I would say it ruined many other games as well because of the affect it had on developers who saw wows success being due to how casualized it was. the message was casualize your game as much a possible to reach a wider audience for mass success.

Considering the MMO market prior to WoW's launch was full of hyper no life games with extremely punishing rules for death. Yeah, it was for the best that it "casualized" the genre a bit. MMO's were absolute dogshit and hardly anyone played them but the most hardcore neckbeards. The damage WoW caused was after its success starting with Wrath. This where they killed the industry but not when it originally launched.
FFXI is still the better game. World of Warcraft was great, but being able to level from 1-60 alone was a horrible, horrible mistake. Forcing people to play together to be efficient made for much better gameplay.

Did you play the game back when it originally launched? Because I played with people constantly. For group quests, for dungeons, to frick around and gank alliance in TM. It was a different time back then and while there were a lot of buttholes you could find some like minded people that wanted to quest together. You could also mostly hit 60 alone but I like the fact that it was an option. I played FFXI, albeit no where near as much as WoW and it was a better game than 14 but I still felt more at home with WoW.
I'm not saying you are wrong btw. I just appreciate that WoW was different in that regard and I think the experience really depends on when you played it. I don't think WoW Classic comes even close to reliving those days.

This explains the negative effect WoW had on the MMO genre and why the genre was so good before WoW came along. The games were made for people who wanted to be there, people who enjoyed those specific elements. Once WoW came along the genre became something aimed at the masses, normal people, people who enjoy playing for 40 minutes a day and want all of it to be auto queue content as they afk in town.
If you want to dig deeper you can go to the root of the problem, Warcraft 1. Not only did that eventually lead to WoW but it also spawned the MOBA style of game that went on to help ruin gaming.

i played casually with some high school frens and saw molten core and blackwing lair a few times but that was all

the story was nonsensical with retcons up the ass the gameplay was fairly boring
the music, the exploration of the world and hanging out with your buddies were the only things keeping this shit from dying

WoW was the MMO world of their RTS games. It's in the name, it's literally the WORLD of Warcraft. At least more than a few of the original devs were also clearly fan of traditional tabletop RPGs and wanted a game that felt like an adventure to play through.
Classic wow was just a polished mmo, it's tbc and on that the rot started to seep.
