Dude, you REALLY don't seem to grasp just how much Nintendo despises doing summer Directs. Turns out E3 was literally the only thing that made Nintendo get the frick up out of bed during the summer, at least for the past several years. I bet they're also getting the wheels turning on phasing out either the winter or fall general Direct too at this rate.

It's very obvious the Switch is unwinding at this point. Aside from some DLCs, the only first party game still on the docket is Pikmin. And that comes out next month.

            Anonymous

That's essentially what the original plan supposedly was, that it'd be bundled into NSO. TotK has emboldened Nintendo too much, I'm really hoping it bites them in the ass with their next system. Only reason I have hope for this happening at all is because Furukawa is untested when it comes to propping up a platform without significant legwork being done for him beforehand.

Unwinding in the sense that they have no major plans sure but it's still far too early for a new console even for nintendo, they'll be content to let the switch drag along for at least 2-3 more years with minimal first party releases as they've done it the past when things get slow

            >it's still far too early for a new console even for nintendo
We're in year fricking seven of the Switch. That's far from early.

Nintendo has never had two consoles of equal success launch right after each other, literally never so they're worried yes. But the Wii was a watershed moment for them, plus Switch in 2023 isn't doing nearly as bad as Wii in 2011.

                Anonymous

I also have to add that people truly underestimate how arrogant Wii era Nintendo was. Even in the Switch era they always speak of the future and making sure things are stable, people like Iwata were told numerous times by numerous people the Wii money would not last and were ignored. They ignored the shovel ware problem, ignored the lack of serious Western support, ignored the lack of popularity in Japan, ignored the rise of smartphones taking away their whole market, ignored NoA scheduling things poorly, and ignored the general perception of the system as a fad. 2006-2008 was the time Wii actually did well, the last four years of its life were painful.

                Anonymous

But new first-party software is drying up badly, and even they and their partner devs have clearly started to hit a wall with the Switch's hardware for the past few years. Trying to stretch the Switch out much more when it's already been stretched wafer-thin is not going to help their next system.

                Anonymous

I've always made the argument that it isn't really hardware that will bite them, but software. So many Switch games are years old and still selling which while good overall, does not generate public perception of new and exciting things. I mean, look at that tour Nintendo is doing. What are they showing mostly? Games from years and years ago. It does not build consumer confidence.

He also would not have let Pokemon SwSh release the way it did, at least not without something to make up for it after (like a substantial partial voucher for the DLC). I pick that game out in particular because I really think that was a lightbulb moment for Furukawa-era Nintendo, where that fat-faced yellow israelite saw just what an atrocious amount of laziness/incompetence and deception that Game Freak completely got away with for a cornerstone Nintendo-published release, and started taking notes.

I've always made the argument that it isn't really hardware that will bite them, but software. So many Switch games are years old and still selling which while good overall, does not generate public perception of new and exciting things. I mean, look at that tour Nintendo is doing. This is a good point. They've also potentially painted themselves in a corner with how severely they've leaned on ports for the Switch. They won't have the same benefit of mass-ignorance for Switch ports on Switch 2 that they exploited for WiiU ports and portquels on Switch.

What makes Odyssey disgusting isn't just how they opted to not follow it up (though still moronic with how well both it and the Switch sold), but how they left just about everything from the game to rot that wasn't related to Classic Donkey Kong (even though that was just one part of a larger game).

3D Mario games usually don't sell 20+ million copies. Completely neglecting that momentum (to the point where Odyssey's "sister" Zelda game, BotW, has overtaken it) is a fantastically complacent and moronic move for their biggest self-made IP. Though then again it somehow took them 6 years to make a BotW sequel in the same world on the same hardware with the same assets and fidelity. Shit, an SMO sequel would probably be a herculean decade+ effort in that light.
