tl;dr, there's this whacky belief that one of the twelve tribes of Israel emigrated to Japan, and that Japanese people are god's chosen people. There's zero dna evidence to support this.
meanwhile, the Unification Church is that hyper Christian organization in Asia that puts its people in high positions of power, like Shinzo Abe. Both these things have been around far longer than Megami Tensei was first released, and the obsession with YHWH and other Christian elements can be perceived as some underlying message
But no, Kaneko is just a dork. Nothing really to it.
I think from 4 on, they got some other dude and kaneko does... something else now? pretty sure he's still at fatlus, probably some manager/advisor role. also yeah a few bosses inluding medusa were done by guest artists

>Did the usual SMT artist die while making 4
Yes, Kaneko's last game was SJ.
That said, 4 still had kino designs like Minotaur, Lilith, Archangels etc.
The archangels looked like complete shit in-game, but I really like how Doi drew them in the promotional art. He couldn't save Lilith, though. I don't know what the frick the designer was thinking with that one. How the frick did a wienerroach monster become Adam's first wife anyway?

Its an alien wearing a matador suit I cant not love it
and yeah meme aside it is bold as frick to put that in your game and it wont happen again because everything is safe and boring now
Man, never had a boss giving me such a raging boner so fast before. It was legitimately distracting and it was hard to fight off the urge to just start jacking off to her mid-fight.
When am I supposed to get spells, the questionnaire at the beginning made me a mc that has magic points as the biggest stat but im not getting any spells, just a gun that is pretending to be my spell selection.
You don't. Strange Journey is one of the games that comes under the "MC never learns magic" category.
Instead you get OP guns.
well this is bullshit, none of my selection so far has been great except the gun that had 3 gun skills, right now I have the one that only has Paralysis but hits all enemies with the normal attack.
I should also expand, magic isn't a useless stat for you. It affects your defense against enemy magic, and slightly increases your success in negotiations.
So it's a good strategy to just but a metric ton of Magic Incenses that are strangely available to buy in the shop from very early into the game? My pockets are kinda heavy for trying to do that hunting competition in sector B
Well, I'd sooner pump strength so your weapons deal more damage and you don't need to waste MP on every encounter, but you can do whatever. It goes without saying, but always use incense on yourself. Though I can't remember if it's even possible to waste them on demons in SJ, probably is.
Player stats don't matter a whole lot, just pump vitality so you have as much hp as possible to avoid game overs. Demons do most of the heavy lifting until the insane endgame gear so damage isn't ever something to be worried about over element coverage.

