What level am I supposed to be for the end of chapter 2? I can't even tank the big dudes basic AOE. I swear this game has the roughest starter levels then any other.

NTA, but learn to Combo.
Send out a single filler unit the first turn to lure the enemy generics over. Watch them die.
Send out a second filler unit to lure the enemy generics even closer. Watch them die.
Send out the rest of your team and plan out a single turn where every one of your deployed units attacks an enemy to build up your combo multipler. Before you press 'Execute' and unleash all of your queued attacks, Jumbo Fuji and make sure he's the last unit to attack. If your ATK is high enough, and your combo multiplier big enough, you should be able to one-shot Yeyasu.
My Fuji was lvl 12, didn't use any other units other than to bait the rage meter.
Since the gigasaster attack hits for 450+ no matter your defense, it seems, you either have to stock up on HP or hope for a nick / parry.
Here's the stats. I got lucky with a parry.
just have a few units die then jumbo with Fuji. At least that's all i did in the demo.
there's two ways to deal with the final boss of ch 2.

it's not really explained in game, but the field-wide abilities a unit applies when they're expanded are applied to all units, not just their team - even if they're buffs. so you can use the boss's own defensive ability against him by fielding ALL your troops. it seems counterintuitive since the boss has a heavy hitting AoE, but the more units you have the more you can resist the attack

Why is 5 trash?
The new (post-D4 exodus) team does not understand what made the series popular to begin with.
They tried to go for a more mainstream audience with D5 without understanding what people are actually looking for from the series, so they upset both the hardcore fans and didn't manage to really drawn in very many newcomers.
D5 threw out countless systems that had been refined to near perfection over the last decade and replaced it with poorly thought extremely one note but also severely imbalanced garbage like curry.
If you want to see the most obvious straightforward tell they do not understand the franchise just look at D5's menus.
They rearranged them all in the most nonsensical and inefficient way possible, removed input queues, and slapped slow as frick animations and fades on them. Menuing is an integral part of the game, nobody wants to wait for an hour of menu animations over their 100h playthrough. Menus don't have to be pretty and flashy, they have to be fast, efficient, and functional - in D1-4 you can straight up menu as fast as your fingers allow, you never have to wait on anything. D5 makes you sit there and watch overblown animations every time you press a button.
D5's writing is also the exact kind of generic garbage all the older games shit on and made fun of. They took a series full of meta humor that parodies popular tropes and gets downright vicious with its satire sometimes and turned it into a generic Weekly Shounen Jump manga.

The D5 Carnage Baal speedrun is under 5 hours, it's pretty silly how busted every single one of the new additions to the game are. It's pretty nuts. Every gameplay system the new team added is just completely broken with virtually zero regard given to game balance.

This has nothing to do with grind. It's about balancing all the different ways to get more powerful to be roughly equal.
It's especially bad in D5 since the power ceiling is so low. It's trivially easy to hit the stat caps with extracts and all your different damage mods have very low caps, only further compounding the issue.
Most activities simply aren't worth doing at all since they comparatively add so little while the good ones are so overwhelmingly imbalanced in how quickly you get stronger that you will hit your stat/mod caps with just them in no time at all.
Farming Extracts is especially bad since it makes the entire item world almost entirely pointless. There's not much reason to spend much time in there when you already hit the stat caps completely naked and the Innocent Farm gives you Innocents more quickly than you could ever capture them yourselves. You pretty much only go in there for stuff like putting move and range boosts on your gear and even that is fricking pointless half the time.
I think it's quicker to get innocents from the farm not-subdued (don't upgrade the squad to full) and then subdue them yourself with hunter squad
late game you just copy items with full innocents from the item world
curry just gives you hp, crit and regen for the baal fight ( I assume that's what they go with)
not op and speed runs or challenges do use the item world, probably for mastering classes quickly with geo blast trick and for professional innocent
they do use most of the gameplay systems, having a rather deep knowledge of what specific evilites to use in particular

I've only played D2 and D5 and I'd say Disgaea 5 was a pretty good follow up to D2. Not sure what went on in D3 and D4, but all the systems of Disgaea 5 were well put together.

