Honestly, I gave up midway into D5 and I never bothered with D6 due to 3D and lack of content. D7 seems to be better than D6 but at this point I'm pretty much tired of Disgaea series and would rather try out other NIS games.
IIRC they had the same writer as first Witch and the Hundred Knight (it's also the reason why second Witch game bombed - writer was different yet the gameplay was still rough)

1 is the best when it comes to story and characters, yes. 4 is the better game as a whole though simply because of the QoL stuff. Plot in Disgaea games have been on a downward spiral since the 2nd game.
1 has the best story and characters
5 has the best gameplay and the most content
4 Vita/Complete has the best balance of story, gameplay and content but boy the supporting cast gets dragged down a lot by Fuka's antics
D1's gameplay is definitely more simple, I even did the postgame and it only took me around 80 hours in total from start to finish; 5 took me maybe 140 or so? I definitely took my time with it and technically I could go further but I haven't done any other postgames yet
I started with D1, and the newer games feel a little bloated with gimmick stuff nobody wants (chara world, squads, magichange, etc.).
Try D1 for the core Disgaea experience, and you can move on to later titles if you liked it.
D1 also has the best story, for what it's worth, and all the cameos in later games from earlier games' characters will make more sense if you play them all in order.
The general point of attack when it comes to playing the series is to play them in order of release. That way you get to enjoy new features, rather than working backwards and feeling disappointed when you realize you lose features and QoL improvements. Disgaea 1 as an example, even with all the settings set for max speed, plays extremely slow next to Disgaea 4 and 5 when you max out gameplay speed. There's also certain balance changes made that make things feel more fleshed out, versus 1 where different attacks can scale off different stats you probably don't care to raise on that unit, monsters are near useless by no magichange, fusion, strong abilities, and lack of weapons that use their INT stats, certain classes just being strictly better than others, magic is sometimes randomly bad in story missions for no reason, etc.
It's not the best in every game it appears in, but it can be abused to hilarious affect in certain games to make leveling easier (see: Felynn/Nekomatas in 4 turning into fist weapons, level them significantly by fusing one with Desco and grinding off bonus maps, now use one in combination with any humanoid that has the easily transferable ultimate 3x3 fist move and now anybody can one shot the map for easy power leveling and reincarnation)
5 is by far the best on all points, if you're interested in the story you'll want to start with 1 though (lore and worldbuilding is unironically pretty good all around)
but starting with the later games and trying to go back to the first ones is PAINFUL due to all the QoL and general balance changes

I notice they get a few small points in stats here and there extra and maybe a slightly higher % in equipments or movement , but does it scale as they level up or not?

If your base stat is 10 and you get a 5% of your stat in the last level by level up at level 50 your stat is 114.
If the base is 11 by 50 your stat is 126.
If the base is 16 by 50 your stat is 183.
If you did a weak starting character reincarnating at level 50 to a better base can be a massive improvement even if you end the game at the story boss.

Disgaea PC is the best version overall. It contains all of the content from PS2 and the extra content from the PSP and DS versions.
Original PS2 has the original etna va and invasion from within song but it doesn't allow you to skip/speed up animations which is a killer.
Disgaea Complete ruins the original artstyle and makes some gameplay changes from the original like modernizing it with the cheat shop from later entries.
I liked Zed and I mostly used him in 6 but the fact I never got close to the 200 re-incarnations to take full advantage of his Evilities irked me.
Laharl just getting stats from kills is so much better.

It was a bad game. I occasionally went back to it to get my Disgaea fix, but I always abandoned it very fast.
All mobile games are bad games. The moment paying real world money leads to a tangible benefit the whole system collapses in on itself to serve that one cause.
The only time I've paid any attention to mobile is when they hit my gambling addiction just right and then I wake up, remember where I am and feel disgusting. It was interesting playing the SMT gatcha for the Berserk collab but god did I meet some sad fricking people.

