1 HD then 2 HD then 3 HD. DS versions are obsolete. Untolds are completely different games.

Do you want authentic and can readily draw maps? DS. Go with the HD versions for QoL like automapping if you're ready to pirate because they're way too expensive on their own individually, much less together. Untold still has Classic Modes along with a Story, but are massively reworked and rebalanced, which are more newbie friendly and might be up your alley if you're looking for something with more structure, but isn't quite the original game as a result.

      >automapping
      this shit ruined the genre
why not just watch a youtuber play the game for you

you still gotta hit up those tiles individually, which means wandering into the traps and FOEs the hard way

      >because they're way too expensive on their own individually, much less together.
I won't tell you that you need to buy games. By all means don't if you don't feel like it.
But I'll just say that these rereleases are no more expensive than the games were originally. And with the three for the price of two package deal, the full bundle is actually still cheaper than the games originally went for.

If they were worth it back then, I do struggle with the idea that they wouldn't still be worth it today. It's not as if the games have grown redundant or became any worse somehow. They remain genre favourites and are still enjoyed to this day.
So yeah. Pirate the games if you want to. But this idea that game prices need to slashed or decimated just because the games are old just kind of rubs me the wrong way.

        >But I'll just say that these rereleases are no more expensive than the games were originally
        >original DS games are 30
        >each game is $40
        >even if you do buy the bundle discount, the games only $3 less than they originally did
        >bu-but muh genre stap-
Stop hiding behind such worthless ass excuses. Removing the art and music compression does not warrant that pricetag in any way

But you never answered why they need to be cheaper. Claiming that the games are old isn't actually an argument in out itself.

It is. Things depreciate in value over time. This is Economics 101.

You can draw maps in HD so its an irrelevant point.

DS or HD. Hold off on the Untolds until you've played the originals.
But you might as well just start with EO3. Which doesn't even have an Untold version. One of the most solid entries regardless.

HD, but make sure you play expert mode. The original games had no difficulty modes, so "expert" is the original difficulty, and "basic" is a baby mode they added.

If you've never played them just start with the HD games. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise.

If you have an actual DS, go for that. There's something especially satisfying about drawing the map yourself. If not, might as well go HD. Know that "expert" difficulty in HD is the original, as-intended difficulty.

I mostly agree with this. However, the QoL items in 1HD are hard to pass up. Strafing, faster movement speed in dungeons, additional mapping tools (eo1 having a cap on how many items that can be marked), any portrait on any class, and auto battle are huge to me.
Additionally, claim it makes the game easier all you like, the skills and additional levels of skills being adjusted to actually work and not be buggy broken pieces of shit coding that do not function is also a nice change.
Again though, physically mapping on the DS and 3DS beats out mouse mapping any day

Contrary to everyone's advice start with untold, it's far superior to the original in every way. Only nostalgiagays can defend EO1.

I disagree because even if we ignore the QoL stuff in Untold there's the aspect of how the story is presented. Untold pretty much spoils the big twist of the series from the get go and there is a different in tone when going through the plot with characters of your own vs a premade one.

It is the SMT4A argument of the EO community, "untold is bad because of the story" like the story has ever mattered in this dungeon crawler. Let's just focus on this one weak point and ignore massive improvements in every single other aspect. Untold to EO1 is what SMT4A is to SMT4, yeah the story got weaker everything else is so much better it's hard to believe it's even the same game.

I ain't even saying it's bad because it got a set story, that's just you. I'm just saying there's a huge tonal difference between the two versions and if you start off with Untold it might be hard for someone to go and enjoy EO1. Especially now with the HD version out and all.

        >Untold pretty much spoils the big twist of the series from the get go
The series being the far off future of Earth isn't unique and was a stupid as hell plot twist. I've read isekai trash that handled it better.

      >it's far superior to the original in every way
      Bullshit.
For starters. If you play Story Mode before Classic Mode then you're just straight up doing yourself a disservice and I am not even saying the Story Modes are bad. Still the wrong order to experience them in.
But if you are playing Classic Mode then you've all but lost the advantages of playing Untold already. The balance changes, aside from some bug fixes, hardly improves the game. And at that point you genuinely might as well just play the originals for the legacy and perspective, which in turn would just improve your experience of Untold's Story Mode whenever you'd actually get around to playing that.

On what ground would playing Untold first actually be preferable?

        >The balance changes, aside from some bug fixes, hardly improves the game.
All I need to know is that you're a blind zealot to the originals and there's no need to talk to you anymore.

    >Start Etryan Oddisey 1
    >All's going well
    >Get to a sidequest on the second level that tells me I have to have an expedition for 3 days straight without going back
    >Autism about needing to go back and sell my stuff once the bag is full and the fact that there's a bunch of stairs leading outside the level, meaning I have to stay on the same 10 or so tiles, going back and forth for 3 days is impossible for me
    >But cant also just move forward with the game without doing sidequest first.
    >Drop the game entirely.
Too bad, I was even getting into the idea of imagining my characters backstories and how they would react to their adventures. But I just couldnt do it.

Simple fix for me. That taught me I just don't give a frick about every sidequest. Good thing too, since some later ones are just absurd for little to no payoff

There's a hidden well on the level that an npc hints about. It's a safe area 3-tiles wide with no monsters. You just walk back and forth.

    HD > Untold > don't play DS
HD with the text mod is strictly better than DS since there's some bugfixes and needed buffs to useless skills.
Untold is basically an entirely different game. If you really like the music you can mod it into the HD versions. I would recommend you don't, especially for EO2.

4 is one of the simplest and easiest and also very satisfying to break, but then again its overworld system is kinda weird and has nothing to do with the rest of the series so I'm not sure if it's a good choice.
    Just go with 3 then.

The originals are honestly just shitty. Also 1 Untold is shitty.

Start with 2 Untold. or 4. They're the first games that are just straight up good games instead of being pure autism timedrains.
