      Have you played Soulstorm?

my favorite game is Munch's Oddyssey. I know everyone else hates it, but I just really enjoy all aspects of it. I haven't managed to find a game quite like it yet.

Munch's Oddysey is good, but goofy compared to the first two games and Stranger's Wrath

        >Munch's Oddysey is good, but goofy compared to the first two
For the better, honestly, but if you're the kind of person who genuinely enjoys grim dark stories then play Soulstorm. It was tailor made for you.

        >Have you played Soulstorm?
I've been meaning to, the enhanced edition came out in the meantime too, should I spring for that instead? I have the original on my hdd.

        >Munch's Oddysey is good, but goofy compared to the first two games and Stranger's Wrath
it had a joke cutscene I loved when I was younger. they push Abe in without a second thought, and then they decide that it's too scary for themselves, if I remember correctly.

also when the heart beat monitor messes up, and Munch freaks out, until the doctor hits the monitor again and carries on.

I really liked the blend of gameplay genres, exploring and adventuing around, collecting spooceshrubs, and guiding followers around, upgrading them to one of two classes, switching between two characters,

there was a lot of game there to like. I am a huge fan of genre shakeups in games. if a big RPG has a collectible card game, or you can drop by a tavern and play coin golf, or blackjack, I am all over that type of content. I am a simple gamer, I want more games inside my games.

I own Oddworld MO on Xbox, the disc is probably beat up, but I also own it on Vita, and have a copy on PC for good measure. I also own Stranger's Wrath on Vita for good measure.

Oddysee is proof you can have a social or political message in a video game without being an insufferable c**t about it.

        >What message?
That factory farms not only treats its workers like slaves, they can lead to the death of entire specious. In universe Rupturefarms killed off meeches by over farming them and mudokkans are very obviously a slave class in oddworld.

my favorite game of all time, although depending on the day it's sometimes SotC
I love basically everything about it and it's the measuring stick that I use to compare most other games to in terms of quality
the closer to Oddworld it is, the more likely it is I'm going to enjoy it. it really shaped my taste for aesthetic, music and even game design
it's the perfect storm of exceptionally talented devs and a visionary game designer with fiery passion. I long for games with such an imaginative world to absorb, but unfortunately I've yet to find anything on quite the same level
at the time, Lorne really did believe in his heart that he was set to become the next George Lucas and build the next Star Wars level IP with Oddworld, he was dead set on that vision and he and the team poured their heart into it

would recommend this site for anyone that wants to do a deep dive on concept art and everything like interviews (worth watching, Lorne's passion back then was blazing and really inspiring to watch). first 3 pages of the Oddysee concept art are level layouts but it goes to actual art after that. best way to save images is with the download button at the top right for best resolution:

also since Anon just deleted a post that said Exoddus is better, here's my thoughts on that:
Exoddus is a good game, but the original is laser focused and has perfect pacing and tone
the problems with Exoddus are that it drags on way too much, it reuses the Scrabania and Paramonia temples with the Mudomo and Mudanchee vaults (Lorne even said this was because they had to reuse assets, wasn't a part of the original vision), the humor goes a bit too far into slapstick goofball territory with the Magog on the March and possessing farts, the Mudokon personalities really don't add much to gameplay and managing them via slapfights is pretty stupid, being able to possess every single creature takes away the predator & prey dynamic, the story isn't as good and manual saving can make the game a real pain if you save in a bad spot
the 'all o' ya!' feature is great, the roller thing is fun to use, visually it's fantastic and the soundtrack is great, but to me the original has it beat
there's an old image macro floating about that said Exoddus is 'twice the game but half the heart' and Lorne agreed with that assessment, as do I

just so I don't seem like an Oddysee cultist though, some problems I have with it:
        >scrolling control tutorial signs break the fourth wall
        >firefly hints are a tad better, but still break the fourth wall
        >no in-game explanation for Abe being able to chant and possess Sligs, seems like a late addition that they couldn't weave into the story
        >throwing objects into off-screen rooms is unintuitive and silly

I deleted it because I uploaded the wrong picture. The PC PAL cover looks worse than the PS1 version, it makes the hand holding the bottle look it is floating in mid air instead of being attached to Abe.

The reason I enjoy Exoddus more than Oddysee is also why I can't stand the remake. They leaned more into the grim dark stuff when the appeal of the originals was that the morality tale took a backseat to player enjoyment. It was nice to see they backed further away from it in Exoddus, too. Fast forward to Soulstorm and every cutscene is bleak and miserable. In the scene where the blind mudokkan dies Abe is practically weeping over his corpse. This does not work in a game where me turning a Slig into flying mince is played for laughs. Sorry Lorne, your over correction didn't fix anything, you arguably made it worse, but hey, credit where credit is due for disowning New N' Tasty.

The fact that this franchise got very successful out of nowhere it's surprising.
Frick, even i remember one of the GTI execs tried to sabotage the development of Oddysey

What was the issue? I will admit that alot of games I played was enjoyed because I was a child at the time but this one I feel I would of enjoyed if i found it now.

I mean I haven't played it since I was maybe 11 or 12 but I hated the look, feel and just everything about it. I was repulsed by it. Might feel differently today but it's not a high priority for me to replay it

I personally loved the look. It was grimey, I hate to sound like a homosexual but it seemed kinda psychedlic too.

Best cinematic platform game. Playing Prince of Persia and Heart of Darkness after Oddworld ruined my experience with those other games.
I still think it would’ve been better as a movie though. The difficulty is just plain insane for a video game and I’d hate to see such a wonderfully crafted world go by the wayside by more casual players.

All I want to do is discuss Oddworld but no-one on /vr/ seems to play it. Oddysee is one of the finest games ever made, Exoddus improves the gameplay in almost every way but it doesn't need to be as long as it is

I played the demo on Demo One more times as a kid than I could possibly guess, and finally completed the actual game last year. What a fantastic fricking game, the atmosphere is completely unrivalled. I genuinely believe it's impossible to capture the tone of Oddyssey in 3D, nothing else has ever come close. Shame Oddworld as a series never did either.

I wish someone would make a Big Box theme using the music and sound effects from those demo discs. Specifically versions 4 and 5 with the purple and red sleeves.

Same, that's how I ended up with the game. I also remember being so confused by Kurushi, no idea what was going on

Glad to see I'm not the only one being confused by Kurushi. Still have no idea what this game is, it's a bit fascinating in itself.

Being exposed to Oddworld Oddyssee and Exoddus as a kid actually forged a part of my tastes in aesthetic (in art) and gameplay (in video game). Would probably not have gotten into Beksinski, Dali and Giger without it. This game was deeply inspirational.

      It's a trilogy. The retro Oddworld games are: Abe's Oddysee + Abe's Exoddus (PC/PS1)
      Munch's Oddysee (Original Xbox/PC)
and there's also a spin off title called Stranger's Wrath on Original Xbox and PC

Yes, it even wasn't in the remake.
They just left it as an offscreen character

I had a real surface-level enjoyment of this game as a kid. Never found any of the secret areas in Zulag 1, never knew you could blow up chant suppressors with grenades, never figured out you could command slogs with sligs, etc

  18. 10 months ago

I saved them all in both games but I don't think I could do it again.
I tried the remake but got stuck in the very first secret area, I cannot forgot that one.
