First game is the simplest one mechanics wise, so yeah, start with that one.
1 is the best plot if you care about that, the gameplay is generally a linear improvement every entry except for 6 and maybe 7. That makes it harder to go back to old entries since they lack so much QoL improvements. If you want to see the series grow, play through in release order, if you just want the one, go with 4 or 5.

There are tons of high quality games recently Armored Core, Resident Evil 4 DLC, Baldurs Gate 3, and even Starfield to some extent, just to name a few. You can easily get thousands of hours playing those games.
Disgaea on the other hand is just a low quality game. it's 2023 and yet they are still releasing these low budget games when they have the resources from their Disgaea gacha games they could use to try and make a high quality Disgaea but no they're just lazy.
The main cause? It's because Nippon Ichi Software is a PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANY. THEY HAVE SHAREHOLDERS

Yes anon, that money went into D7, D6 was the budget-less title missing 80% of the characters and features.
The budget is not much from what I've seen the game looks generic. The shareholders probably bought their yachts instead of using the funds to make a high quality triple-a Disgaea that can compete with other jrpg games like Persona or FF at least to SOME EXTENT.
Most of the old people have either stepped down or left and replaced by the newer people. Haratake's art is the only thing keeping them alive at this point.
Oh and apparently there's a guy that's trying to copy his style that works on their gacha game and will probably replace him soon.

DLC character evilities are usually pretty OP. So if you want to do deep engame grind, those make it much, much easier.
Val probably comes with prinny instructor again which i like to help with the grind.
There's usually some evilities that helps with the grind or make your numbers even bigger numbers but you can probably finish whatever big last challenge the game has to offer (probably Baal) just with base game stuff.
