Me and my irl friends use steam chat. We have a discord server we just don't use it, text messages into group steam chat is how we do it. The discord was for dnd with others but we aren't doing that right now.

I don't have friends BECAUSE I don't want to talk to anyone. I've been using Steam for like 12 years and I have ZERO friends on there. In fact, no one in my life except my mother even knows I play videogames. If someone wants to talk about games IRL I just tell them I never played them and I think they're childish.

I played Season of Mastery in WoW and this all dwarf guild wanted me to keep joining Discord, it actually became annoying, I think I was asked almost twenty different times to join and I just ignored it, kind of gives me anxiety just thinking about it

I can still find fixes and patches and mods hosted for ancient content on ancient forums like Sorcerers Place. Everything on Discord goes poof whenever the admin deletes everything after getting mad that he got catfished or something. Geocities archives still exist. There will be no "Discord archives" because it is corporate proprietary content according to their TOS.

Please explain the appeal of Discord to me. From what I can tell it's a chatroom where you can't even have one-on-one conversations with people (unlike here) because the messages scroll by so fast. And unlike here, people don't start at the top and read their way down, they just jump in at the bottom so most messages will never be replied to. How is that appealing?

Discord servers are basically just self contained imageboards. You also have voice channels and you can use discord for 1-to-1 or private group calls if you want. Most people use it because it's basically skype + text with more options, low impact, low performance etc. Also it's apparently owned by the CIA/farming data. It's useful for guilds, coomers and people that want to jerk off in chat together if not socialize.

Mumble latency is all up to the server location, but at least you have vastly more options for that than Discord's bloated ass.
Of course, but assuming both are hosted on the same server (they won't be of course since you can't self-host Discord), and discarding the delay caused by travel time, Mumble has lower delay, about 15-20% lower IIRC. It might have improved further and Discord could easily have gotten worse. Discord also had comically high variance on the delay as well, far higher than any of the alternatives at the time (Skype, TS3, Ventrillo, pre-Discord aping Steam chat.)
It's just funny to me when people force Discord usage for "serious" things like pugging or online tourneys.

At least in the 2000s, the expectation was you got on voice when doing big-group shit to better coordinate (eg. everyone shuts up that's not leading the run). People rarely hung out in them for the casual chitchat, that was always ingame text.

Convenience I suppose. It's one app for checking tech for my Granblue main (Search function could see some improvement, relies too much on pinned messages for history), keeping track of guild chat/activities, instant messaging friends, finding latest lewds from cosplay bawds I don't want to follow on Twitter but still want to see actual relevant content from occasionally, notifications when important things happen (though to be fair @everyone is more often used for irrelevant shit on bigger servers sadly), voice chat for all these things when needed.

The expansion of 3rd party communication tools unironically helped with the decline of MMOs.
A huge part of the appeal of MMOs in the golden era was that it gave you a central place to communicate with a bunch of other people, and objectives/somethings to do to give reason for you to gather in the first place.
Nowadays people form bubbles on Twitter, jump on Discord, and go to all the other social media hubs. So now the only real reason to mess with MMOs is specifically because you enjoy the gameplay and want to play with other people, because the novelty of communication is no longer really a selling point.

Discord did nothing wrong, before Discord people where already gravitating to Ventrilo, no matter which voice program won the race you would still be in stuck in the same situation your in now. People adapted, you didnt.
Most people didn't want to pay for a voice-chat server. Discord just normalized it by being 'free', and simple to use. It also happened to do a far better job than Skype.

wow made LFG which killed looking for groups in chat, it was supposed to make it easier, but pugging sucks so now u need to be on cord to find friends to play with.

I remember when I played SwgEmu, I saw all of the discord guilds speeding to the end. I saw the entertainers camping the front of the cantina instead of performing by the tables. There was no point. What sort of world would I find at the end of my grind? Nothing worth grinding for.

I've learned from experience that you should never join discord with random people, it's so fricking uncomfortable and people talk WAY to much just to fill the air

I'll join a discord but only if the guild gives me a good reason to, such as scheduling shit due to timezones or a guild turning into a general gaming one due to an mmo hitting EoS.

Most of the discords I've entered were good as a result of that. I haven't really seen these normie horror stories that some anons are talking about where the discords are 80% people that aren't even playing the game with nsfw channels and other shit.
somewhere along the line people got mixed up and don't understand what the social aspect of mmos was supposed to be. it's not sitting in chat talking about nothing to fill the gap in your life it's about coming together to solve problems or creatively causing problems for others. of course modern mmos don't really allow this anymore so you can't blame the people who don't know any better

Back when Guild Wars 2 launched and we had the Ganker guild in Mumble, that server was more well behaved than anything else I have ever encountered since on Discord.

I hate it too but social media in general killed in-game chats. Discord is just the popular one right now. Before it was skype, before it was MSN chat, before it was vent/ts/mumble, before it was shitty forums/zboards, before it was IRC.
There's always been something to incentivize people to interact outside of the game, and that's why games stopped really being about interacting very early on, and they had to change to appeal to normalgays. I use Discord, but it occurred to me that no video game environment has ever been improved by it. All the soulfulness of gaming has been through forums or other memes. Discord always feels depressing, even if it's an active server.