I mean it's not just that the gameplay is boring. It's boring, yeah. The interactions between the mechanics are so shallow and dull that the entire thing literally boils down to two things: turning on auto-battle and waiting. You let the game play itself and you repeat the same fights over and over and over because that's what the events are.
But the writing is just fricking dull too. There is not a single thing in Disgaea RPG that's worth paying attention to. The characters aren't even caricatures of themselves. They all say generic things, respond in generic ways, and the most generic nonsense keeps happening over and over. Every other fricking event is Laharl being turned into a girl again because Girl Laharl is the most popular character by a country mile. It's not interesting, it's not engaging, it's not funny.
I mean look at the XENO stuff. Conceptually, it's interesting, right? But that's all it is. It's conceptually interesting. Nothing interesting is actually DONE with these characters and settings. The most worthwhile element of these characters are their basic character profiles and maybe their designs. That's it. The writers can't write so it all just devolves to the same boring-ass shit.

The game was just far too small and narrow in scope. Maybe they could have done what Fate/Grand Order did. FGO isn't a particularly good game either, but they write overly extravagant stories and events for it and I guess that ends up being its main draw. FGO kinda proves that even with extremely dated gameplay, you can pull a bunch of suckers in with halfway decent writing.
I'm careful. As far I see there is nothing new to the gameplay. As strategy game Disgaea always felt too easy so it kinda gets boring it you don't feel the story.
I think part of the problem for disgaea storywriting wise is that atleast in the past, the more unique stories are seperate rpgs from the disgaea series,and nis just doesnt make one off srpgs anymore

The US demo for 7 is actually nerfed from the JP demo to make it harder to exploit. There's no way to fight strong enemies fast, you can't exploit the hospital gacha higher tiers, etc.

I don't know, maybe it's just I've seen a lot more tedious grinds. Multiple people have grinded to 99 in FF7 before finishing the reactor and the dedication to that still wows me.
A lot of people liked Disgaea 5 at the time mechanically, the plot just sucked.
We just didn't know at the time it would take NIS 7 fricking years to take another step forward mechanically.
There's like a handful who downplay how awful the story/characters are, but even they can't call it good. Nobody ever denied the gameplay was great. Its just that pushing through hours of characters having a single line on repeat makes it barely worth it.

I don't like chibi graphics and I don't play gacha games so I cannot honestly give you an example. But it would have been possible to transition the series to 3D well, but it's very transparent they did it here as a cost saving thing. It's not like their money issues aren't well known.

I feel like the big numbers could have worked, but it was handled badly. You hit 9999 well before you beat the main story, and then you jump to 999,999 and then to 9,999,999 or whatever, and the leaps are so huge you basically have to use auto battle. I didn't even mind having big numbers early, because it was fun playing around with evilities early on, but the difficulty curve was stupid.
definitely, for me part of the charm in grindan game is the growth from dealing hundreds of damage to thousands and eventually tens of thousands. big numbers is nice, but its even nicer when you need to put in the work for it, makes it feel like a great achievement

Mao had a wealth of potential but I think he's somewhat unstable because he has the power to wipe everything out of existence, at least according to that one bad end. But multiple characters have displayed that potential.
Compared to most characters, Laharl seems to be incredibly stable. Plus, Overlord Dimension seems to imply that he's capable of creating dimensions, but I'm not sure if that's unique to him or something that other characters can do. Etna seems to do something similar so I dunno. Disgaea RPG gives him far more impressive feats. He's able to basically turn entire celestial bodies into projectiles there.

It's rough to gauge Zed's strength since his own game has such inflated ass numbers, not sure if I wanna take that literally because that'd make him stronger than, anyone. Maybe it's to represent the severity of the situation with the God of Destruction obliterating everything, and getting strong enough to defeat em. He's definitely the most durable, given he's been killed every which way and Super Reincarnation just lets him pull a Popeye and dig himself up back into existence, stronger than before.
He's the only one who's canonically killed Baal before. He's one of the strongest characters in the setting. Only notable characters who likely surpass him is full-power Zetta and Zenon.
Emulation isn't a big deal these days and most people don't have machines strong enough to emulate this kind of thing. Xoomers aren't tech-savvy either, so they won't know how to use their expensive cell phones for this.

auto battle is fine but you can EASILY use it as a crutch and not even manually play new maps.
for the grind itself auto battle is exactly the same as me doing cave of ordeals and and manually inputting winged slayer x592094 times while i watch youtube.