Medusa among others came out of a collaboration with some Kamen Rider artist or something
You gotta deal with it. V replaces these artworks with Doi's art
Thought it looked like shit as well but then i saw his older stuff and remembered i love this type of niche gothic artsyle so now i kinda appreciate it more. Lucifer still looks goofy af though
>scornful prude goddess showing off her panties
I don't. I like the design in a vacuum a lot, but as soon as I remember it's meant to be artemis, I hate it
I'm still not a fan of the ridiculous number of random lines all over most of his artwork (just look at Amon's arms) and too many new demons are anime waifus (they've always been in SMT, but like half of the new demons were like that in V), but I still think he has more hits than misses and I'm happy to see him heml the franchise if we can't have Kaneko. Better him than whoever the frick is responsible for Asmodeus.
Kazuma Kaneko is in semi-retirement (essentially that corporate Miyamoto sort of retirement where he picks up a paycheck but isn't expected to do any real work) and has been replaced by Masayuki Doi. But Atlus wasn't sure that Doi would be able to handle designing all the new demons in SMTIV by himself on his first outing, so they brought in a bunch of freelancers as guest artists.
Despite some issues with the way Doi designs demons, outside of a couple of new guest designs like Minotaur and Yaso Magatsuhi, Doi is miles ahead of everyone they got to do guest work and became a permanent fixture starting with SMTIV: Apocalypse. If one were interested in conspiracy theories, one might suspect that Atlus intentionally chose artists that didn't fit with SMT's aesthetic specifically so that Doi's designs would end up looking much better by comparison. That way there wouldn't be as much outcry over him taking over Kaneko's position. But that's none of my business.
Supposedly he supervises the 3D modeling process to make sure the models are consistent with his artwork. Which makes sense- all that you used to get for concept art back in the day was one static image. If the guy who drew it isn't there, how the hell is anyone supposed to know what Vishnu's back is supposed to look like?
I would love to see another SMT like the first one. Where the first half plays out almost like a modern Persona game. Then the Nukes start flying and it timeskips you to the post apocalypse.
You know for the longest time I thought Kaneko and Araki were the same person going under a pen name
No, actually. He didn't actually began with Megami Tensei 1 proper, he joined for Megami Tensei 2, which is still fairly early in the series.
Kaneko himself is a very "embrace change" kinds guy. He said in an interview around P3 that he'd rather have his hands off so new people can take over as main artists, directors and leaders so the series doesn't grow stale.
SMT began as the series that did things different from other jrpgs. However the series has gone for way too long now. It went from being a breath of fresh air to a expected tradition. It's hardcore fans have become old people, and old people hate change.
But I like that despite that, SMTV managed to be a kettlepot of ideas and new concepts the series hasn't seen yet. I just wish it didn't try to be Nocturne 2 and instead hinged more on its own ideas.
Doi has been with Atlus for a long time, he wasn't a new guy he worked since Persona 2 EP back in 1999 and also worked on other series like Trauma Center.
They brought the guest artist becase SMT IV was released for the 20th anniversary and they wanted to celebrate using guest artist who worked designing monsters who inspired the series.
SMT 4 had guest artists and a new artist on it. the demon designs on it are divisive to most but i personally like most of them. the divinities are my personaly favorite. michizane is fricking sick
I would love to see another SMT like the first one. Where the first half plays out almost like a modern Persona game. Then the Nukes start flying and it timeskips you to the post apocalypse.
Play redux. You can ignore the whole WoG shit and focus on the main mission.
Here is what I recommend: play the first time on normal following the main sectors. Then if you feel you want more to the lore play the NG plus to: 1 there are frick tons of NG+ exclusives sections, demons and missions 2 this time go through the WoG in parallel with main mission 3 go for the same aliment or change it
Choose whatever difficulty you want, unless if you are crazy and pick the Impossible difficulty.
I suggested to see the OG ending first then the "new" ending to have a better context. Also NG+ iirc the level limit can be removed, meaning you can summon Shiva from the first minute and explore everything with ease. However this cannot be done in Impossible, this difficulty will rape your ass alongside especially with all NG+ bullshit. So if you really want a challenge go for it.

