Yes, it was as good and interesting as this entire franchise could get. Went downhill from next game.

Peaked with San Andreas. 4 was decent fun but it took a massive step backwards from SA in most aspects and felt pretty limited. Everything after that was just terrible, not that I think most of these games are all that great anyway but San Andreas still holds up and can be a lot of fun.

San Andreas feels like it was the start of shit going wrong. The map was certainly nice, but the story took a more serious turn, and things have only been going downhill since then. They take themselves far too seriously these days.

    If you mean radio—yes
    If you mean the setting—yes
If you mean the gameplay… There's just not much to do in VC. Yeah sure, the missions are pretty interesting, and you could collect stuff. But beyond that, hanging around town gets boring quick. The only thing that it has is the setting.

      >hanging around town gets boring quick

      So, like in every GTA?
Sandbox genre is literally "entertain yourself with whatever stuff deadlines and tech progress allowed us to add at the moment". It's usually not that much.

Different characters, pretty sure you kill the man your wife cheats on you with. Who here is a “conservative” is your entire brain revolved around the American “media”?

No you don't. Micheal's family are pieces of shit who get ZERO comeuppance throughout the entire story because the game wants you to sympathize with Micheal despite the game giving no reason why you should because they're all bigger hypocrites than Micheal.

at least when Lamar calls Franklin out on his bullshit it's because he knows Franklin is only trying to go legit so his ex can take him back.

                >I need happy endings in all my media

Then stick to Disney Plus, it’s grand theft auto. Michael kills dozens of people to get rich, he’s not a good person like one of your Harry Potters or whatever.

                No
                Easily IV

IV was great, and people who complain about the gritty NYC setting and somber tone should stick to Saint’s Row

                Anonymous

it's bad writing because Michael's family are easily worse people than Michael himself but the game acts like they're supposed to be in the right and wants you to agree with them over michael.

as i said before it works with Franklin because Lamarr (while an idiot) knows he's not genuine about wanting to go legit and it works Trevor because he's his own worst enemy.

Yes you do there’s a mission where you hunt down the butthole’s convertible

no the most you do it steel chair his wife's yoga instructor (who she was also fricking) in the face with a laptop.

That was Trevor too, did you even play the game?

Yes you do there’s a mission where you hunt down the butthole’s convertible

That’s your psychiatrist, you have the option to kill him because he lets it slip that he’s going to publish a tell all novel about you.

the GTAs on that whole console just nailed it
knocked it right out of the park
went from some semi obscure PC games that not many played (i had the PS1 port at least) to the literal biggest name in vidya overnight with 3, and then kept it going for two more full games all on the same system

depends on if you liked the vibe of 00s NYC, 80s miami, or 90s LA really
games all played more or less the same, and while gfx did improve from 3 -> VC -> SA it wasnt substantial enough to make a difference. i can definitely say as a kid 3 was my favorite one to play through. but i think SA is the most refined game, while VC had the best cheatcodes

I don't like to think there is a "best" GTAIII-era game. Think of them being separate parts of a single canon and put them all together for a full experience. People live and die over the course of games and even a radio DJ has a character arc. They're all great, plain and simple.

I want to go back to the time before GTA Vice City released. The hype surrounding it was killing me pre release. I don't think I've been as hyped for a video game as much as that one.

It peaked with 3. VC was a rushed expansion of 3 that needed at least one more year in development.
SA was too bloated for its own good. It's impressive R* could fit all they did, but large sections of the game drag on, and mission quality is extremely uneven. It's also when the writing became completely childish, and mission structure became rigid.
4 was when R* stopped making games and started making "experiences" which is still a design philosophy that's stagnating games to this day.
3 was perfect. I still consider it the best game ever

Naw GTA IV is their creative peak imo.
VC is a close second though. There’s just something so special about it. Not that SA or 3 were bad games, but something about Vice City just hit the nail on the head with the aesthetic and arcadey gameplay.

The older I get, the more I feel GTA III was the peak. Still had the most fun with VC overall, and SA was great too, but if I had to replay any of them, I'm picking SA last.