You only get one stage of it in the demo. It seems... Okay. You get to hit a huge area or the other giant guy, but your stats don't change, so if the enemies KO you, it's over. Meanwhile the enemy version is on the other side of the map, so it seems like lifting and throwing will be a bigger deal than usual.
Its a double edge sword as when you use it, your foes will start to pull it out shortly afterwards, sometimes netting you in a fight with two other jumbo opponents.

I've played all the games since I was a kid, I still fricking hate D2. I think Adell and Rozalin are cute but everything else about the story I can't stand.
I'd recommend D2 first - the story is still decent (it weaker than D1 still but IMO it's the last decently written story in the series) and there's a ton of new features, so even if you don't wanna bother with postgame you should at least beat the game once. It'd also be very hard to try and play it after experiencing QoL features from later games.

You literally didn't read my post. I already downloaded two different switch leaks and ran into issues with both. I could have figured it out, but I'm planning on buying and playing the PC version and the saves aren't compatible so it wasn't worth putting any more time into it.

Issue 1 was that the rutracker one is in NPR format or something and I didn't want to be fricked to get an extractor for that.
Issue 2 was another download that was in .rar parts (part1.rar etc) and extracting that kept failing so I gave up. Never hit the emulator.

I did see the russian download and didn't bother with it, if it ever happens again, look for .xci or .nsp files for Switch emulators and you shouldn't have any issues

1 is the best when it comes to story and characters, yes. 4 is the better game as a whole though simply because of the QoL stuff. Plot in Disgaea games have been on a downward spiral since the 2nd game.

start with Disgaea 1 like i did, the characters are very likeable, and apparently the gameplay is more simple (while still being complex enough)
D1's gameplay is definitely more simple, I even did the postgame and it only took me around 80 hours in total from start to finish; 5 took me maybe 140 or so? I definitely took my time with it and technically I could go further but I haven't done any other postgames yet

I started with D1, and the newer games feel a little bloated with gimmick stuff nobody wants (chara world, squads, magichange, etc.).
Try D1 for the core Disgaea experience, and you can move on to later titles if you liked it.
D1 also has the best story, for what it's worth, and all the cameos in later games from earlier games' characters will make more sense if you play them all in order.
D5 will make all other games feel worse, it’s a good one to play if you don’t want to play any of the others

The general point of attack when it comes to playing the series is to play them in order of release. That way you get to enjoy new features, rather than working backwards and feeling disappointed when you realize you lose features and QoL improvements. Disgaea 1 as an example, even with all the settings set for max speed, plays extremely slow next to Disgaea 4 and 5 when you max out gameplay speed. There's also certain balance changes made that make things feel more fleshed out, versus 1 where different attacks can scale off different stats you probably don't care to raise on that unit, monsters are near useless by no magichange, fusion, strong abilities, and lack of weapons that use their INT stats, certain classes just being strictly better than others, magic is sometimes randomly bad in story missions for no reason, etc.
I still have no frickin idea what magichange is, nor do i use monsters in any disgaea game.
It's not the best in every game it appears in, but it can be abused to hilarious affect in certain games to make leveling easier (see: Felynn/Nekomatas in 4 turning into fist weapons, level them significantly by fusing one with Desco and grinding off bonus maps, now use one in combination with any humanoid that has the easily transferable ultimate 3x3 fist move and now anybody can one shot the map for easy power leveling and reincarnation)

5 is by far the best on all points, if you're interested in the story you'll want to start with 1 though (lore and worldbuilding is unironically pretty good all around)

If your base stat is 10 and you get a 5% of your stat in the last level by level up at level 50 your stat is 114.
If the base is 11 by 50 your stat is 126.
If the base is 16 by 50 your stat is 183.
If you did a weak starting character reincarnating at level 50 to a better base can be a massive improvement even if you end the game at the story boss.

Disgaea PC is the best version overall. It contains all of the content from PS2 and the extra content from the PSP and DS versions.
Original PS2 has the original etna va and invasion from within song but it doesn't allow you to skip/speed up animations which is a killer.
Disgaea Complete ruins the original artstyle and makes some gameplay changes from the original like modernizing it with the cheat shop from later entries.
They should have done a Xeno spin-off instead.