Mechanically it's almost exactly 5. There are male and female versions of almost every humanoid, plus they added some new classes. They fixed almost everything from 6, brought back the juice bar and the item world explorer which were its best features, and there's a hospital gacha so you never run out of prizes. It's pretty great.

there is an item called soda that can be purchased from the store for cheap and can be used twice (they turn into opened sodas).
if you want to breeze past the story, you can over-level a character by making them spam sodas. (the exp you gain from using items is also affected by exp-rate modifiers)

get pirilika's evility that gives +50% more xp to allies close by and spread that through scrolls to your other units
unlock the cheat shop and max out the xp gain as much as you can
pass the triple xp bill on the dark assembly
i think the sea angel quest only asks for consumables and is actually mistranslated to ask for angel cakes, unlock them with mint gums from rosen queen, get their "give +30% more xp to allies in map" happy song evility and also spread it to your units
in 2-3 there's the +1 attack geoblock so you can spam buffs more times in one turn, if you wanna maximize how many times it happens you can start using a felynn and make use of their unique evility by leaving her at low hp when casting the buff spell onto herself and closeby units
unlock the xp sharing squad in the assembly and max out the upgrades, leave the felynn as the leader and start leveling more units at once
once you get martial training you can fill out the juice bar with the end of level rewards when grinding out the last map for squad upgrades, i still think the buff strat is faster though (i can barely get 80 levels per run on my felynn with my setups in martial, while you get at least 10 per turn when spamming buffs which takes less time to do)
im sure there are more optimizations available, emblems from healer gacha rewards can have the +25% xp property as well
also i think using the 3x3 version of the spell instead goes without saying
the extra xp evilities from gacha rewards scrolls and evility shop are also good to have

No, it was never fixed. The crash is more likely to occur the more sounds are missing so if you restart every so often you can play through it but to say that it emulates well is just moronic.

I actually thought the first two bosses were surprisingly tough when I played straight in the demo.
These threads fricking SUCK compared to the Galleria threads earlier this year.
I think the Refrain/Galleria threads had more DRPG people than NIS/Disgaea fans, a few months after Galleria Dungeon Travelers 2/2-2 came out and the threads were similarly as comfy. Disgaea also is more popular so it gets relatively more baiting, I think (to keep with the above example, Etrian threads are a tossup between decent and awful, when I followed them back in the day)
Labyrinth series is much newer and people are mostly content with it. Disgaea is a legacy series and the last entry made a lot of changes people didn't like and the anger is still there and carrying over.
Its not the labyrinth series its the witch series and its a decade old.
I consider them separate, Witch and the Hundred Knight is a fricking 3d ARPG while Refrain and Galleria are 2D DRPGs. Two genres not even remotely close and caters to two entirely different audiences.
That's like saying the Prinny games aren't part of the Disgaea series, kinda silly, but you do you anon.
They share the same continuity and Nikke is explicitly mentioned in galleria. Its the same series even if the gameplay is different.
Also don't forget that Ganker leaked Galleria itself, before any group.

The end game took such a fricking nose-dive, but I think I'll beat it this time just for frick's sake.
The puppet building is definitely complex and took me a while to truly understand it. Refrain's is superior, even if it lacks in variety.

The balance is just out the window, and the final boss at the end is easily beat-able even without maxing your clarity on the puppets.
It's like Galleria had such a cool puppet building system that improved on refrain, and they wasted it on a really shit end-game.

For that alone, Refrain will always feel like the better game to me.

He just wanted to help you uncover the map. It's not his fault that he built the jump to lead to a bunch of automoving platforms that shove you into a pit.
They ran out of budget and were told to rush the game out after it was barely half finished, if you read some of the side materials there were supposed to be a LOT more dungeons, specifically one for each of the special hidden rooms with the random NPCs you find on your re-visit of the Manor after you are done with the Apartments.
There's a lot more story content they wanted to do for the 2nd and 3rd acts of the game, but the higher ups forced them to just quickly finish the game and push it out.
Really sucks, it could have been an absolute monstrosity of a game.

D1 complete is a remaster in the new artstyle, personally I would say just get D1 PC so you can enjoy some of the kino old monsters that they didn't bother respriting like Galactic Demon.

Complete is a remake that has a fair bit of differences and actually less content since they didn't bother drawing any new sprites for it so they just erased whatever they couldn't copy paste sprites for from other games.
Play them in order and move on to the next one if you still like it.

I'd advise starting with 1, it has the best story and characters, also has the lightest amount of mechanics so it's an easier introduction.
Going back to the earlier games after playing the latter ones is also a bit rough as they don't have as much QoL.

There shouldn't be any need to as long as you have a decent grasp of the mechanics. You might want to look up Rank 39/40 weapon names or spawn floors for specific pirates but beyond that not much else.
I'd assume most people will look up the most efficient grinding methods and blast through the content.
If you are the kind of person that likes experimenting and figuring out how to break games yourself there's a lot to be said about doing it all blind though. Coming up with setups and refining your strategy and ultimately seeing it all work out is pretty satisfying.

The DLC characters have more generic evilities to spread around and obviously their own kit of unique evility, skills and hell mode to play around with.
it can help increase damage numbers just a bit further or optimize the grind.
Also Priere in D5 at max cheat shop difficulty was also a decent end game challenge but i don't think D6 had any dlc stage that scaled like that and i don't know shit about D7 dlc yet.
"Story" of the DLC stages is usually pretty forgettable. Get it if you want more tools to play around with but it's really not necessary to finish post game with just the base game.