You can still get the normal endings if you tell yukiko to frick off after beating mem aleph, which everyone should do at least once because it's a cool fight
Knowing Jimenez's personality how they hell would someone like that stand being in a military for five minutes without finding a way to be discharged. Hell how the hell would he make it past basic training?
Anyone a combat role will eventually go to two extremes just through all the shit they have to go through. They either gradually hate the military and all that it represents because they feel like pawns (which they kind of are) sent off to kill without anyone giving a shit if they come back alive or they let the job consume them in the opposite way and become mindless boot lickers.
atlus said it did better than expectations and the studio acknowledged that it's the most successful project they did and should arrange their future plans to do more games like it >why no port
it's probably a part of the anniversary plans or they are planning to just make the full version multiplat
the did it specifically to dab on Gankerermin who spent the entire release window talking shit about how it was 100% getting ported to everything because the nvidia leak said so
4 is by far the sloppiest SMT game I've played. Even Soul Hackers feels AAA in comparison. How did they get there from Strange Journey is beyond me. What surprises me the most is how many anons swear by it.
Strange Journey is shit that's why, imagine making a SMT game with a mediocre soundtrack, SMT IV is elder god tier compared to it for that reason alone.
hold on are SJ's boring orchestral arrangements considered a positive? It's pretty much the one thing that stops it from being the best of the series. It's so lame.
Kaneko only did the story scenario for 4 before pushing the button on the yamato perpetual reactor irl. Most of (all?) of the new demon designs in 4 were done by guest artists. Doi officially became the main artist in 4A which is why you'll find more aesthetic cohesion in the new designs in that game and demons like Medusa there becoming more 'frickable' (proper industry jargon)
you can buy it for $15 outside of steam during the big sales, that's what I did and honestly I think it's the definitive version of playing nocturne once you install the mods that fix the framerate, internal resolution, cutscenes and soundtrack. the sole fact that it let's you choose which skills you want a fused demon to inherit makes it better than og nocturne.
Yeah they wanted to go the guest artist route, the way trading cards and gachas do it. Didn't really work out because because you're essentially redrawing/redesigning the whole deck and people are going to have problems with that. Should've been a whole new roster if they wanted to commit to that.
>Did the usual SMT artist die while making 4?
Funny thing about that. The guest artist who did Medusa, Yasushi Nirasawa actually died a couple of years ago.
new SMT but with Tatsuki Fujimoto as writer and art director. this is how we save the series..
frick doi and his bland, garish ass shit. can't believe people here unironically like beano's look.
No frick you, you won anyways so why do you care, enjoy your anime LN characters as demons
At least his girls are frickable but they are not demon material
lol at his zeus
I think most of them suck, but they aren't as big a deal as they're made out to be. Doi's redesigns make them a lot better, and he is a fine replacement for Kaneko even though I do prefer Kaneko overall. However Kaneko whiners are some of the b***hiest people I have ever seen on the the internet and they need to get over the fact that the man simply doesn't want to draw anymore.
>doesn't want to draw anymore.
Did he say as much?
Not that I think he has too, there are so many demon designs they only used like once and never again, they could just use his designs forever
Where is my fricking car atlus
SMTIV was developer around an anniversary benchmark, so to celebrate they used artists that had worked on Tokusatsu costumes for monsters. The artbook notes that everyone on the team was gushing like fangirls for the privilege of working with them.
I think the archangels are by far the worst ones. The classic archangels are iconic designs, these guys are edgy for no reason. Also they have the gall to put them on the cover and make them prominent story demons but restrict them all to a day one DLC, no dignity.
>Kaneko doesn't want to draw!!!11
lies. Kaneko is getting the Kojima treatment. he's cooped up in a janitor closet with barely enough room for his desk and he's laden with pointless busy work or no work at all every day
that's the only flaw of smt 4, that they didn't use kaneko's art for all of the demons and instead decided to hire some hack artists, the angels look fricking horrible in this game like look at this shit
And the gameplay being completely broken. And all the demons being mechanically designed identically. And the story falling apart in the third act and only using half the script. And the Neutral ending. And gating major characters in the main story like the archangels behind paid day 1 DLC. But other than that it's perfect.
People meme constantly about SJ difficulty but how hard is it really? From every SMT game I've played smt3 hardtype hack is easily the most ball busting experience.
It's not that hard, it's about par with classic Nocturne and V. It has difficulty spikes (like every SMT game) and some areas that are hard to navigate (like evey SMT game).
If you're the kind of person that could tolerate 4 on apocalypse on your first run then I guess there's nothing redux could do worse, but I just can't imagine enjoying either of those experiences,
Yeah, Atlus took control of all of his work for the company instead of it being shared when he dipped out to do stuff with people at Konami and Capcom.
I dunno man... Not sure why this smt gets praised so much.. gameplay aside the art is an eyesore. Looks like the Chinese made it.
Smt become popular because of weebs and smt online.
I didn't mind it. The other shit does look better though that's true
it's a guest artist, get ready for more