I mean it's not just that the gameplay is boring. It's boring, yeah. The interactions between the mechanics are so shallow and dull that the entire thing literally boils down to two things: turning on auto-battle and waiting. You let the game play itself and you repeat the same fights over and over and over because that's what the events are.
But the writing is just fricking dull too. There is not a single thing in Disgaea RPG that's worth paying attention to. The characters aren't even caricatures of themselves. They all say generic things, respond in generic ways, and the most generic nonsense keeps happening over and over. Every other fricking event is Laharl being turned into a girl again because Girl Laharl is the most popular character by a country mile. It's not interesting, it's not engaging, it's not funny.
I mean look at the XENO stuff. Conceptually, it's interesting, right? But that's all it is. It's conceptually interesting. Nothing interesting is actually DONE with these characters and settings. The most worthwhile element of these characters are their basic character profiles and maybe their designs. That's it. The writers can't write so it all just devolves to the same boring-ass shit.

It honesty felt like a dated mobage already when it came out.
The game was just far too small and narrow in scope. Maybe they could have done what Fate/Grand Order did. FGO isn't a particularly good game either, but they write overly extravagant stories and events for it and I guess that ends up being its main draw. FGO kinda proves that even with extremely dated gameplay, you can pull a bunch of suckers in with halfway decent writing.

The US demo for 7 is actually nerfed from the JP demo to make it harder to exploit. There's no way to fight strong enemies fast, you can't exploit the hospital gacha higher tiers, etc.

Because OP does no understand how game sales works. People are too used to seeing big budgeted game sales that they contemplate it with AA and Indies like they are meant to also roll in just as much. nothing is different, they just slapped an extra six digits on everything for the hell of it
if anything it makes the grinding less enjoyable because the numbers are so inflated that nothing feels meaningful
I feel like the big numbers could have worked, but it was handled badly. You hit 9999 well before you beat the main story, and then you jump to 999,999 and then to 9,999,999 or whatever, and the leaps are so huge you basically have to use auto battle. I didn't even mind having big numbers early, because it was fun playing around with evilities early on, but the difficulty curve was stupid.
definitely, for me part of the charm in grindan game is the growth from dealing hundreds of damage to thousands and eventually tens of thousands. big numbers is nice, but its even nicer when you need to put in the work for it, makes it feel like a great achievement

You also can gain several levels per floor from accomplishing the missions assigned to the floor. You can gain around five per floor with minimum effort.

Mao had a wealth of potential but I think he's somewhat unstable because he has the power to wipe everything out of existence, at least according to that one bad end. But multiple characters have displayed that potential.
Compared to most characters, Laharl seems to be incredibly stable. Plus, Overlord Dimension seems to imply that he's capable of creating dimensions, but I'm not sure if that's unique to him or something that other characters can do. Etna seems to do something similar so I dunno. Disgaea RPG gives him far more impressive feats. He's able to basically turn entire celestial bodies into projectiles there.

It's rough to gauge Zed's strength since his own game has such inflated ass numbers, not sure if I wanna take that literally because that'd make him stronger than, anyone. Maybe it's to represent the severity of the situation with the God of Destruction obliterating everything, and getting strong enough to defeat em. He's definitely the most durable, given he's been killed every which way and Super Reincarnation just lets him pull a Popeye and dig himself up back into existence, stronger than before.
6's story going "but wait the big-bad is in another castle" ruined 6 for me. I liked the cast, but Jesus did it draw itself out.

They went from down-to-the-wire financial straits to being able to at least assure they have a few years of making games left in them.

auto battle is fine but you can EASILY use it as a crutch and not even manually play new maps.
for the grind itself auto battle is exactly the same as me doing cave of ordeals and and manually inputting winged slayer x592094 times while i watch youtube.
if anything auto battle helps your hands, but i know most people turn it on and sleep.
i'm excited to see that auto battle in 7 is a grinded resource, so you set it up and can only use it to grind a map.

You only get one stage of it in the demo. It seems... Okay. You get to hit a huge area or the other giant guy, but your stats don't change, so if the enemies KO you, it's over. Meanwhile the enemy version is on the other side of the map, so it seems like lifting and throwing will be a bigger deal than usual.
