of them left. Gen 3 was in general was just a massive scapegoat and had immense pressure put on it to deliver a sequel after the OG games (First two gens being more like a Gen 1 and 1.5 rather than something completely different from each other). I believe there was absolutely no way to satisfy fans starting anew on more advanced hardware and without Tajiri at the helm, the original games having been pretty much a decade long ordeal of fleshing out ideas. They did an amazing job on RSE all things considered. A sequel was never gonna resemble the first games 1:1

No point in paying attention to zombie pokemon. Gen 3 was the point at which they definitively decided it would be a neverending franchise but still did a great job trying to make the best games they could, but 3D and lack of mastery of it, the newer art design teams, and questionable gameplay changes all contributed to making something no longer recognizable to a person who was there from the start.

Younger people just getting into pokemon now may have a different evaluation as their gaming sensibilities aren't influenced by boomer games

I don't have friends so I've never tested this.
If you're trying to copy pokemon to violet you can just the same save file from scarlet. Works fine.

I can't imagine this as an animal in the wild at all. At least GF should have the decency to make mons like this evolve through friendship - not sure if you have realized, but mons evolving through friendship with a trainer means that they don't exist in nature, so I can accept them being more humanlike, they literally evolve through the energy of a bond with a human, socializing together and stuff.

No shit moron, there's a reason starters are super fricking rare in the wild

even if they're extremely fricking rare the starters until gen 7 at least looked like they could possibly be found in the wild.

There are lizard men wearing wrestling belts and holding spoons living in the wild in Gen 1. Frick off with your fanfics, reddit.

I'm not sure if that gameplay part is supposed to mean anything in-universe. Starters are still wild animals, and Pokémon professors happen to have 3 of them to gift newbies but they're not supposed to be rarer than a Dratini or Hydreigon I think.
It's just a gameplay thing to make them 1 per playthrough.

There are lizard men wearing wrestling belts and holding spoons living in the wild in Gen 1. Frick off with your fanfics, reddit.

The dex justifies the first one by saying Machop travels the land learning how to fight, and Machamp has mastered all martial arts.
Abra only escapes, so there's probably no wild Kadabras as only a trainer could make it evolve.

There's still the oddballs of Jynx and Mr Mime in the wild, those just... exist like that in weird societies I guess. They're probably hunted and used as slaves.

This image made me realize how much lower the prioritization for character face readability became. I honest to god think they should impose a restriction on their character artists where if the character details can't display correctly within GBA Pokemon sprite size/color limits then rework the design.

... can we return to sprites already? This might have been a good design in the first 5 generations I can see myself loving a skull crocodile back in Unova but these ultra smooth, zero detail textures are the death of Pokémon. Looks like a generic mobile game.

            Just like in 3D then.

Modern sprite based Pokémon would probably look like the right one while incorporating hundreds of creatures, so yes I want it. They were getting bolder with Gen 5 already. Making a game as massive as Pokémon with those right graphics back in the gba era would have been impossible, but now I'd take it.
Also just you fricking wait, when hackrom artists get to drawing Fuecoco for the gba roms I bet my fricking souls it's gonna look passable, it's just the bad 3d ruining it.

But they already have art, the dex or whatever the frick ingame has a small artwork that looks nothing like the 3d model.

The double kick vids work because they literally recycle the animations for all of them and it’s a shitty one to boot.
The Mr Mime gif is literally the exception to the rule and is one of the 0.2% of pokemon that got any animation other than idle near t-posing.

Imagine seeing shit like the moronic humanoid cat and bird in the wild, in a pack in a forest or solitary on the plains. It doesn’t work.
Literally only the croc would be a viable actual animal. The others only work with humans around and human structures.

    >Gen 4: a raging chimpanzee, an ironclad emperor penguin, and a tortoise with an entire ecosystem growing on its shell
    >Gen 5: a massive boar monster, a Japanese otter with a shell sword, and a regal garden snake

    >Gen 6: a fox stylized to be a witch, a frog stylized to be a ninja, and a chipmunk stylized to be a dreadnought

Japanese otters hold shells, turning a shell into a sword is not a jobmon. It would be a jobmon if it looked like samurai armor. You can't even tell Samurott's shells are swords in the original game.

this is the best design they've made since gen 3. Finally something that actually feels like a gen 1-2 pokemon instead of overdesigned trash.
