I don't watch Sakurai, but didn't Kid Icarus forcibly make the game easier if you lost enough? DMC3 just gives you the option, but never forces it on you
They did but it was part of the punishment for losing since high difficulty gave you better rewards in kid icarus so the player either had to suck it up or restart the level.
I would think there's a better way to do it. Just lower the prizes at the end, but still keep the difficulty if wanted. Not everyone wants to play on an easier mode
I think it's a good system because it rewards only good players to see the final parts of a level on the highest difficulty. What you propose is basically saying that there are people who like to play on hard even though they are garbage at the game but are cushioned by the checkpoint system. Playing on hard is for people who want to test their skills and not for twitch streamers doing le funny challenge run even though they are shit.
The wager system could have easily been split off for that it wasn't necessary to tie them together. It already seals off paths if you can't keep yourself alive forcing the player to go back and bet again just to get some more practice beyond comfort zone is infuriating.
They could have put in a practice mode or level segment selection mode for quality of life but that is a separate issue apart from their decision how they designed their difficulty system.
It's pretty flawed only because it doesn't let you practice, and in a game with a dodge system as wonky as KI:U's some deaths will be inevitable. If you want to reward good players for good play something like Platinum's scoring system works far better towards this end, if well balanced, and you can even keep good play tied to rewards in this case.
Either way being forced to restart instead of reloading from the beginning (let's assume chapters don't have checkpoints in higher difficulties, they're short as hell anyways) just adds extra time. At least DMC3 asks you first, Sakurai's take berates you intrinsically and adds extra annoyances over what you already have.
Let me pick a difficulty and stick with it.
Kid Icarus is not a pure skill game though. You are expected to earn better equipment and then challenge higher difficulty for even better equipment. Everything outside of that design is in the realm of personally created player challenges. I don't see what's wrong with that design. I find S ranking DMC5 more frustrating because the only difficult part of the levels is at the end or a boss so I have to play the entire level again to try once more. Not to mention S rank is tied to more than just surviving.
What’s more insulting?
DMC3 going; ‘You’ve died so much, you’ve unlocked easy mode’
Or Ninja Gaiden having a extended cutscene calling you a little b***h and tying a little white bow to your wrist to remind you for the rest of the game of what mode you’re on
Ninja Gaiden Black is so fricking annoying because every 4 to 5 deaths the game will prompt you to ask if you want to switch to easy mode instead of just letting you press to continue
>Ninja Gaiden Black is so fricking annoying because every 4 to 5 deaths the game will prompt you to ask if you want to switch to easy mode
The switch to Easy Mode is only available during the Hayabusa Village segment, that's a tiny portion of the game to be dying so much on
The difficulty problem has already been solved: let players change the difficulty on the fly and add an achievement for beating the game on the hardest difficulty without switching to a lower one.

God of War (original games) also have this and I pressed it accidentally because I just expected the restart prompt. There's a special place in hell for devs who do this.
>dmc4 as lady >always die like 3 times to that one big guy boss fight >game automatically changes dificulty >literally cant get good because the game wont let me >completely drop it and never touch it again
great game design its like the devs dont want me to actually play the game, at least dmc5 was much better
I don't know what's more shocking, knowing so little about DMC that you aren't aware that missions are listed separately per difficulty and you're never forced to a different one, you only unlock easy mode, or choosing a widely known and beloved game series as your choice for poor bait
>dmc3 btfo
I legit returned my copy of DMC3 when it asked if I wanted to try very easy mode. I got filtered
>got filtered

it's not I guarantee you I played that recently and its through the whole game
I don't remember it being like that and the wiki doesn't seem to agree either:
https://ninjagaiden.fandom.com/wiki/Ninja_Gaiden_Black
Is this Sigma?
oh frick yeah its sigma nevermind
That's dumb on their part, then. If you're a ways into the game and haven't switched difficulties the game should assume you want the challenge
The latter is much more detailed and interested and almost sounds like a sexual humiliation thing
So I would say the first one, NSMB style.
The difficulty problem has already been solved: let players change the difficulty on the fly and add an achievement for beating the game on the hardest difficulty without switching to a lower one.
Residen Evil 2 remake has this and when you accidentaly press yes it autosaves.

But wait, no DMC game automatically changes diffiiculty. Not even the dreaded DMC2.
Not that anon but there's the enemy handicap feature that nerfs enemies after you die enough on the same mission.
>Actually dying as Lady
What the frick?
>DMC4 automatically changes difficulty
Both a moron AND a liar. Epic
moron

Restart the mission. The enemy handicap will be removed and now you can git gud.
I forgot how soulful Uprising was(and how cute Pit was)
I hope Nintendo actually listens to Sakurai and ports it.
I absolutely despise the "lower the difficulty after dying once" crap that Sakurai kept using.
Same, this system was fricking awful. Not being able to retry and practice hard parts fricking sucks.
yeah. I want to try the challenge a little before getting forced to an easier difficulty. if it's not optional, there should be some leeway.
Proof dmc is harder than ninja gaiden
Vergil 3
Both the games asking to lower difficulty and Fiend's Cauldron suck.
Just have a fricking "retry the stage" button, if I am playing on Dick-crushing Ultra mode I probably want to keep practicing that.