I think they're cute. Sure sprites were great but they put enough personality into the animations for them to not be soulless slop. The 3d models tend to freeze my game for a couple seconds every now and then, but that's just because I'm on a craptop and don't want to turn my texture quality down.

Going into the item world at any point in the campaign will make your party really OP. The item world characters have high levels but lower stats than the characters outside, so they give a lot of xp for the same difficulty.
The class variety is great, and I finally get to run my death parade team of spirit+zombie+zombie maiden+prinny under a sorcerer necromancer.
The plot is on par for modern disgaea (low-tier shonen) but I personally disliked 5's plot more, if only because it had zeroken in it.

Yes, it runs totally fine at 800p undocked or 1080p docked. I didn't notice the fan kick up undocked at all.
I also pushed it to 2160p with fsr upscaling and that ran fine too (but didn't really look that different from 1080)

No, the story in Disgaea is awful and something you skip most of the time. If the gameplay isn't for you then this is not your series. Only early in the series did NIS put effort into the stories but they have only continued to get worse as the series progressed. The first game in particular had a lot of charm to it but PS2 era NIS no longer exists.

Generally only hear issues about Disgaea 1 which there are now two PC versions of which only make it that much more confusing. While not perfect the older one works fine for me though but from what people say it is a case by case type of thing. Literally a "it worked for me :)" thing. I could be wrong but the later games seem to be borderline made for PCs with a ton of foresight. At the very least I hope that to be the case but Neo-NIS do be some dumb ass frickers.

maxing all classes and then levelling while in the elite 4 squad should get you 10 million. with max +100% stats from evilities you'll reach 20million. next step would be extract/prisoner farming for another 10 million(bringing you to 40 million with the evility bonus)
at that point you'll need to level gear in the item world but 40 million on a couple units and the right strategy should be enough for 0 difficulty carnage baal.

I really want to stomach disgaea 2's felony system but it sucks badly
Its the game's biggest flaw, making nay new units you make or recruit always behind and needing to play catch up since you can't move them around freely like statisticians.
it's my least favorite part of the game
It sucks but you can make it a lot faster by having a few dedicated item world running units (throwers, one fist user and Tink).
And most importantly, you can enter the court gate with a tower, and every unit in the tower gets the felonies as well.

You fight the magistrates like 2-3 times each and they are all noncharacters except Partyasu.
Also this is the first game where I felt like the story structure didnt work, aka 5 stages.
So many chapters the plot was resolved by like the third chapter then the last two just drug shit out.

I am slowly doing the story with the main 6 + four generics (chapter 7 done i think, yeyasu just got his 2nd evility), and i have one uber character on the side doing item world stuff. Trying not to get both stuff crossed so I don't trivialize the game. Goal is to get a trap before finishing the main storyline
I like the characters so far, except maybe Higan who's intro is really bad and who's one note so far. But it seems she'll be relevant later.
Gameplay is neat, they took the AI stuff and restrained it enough (and didnt balance around having it), they took Curry and reskinned it into a less tedious and more balanced version, they streamlined the Item World research squad, they pushed a lot of things in the Dark Assembly so you have more options to scale your characters, there's two more ways to get rank up rather than Item God 2, and the Item World floor limit itself is its best iteration yet.

I feel like the only real use for it is for Fuji to make some bosses more manageable due to their abilities making them stupidly more durable then they have any right to be.
Ceefore's hell mode would be useful in a world without Jumbo, infinite range is seriously busted.
But with Jumbo you just have infinite range anyways
And everyone can jumbo too, further proving to be the better mechanic.

I have no fricking idea why they did this but the sound effects and animations for it are really fricking shit in 7. It's super unsatisfying and rapes your ears with distorted overlapping effects

There are two Mystery Rooms that let you buy duplicates of the item you're in, but you have to pay for it.

The duplicate will have all the levels, passives, etc. Each IW run is in smaller chunks since you can Reincarnate items now. A common item only has 10 floors, 20 for rare, 30 for legendary. Once you max the item out, you can Reincarnate it into a higher-ranked item. So it's like you're "banking" your improvements pretty often so the duplicate will never be far off from the item's current power.
Jumbo seems like one of those things where they could just straight up remove it without replacement and the game would just be objectively better.
The "you get one evility that affects everyone on the map, friend or foe" effect is fun and balanced
The infinite range, 5x5 aoe hits, and full heal less so
One thing I do like about it is the computer will break it out after you do, making it you think about when you should pull it out.
I dont get why it full heals enemies when they use it.
Fricking obnoxious in item world against gods/generals
I will say that having a auto-revive class was a good idea, but awful when actually implemented. I swear 50% of the Innocents I find are from this class, i kill them then they revive and die during the opposing turn. Ruined.
Speaking of Innocents, thankfully I don't have to farm Statisticians this time, that was such a boring yet mandatory part of the previous games.