Medusa looks a lot better in 4A, but then you have to play 4A.
No question
>No, he wrote an extremely detailed plot for 4 which got cut up and stapled together
Wtf that must suck ass. Why?
Because Atlus was in the middle of dying again as their parent corporation index kicked the bucket, I think this affected development heavily
More accurately
>From 2010 to 2013, Atlus, as a company, ceased to exist and its name became a brand of Index Corporation

You people have serious shit taste
They look like complete garbage compared to the originals. An insult to life itself.
SMT4 got an artist I can only describe as Japan's Todd McFarlane. Later games went back to a more standard SMT look.
You haven't seen the actually awful stuff yet.
she got better
For some reason they went with the guess artists meme hard on IV.
Don't worry, the art gets fixed on IVA.
Doi art is so souless man
Would you rather Yasuda take over on the main line?
desu2's writing is total garbage but yasuda loves breasts so much, you can feel it in his art, I stop caring about how dumb the plot is as a result
Isnt there a concept art page of Yasuda where every drawing of a woman has some annotation about the design of the breasts?
Soul.
I only like yasuda digimon designs
God yes please, I get more Yasuda kino and Kanekogays would finally neck themselves for good.
probably not, but it won't stop me from loving Io
Yasuda is insanely based. I have nutted to Fumi here so many times.

The frick??? Took me 5 trials to realize this shit. Did other SMT game did that?
Yeah its surprisingly common for smt games to have bosses in the late game resist almighty
I should also expand, magic isn't a useless stat for you. It affects your defense against enemy magic, and slightly increases your success in negotiations.
You don't, howevef items like Stones go off your mag. Use status effect rounds if you want your MC to be MVP, though.
You get Rock Bullet fairly early and that's an instant kill on most non-boss enemies that don't null gun.
MAG provides magic defense, MP, and works with elemental stones. Luck is actually the best stat (in Deep).
Do elemental gun attacks scale off MAG or STR? Can never remember
In SJ? All of the MC moves rely on Strength, including the elemental and Almighty gun moves. That goes for both OG and Deep.
His guns are really good, he is not solely dispensing items
Medusa among others came out of a collaboration with some Kamen Rider artist or something

Just out of curiosity how well did Shin Megami Tensei V do? I'm honestly surprised Atlus hasn't ported it to everything else like they did Persona 5.
It's the best selling SMT game to date and has done over a million sales as of last year.
Kinda sad how that's nothing when compared to Persona, but what can you do

