Did you guys ever play heavily customized maps for RTS games, ones that made unique use of map triggers?

Yeah I remember playing Final Fantasy and Dragon Ball Z custom maps in Starcraft in the early 00s. Very fun.

I spent thousands of hours as a nolife teenager on WC3 custom games.

Hell yeah. LOTR, protect the president, AoS, special forces were all fond memories from starcraft BW custom games.

WC3 was even better with crazy custom games. I remember there being maps with full on MMO like raid fights like impossible bosses or the open RPG games.

Being able to "save" and "load" a character on those mmo maps using chat commands felt so incredibly cool.

My favorite UMS maps were The Thing and one called Normandy Invasion where you just spend hours and hours clearing out a map of enemies.

Favorite old UMS Brood War maps were Dark Archon Utter Madness and Smash T.V. Brood War. They were both poorly balanced and broken, but they were fun. Smash T.V. Brood War was a pretty good translation of Smash T.V. into Brood War, and being able to customize your party with the earned points was neat. Dark Archon was just a constant flood of units where macro and positioning was everything.
Modern maps like Poker Defense are a lot better, but I still kinda miss the old janky stuff.

Did a lot of that in HoMM which isn't an RTS but whatever. In fact I made a lot of my own, I was making up stories for my own amusement and making maps based on them.

I downloaded a ton of RPG maps for HoMM 2 in the early 2000s from Astral Wizard. Some were really good.

Later I tried some WC3 RPG maps with friends as we all liked the Warchasers scenario. Then they moved on to WoW.

I loved that one yugioh defense map where you combined units to make more powerful units.

I was never really good at competitive Starcraft so I spent most of my time playing comp stomps or UMS games. I remember playing Aeon Of Strife a lot (precursor to DOTA) plus tons of RPGs and madness games.
I remember downloading a DBZ RPG and painstakingly adding a .wav file of Vegeta quipping to one of the triggers and it made the map take over twice as long to download.

I re-play The Flame Knives (for Brood War) every other year, it's insanely hard and addictive, plus the anime storyline is fun

I did, usually tower/bunker defence style maps as a fun little distraction.
Then I realised Starcraft is a game with an intentionally shitty UI and I moved on to games that didn't feel like a chore to play.

I used to play DOTA, tower defenses, and other custom WC3 scenario maps back in the mid-to-late 2000s. DoTA was already a popular WC3 map then, but I never would've dreamed that it would become its own game.

Anyone know any good single player rpg maps for warcraft 2/3, starcraft or aoe 1 or 2?

Labyrinthos RPG is still one of the best game I've played all things considered, and it's a friggin BW custom map. I've had more enjoyment and hours just on this map than a lot of real games. Took years to make, lots of testing.

There used to be a website for it but it's down now. It talked about why the creator made the game, and how it related to his psychology major (he would host the map, sit there and study people's behavior). Definitely the highest effort custom map I've played.

Still out there on staredit if anyone wants to play, but it's definitely more fun with 2-3 people.

my favorite was Naruto Beginnings, there were secret characters you could play as if you paid attention and someone more experienced informed you of them. The original version just had Gaara, but the BroodWar version also had characters like Itachi which was obviously OP. his signature move was to teleport an enemy into a ring surrounded by turrets for five seconds to get bombarded by attacks before being warped back to where they came from.
