You might have caught a portion of an ironic segment in a Metroid video, where he actually encourages people to use emulation to play Metroid games that are no longer accessible.
He has also openly stated how a big chunk of footage for a massive Pikmin video he made was recorded thanks to free camera through Dolphin (I believe).
He's not against emulation at all, but he does try to avoid the ire of Nintendo (i.e. not receiving review copies, strikes etc.) by avoiding the topic most of the time or being indirect.

The combat gets stale after the first few battles already and despite leaning so hard into the action adventure direction they still refuse to do anything actually interesting with Mario's moveset.
Tanabe is a hack.
It definitely suffers when you go constantly battle to battle but when you are used to it, it's not really a problem. I do wish Mario got a lot more variety in the types of attacks he can do.
The game offers a lot more to the experience is what I want from the next game.
Realistically, we are probably getting a new system but with how things are going, and how ToK apparently had exp in it's beta, they are probably going to go all in, but we can do nothing but speculate at this point.
We are already 3 years in, the next game is right around the corner, but I still feel positive about it because TOK is still a great game in my eyes, it does a lot of good shit and I want that quality to stay in the next game.

It's hard to talk about the battle system cause it's always controversial but it's basically just solving puzzles and you get used to it at a certain point, every area has new sets to solve and it's meant to rewards patience. I like puzzle games so I didn't really have an issue, though it's still flawed with attack variety for sure.
If anything, most people, even the naysayers agree that the ring system was at its best with bosses

But battles have a timer that count down
It's because of how different it's set up
with normal battles, you are lining up enemies so you can attack them in groups, some enemies providing throw offs, like boo's disappearing when it's your turn and nippers changing the position of their chomps.
Bosses are different cause now the boss is in the middle and Mario needs to not only make a path to get to them, but they all have their own unique gimmicks, it's definitely the best use of it and provides variety.
The timer provides urgency so you aren't just stalling, they want you to adapt to learning the positions fast, letting you use coins to extend the timer. It's definitely finicky, but you get used to it.

Sonic I get it, it has SPEED and ACTION, the characters are all anthropomorphized colorful animals, each one with a strong personality trait, like Sonic is the cool, Tails is the nerd, Shadow is the edgy, etc. But fricking Paper Mario? There's the cute aesthetic and all, I heard some of the games have bizarre stories, but how the frick those games have so many autists fightning about on the internet? And making OCs? It's all just Mario characters.
TTYD specifically has very unique character designs that some would consider deviantart-y, but SPM imo is the one that takes the cake in ramping up the autism. Its OCs look nothing like Mario, it's a story that has nothing to do with Mario and the gameplay is flash-tier platforming with the worst level design of TTYD turned up tenfold.
The end result is that it has groomed a bunch of kids into wanting Romeo and Juliet Mario stories that has them going to hell, meta jokes about otakus and dating simulators and the world is ending and all that schizo crap.

Ryota's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that means he has no other style of writing. Later i read a lavish, loving review of Super Paper Mario. It said something to the effect of, "if these kids are playing Super Paper Mario at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play Fez. And they were quite right. they were not being ironic. when you play "Super Paper Mario" you are, in fact, trained to play Fez.
