The controls are not the problem. The game speed is terrible. I’m not talking about actual FPS, I’m talking about in game speed which is a setting in Brood War (slow/fastest). The slider does nothing in game for the N64.
So I grew up with Brood War on my Win98 machine, and actually bought this game as a novelty off a friend around 2001 or so. It was neat to see it on the 64 but it’s just a lackluster experience if you’ve played the real thing.
Also, the real draw of Brood War was playing 8 man Big Game Hunters or UMS with friends. Can’t play “Dodge the Rapist” or “Sponge Bob RPG 2000” on N64. There’s obviously no 1v1 ladder which is what actual competitive people played. All in all, the game is just a novelty.
So its too slow? Obviously RTS enthusiasts would play on the PC, most people playing the N64 version would be children or noobs so it would work fine as a starting point to the genre right?

But yeah, it still allows you to play in 4:3 with original chunky gfx on a crt. You can also turn off the "real-time" lighting" and it looks fine except for the portraits in HD mode.
Also, it allows you to play the game in a bunch of languages which is great. The french SCVs sound hilarious. You're just mad for absolutely no reason. I guess some pros still play the game in 4:3 but remastered is fine.

I'm replaying Warcraft 3, and I got to one mission I was having a ton of trouble on and just couldn't figure out, so I looked to see if there was some obvious strategy I wasn't doing. Every fricking video is reforged. Fricking reforged gives you 10 extra supply, the maps are different, and easier. Completely worthless because it is essentially a different, shittier game. Got by eventually and I guess that's good that I had to come up with my own solution, but seriously, frick "remasters".
diablo 2 resurrected is easier, too. nobody will admit it but i have them installed and ran them side by side and resurrected is absolutely easier. you get more exp per kill and the enemies have about 25% less life on average. gems and unique drops are way more frequent and the bosses only open with their best attacks before switching to straight melee until they die. they used to spam their bullshit attacks and were an actual challenge to take down.

D2:R will always be easier than D2 on release solely because Duriel isn't instant gibbing people before they render the room.

A game like this will always split people into two camps: Is a game only good if you're playing the best version of it? Or, is it fun to see how a game had to be modified to run on a less capable system?
For instance, I still really enjoy playing Quake 64, but there are folks out there who would see no point. Quake 64 is just a compromised version of Quake. StarCraft 64 is somewhat the same. The only thing I'd add is that it's really comfy playing the single player with the gamepad on a couch. You could probably do this with the Steam Deck or something, but it's currently a hassle. You've got to find a non-gimped version of Starcraft (ie, one that isn't the terrible remastered version) and manually map out all the controls on your own. Just sitting down and playing the 64 one can be pretty fun if all you want to do is blast through single player.
I bought SC64 even though I had it on PC, to be able to play 2-player co-op with one of my friends.
It was nice not having to take turns (he didn't have a pc)
On the other hand, on 2-players you always knew when the computer was coming to attack you because the game would freeze for a second or two, always thought that was pretty funny.

So according to Mark Kern, Nintendo got the FBI involved over this game, because a beta build leaked online, and they were sure it was Blizzard's fault.
A game like this will always split people into two camps: Is a game only good if you're playing the best version of it? Or, is it fun to see how a game had to be modified to run on a less capable system?
For instance, I still really enjoy playing Quake 64, but there are folks out there who would see no point. Quake 64 is just a compromised version of Quake. StarCraft 64 is somewhat the same. The only thing I'd add is that it's really comfy playing the single player with the gamepad on a couch. You could probably do this with the Steam Deck or something, but it's currently a hassle. You've got to find a non-gimped version of Starcraft (ie, one that isn't the terrible remastered version) and manually map out all the controls on your own. Just sitting down and playing the 64 one can be pretty fun if all you want to do is blast through single player.
I bought SC64 even though I had it on PC, to be able to play 2-player co-op with one of my friends.
It was nice not having to take turns (he didn't have a pc)
On the other hand, on 2-players you always knew when the computer was coming to attack you because the game would freeze for a second or two, always thought that was pretty funny.
