I kept reading the OP as Disgea 4 and was very confused. My go-to realistic pick would be Setzer, chaotic choice is Benjamin from Mystic Quest. Not a Nomura-style redesign, but a human sized 3D character model based on his original chibi art.

Minimal new sad boys with swords. Plenty of other character types and classic weapons going unrepresented or underrepresented. More spears than just Kain, a whip user or two, summoners than just Yuna who can call on more than just Ifrit or Shiva or the other usuals.
It's not the fault of 3v3 specifically. The problem was trying to design and balance characters specifically around team play. Instead of everyone being functional on their own, characters were intentionally designed flawed with the intention of other characters being picked around them. A 3v3 side mode in which all characters can hold their own, on their own, would be fine.

I have an embarrassing amount of hours spent playing 012. Not story mode, just 1-1 quick battle with equipment and summons disabled (would disable passive abilities too if I could).
I just wish this series could focus more on combat and less on RPG. Make 1v1 viable again, more neutral stages, solve the awful loading times (fricking NT).