the did it specifically to dab on Gankerermin who spent the entire release window talking shit about how it was 100% getting ported to everything because the nvidia leak said so
and then all the people on pc with an interest just emulated it instead
oops
cope
The guest artist did a better job than Doi
4 is by far the sloppiest SMT game I've played. Even Soul Hackers feels AAA in comparison. How did they get there from Strange Journey is beyond me. What surprises me the most is how many anons swear by it.
Strange Journey is shit that's why, imagine making a SMT game with a mediocre soundtrack, SMT IV is elder god tier compared to it for that reason alone.
Are you high? SJ's soundtrack is original at least. SMT4's soundtrack is just a shitty remix of previous titles' soundtracks.
hold on are SJ's boring orchestral arrangements considered a positive? It's pretty much the one thing that stops it from being the best of the series. It's so lame.
Kaneko only did the story scenario for 4 before pushing the button on the yamato perpetual reactor irl. Most of (all?) of the new demon designs in 4 were done by guest artists. Doi officially became the main artist in 4A which is why you'll find more aesthetic cohesion in the new designs in that game and demons like Medusa there becoming more 'frickable' (proper industry jargon)
>MUH SJ
>MUH SH
>MUH 4
All asset flip slops.
SMT was a big asset flop since the beginning, anon
>lost the will to touch the franchise after I got stuck in Majin tensei last year
Oh woe, it's me
Marsh, is that you?
Who
The peak of SMT art was Nocturne
>jean girl
>peak
should I buy a copy of shin megami tensei III nocturne on steam and support atlus or should I just emulate it
>50 + dlc for a basic ass port that didn't even fix the fricking soundtrack
Shameless cashgrab
woah never mind frick that shit
you mean physical?
BUY IT. In a bunch of years your PS4/switch copy will be a collectors item
you mean digital?
frick steam, emulate it
you can buy it for $15 outside of steam during the big sales, that's what I did and honestly I think it's the definitive version of playing nocturne once you install the mods that fix the framerate, internal resolution, cutscenes and soundtrack. the sole fact that it let's you choose which skills you want a fused demon to inherit makes it better than og nocturne.
Yeah they wanted to go the guest artist route, the way trading cards and gachas do it. Didn't really work out because because you're essentially redrawing/redesigning the whole deck and people are going to have problems with that. Should've been a whole new roster if they wanted to commit to that.
Post the monkey girl.
No please, I don't want SMT to turn into ironic weeb trash
New SMT/Persona/tbh game when? I need moar.
I hope you liked p5 because it's essentially the bible for all future projects cooking up at Atlus™
>I hope you liked p5
Yeah, Sega is a fricking disease. Atlus should move from this cancer.
This is being made by the Persona 3-5 guys so of course it's going to be similar
Funnily enough Persona itself is getting a new director and team so it's probably going to be significantly different
I feel like the success of P5 will force the new team to just stick to what worked mostly, instead of reinventing itself like 3 did.
I'm hoping it won't because everyone is expecting a change in direction but we'll see in liek 5 years
You do know that Re: Fantasy is made by Studio Zero right.
He had an allergic reaction to flowers and died
I can never replay SMT4A because of that goddamn shesha Flynn jumpscare
Who designed Cleopatra? Is it Kaneko or literalwho?
It's Doi. Every new demon IVA, SJR and V is Doi.
I loved the 4 extra artist designs
They're garish.
I wouldnt want all demons to look like them but I really think they fit well in the series
Infinitely better than Doi trash thats for sure
Frick off, Doi demon designs actually look like SMT characters and has some of the best designs. The guest characters are pure cancer
No frick you, you won anyways so why do you care, enjoy your anime LN characters as demons
At least his girls are frickable but they are not demon material
lol at his zeus
Zeus would be a bad design except he has fantastic animation that really make the statue-esque design work
I think most of them suck, but they aren't as big a deal as they're made out to be.
I liked the archangels new looks a lot
>le biblically accurate angels
I think the archangels are by far the worst ones. The classic archangels are iconic designs, these guys are edgy for no reason. Also they have the gall to put them on the cover and make them prominent story demons but restrict them all to a day one DLC, no dignity.
I dont like them because they are "biblically accurate", which they arent anyways by the way, I just think they look rad
The original ones super generic, though. Same with the version of Odin they pick up the most.
The archangels, Lilith, and Meekabah are easily the best of IVs guest design, hands down.
>le biblically accurate angels
that's just typical kamen rider designs homie
Artist made some pretty cool monsters, that particular one just wasn't one of them.
>What the frick is this? At
It looks good. No?
No
>Kaneko doesn't want to draw!!!11
lies. Kaneko is getting the Kojima treatment. he's cooped up in a janitor closet with barely enough room for his desk and he's laden with pointless busy work or no work at all every day
Doi is a really good designer, the problem is that he has to fill in for Kaneko.
that's the only flaw of smt 4, that they didn't use kaneko's art for all of the demons and instead decided to hire some hack artists, the angels look fricking horrible in this game like look at this shit
Is there any reason why I shouldn't start with impossible difficulty if I have experience on max difficulty in other SMT titles?
I mean you could try and see for yourself
If you're the kind of person that could tolerate 4 on apocalypse on your first run then I guess there's nothing redux could do worse, but I just can't imagine enjoying either of those experiences,
You don't get impossible till NG+
No, he's alive. The irony is the artist who did that design died. I actually like his non-human monsters. RIP.
Yeah, Atlus took control of all of his work for the company instead of it being shared when he dipped out to do stuff with people at Konami and Capcom.
Didn't they go on to make some other game that was like not-smt? What even was that called?
