Yes, it aged bad only because they added milk in the wine
Best game ever.
Having said that, you're almost 2 decades late to the party. It has been a rotting corpse for a long time.
Does this mean people should just play the DS version if they're interested then
There is no "DS version". There is only one game that is Ragnarök Online. All the other products with the logo and name attached to it are cashgrabs only related to the original game in name and look.
Accept that you're too late and play something else. The only people left playing this are ultra autists who can not let go of something that was good almost 20 years ago.
the DS version is less of a cash grab than the original MMO. there was no sub fee with timegating
>there was no sub fee with timegating
holy fricking zoomer
the area in which you had to subscribe was when mmos still where good.
botting had a cost attached to it, meaning there simply was less of it. no p2w. very few people multi-clienting.
fp2 killed mmos.
>muh zoomer boogeyman
I played during that era homosexual. MMOs being good back then doesn't change the fact that they were designed as cash grabs with bullshit grind based timegating to get more sub fees.
Anon, I hate to break this to you, but literally every single video game is a cash grab, including most free ones.
Only games designed to use their mechanics to get more money out of you are. You romanticize MMOs but you're too stupid to realize they caused the games as a service cancer.
Nah, you're just itching to start an argument about <thing you don't like>, so you pretend to know about what I think.
Get lost.
If you like subscription based gaming then you must love battle passes and think they produce premium game content
You are a moron. It's not about liking it, it's about realizing that it was the best model for this kind of game.
I'd prefer if everything was free, flawless and exactly catered to my needs and desires, but that's not how life works.
If you measure everything by an ideal gold standard, you can never enjoy anything. I'm not miserable enough to live like that, so I'll have to leave you alone with your sorrow.
>projecting this hard
The games weren't better. You were just happy back then.
Are you moronic? The most botted game ever is Oldschool RuneScape, and the operation is done with subs.
>but OSRS has a f2p mode!
That nobody uses, because not only are f2p items worth jackshit, but you also can't trade until after several days and requisites which would long before net a ban to your account.
It's fun for the first 3 months, then it's nothing but idling in prontera or morroc.
Bros.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DuvYC3zENI
>those first notes
>feels overload
Everytime
i don't hear the poring moving around
Yes. Your best best is a private server emulating an older version of the game at realistic rates like payon stories, but that one has issues with its leveling meta and it might be a little past its prime. New servers, if they're put together well, are a lot of fun to play though and even trying it for my first time a few years ago I fell in love.
>try random server with 100x rate on all aspects just to frick around
>kill random poring
>level up 30 times in one kill
I felt so fricking dirty and bad I had to uninstall and find a proper private server
I genuinely don't understand why people play on even things like 10x or 5x servers, it seems like the majority of people just refuse to play on 1x and it all ruins the game. What are you really going to do once you hit 99 and farm your cards, sit in prontera? The game isn't about reaching max level or having all the best gear, it's about long grinds and meeting people that make those long grinds less boring and give you more meaning to doing them. Having level 99 feel like an attainable goal instead of some vague far out milestone is a mistake.
Socialization in MMO is more or less dead in general. RO got hit especially bad since pservers don't have the population necessary to facilitate communication and many allow multiaccounts, so there's even less incentive.
>But what about official servers
Lol
Lmao even
I think it's mostly about the drop rates. Getting to level 99 is a goal you can see, while farming for MVP cards is an absolute nightmare since bosses were camped 24/7 by hundreds of people and had slow spawn timers (hours) and fricking 0.01% drop rates.
It's good for soulless korean bugs, but westeners got quickly bored of that shit.
You aren't supposed to get MvP cards though, it's supposed to be something absolutely crazy that takes like a year of grinding and you see someone in the open world doing unique shit with it and feel amazed. It's not made to be an actual goal for anyone but .01% of the playerbase.
no, the real end game is being a monk or crusader, spamming asura strike or crusader strike in pvp mode, and idling in the most populated area when you're not pvping
what the frick is crusader strike?
lvl 99 isn't max level and hasn't been for nearly 15 years
>15 years
oh shut up, renewal isn't 15 years old
is it? ;_;
>iROwiki
>Renewal Release
17.06.2009
It's been 14 years and a half years old.
13 years now
no one plays post-renewal, the game is all pre-renewal pservers
If you look at pserver listings, Renewal servers outnumber and outplayercount Pre-Re servers.
If you look beyond international servers and towards BR and SEA servers, the disparity becomes even bigger. They have multiple servers with 4~6k people.
UARO is the hottest shit in years and it goes just over 1k and nothing else even comes close in count.
i wasnt talking about "people," anon
I will never understand that meme and why pre-renewal Black folk force it.
looooool
i bet you started shitting and crying too
LOL what a fricking homosexual you are
also why lie, 100x on a poring won't even get you close to 30 levels
face it you're just a shitposter that has never touched this game once in your life
>We couldn't protect its smile
Imagine a game with artstyle of TOS, the mix of TOS' more actiony combat and RO's mob management gameplay and without all the moronic decisions TOS made after beta ended.
>Imagine a game with artstyle of TOS
mushy and forgettable?
frick you.
that's the same kind of bland mush. all that's missing is some brown or piss filter.
RO has clear and strong colors, and great constrasts. TOS looks like someone put a bucket of paint into their rectum and shat on a canvas.
>RO has clear and strong colors
>Meanwhile, the entirety of schwarzwald republic:
>same anon btw
Though mind, I agree with you that art direction of RO is amazing, i'm mostly baiting you to post the locations you like and elaborating more. For my part, I don't feel like TOS artstyle is bland or mushy - cluttered, maybe, but the art direction always had sort of fairy tale feel to me.
It's that time of year anons! Sneak the Lutie music mix into your christmas songs at family events. No one will ever know. 6 songs.
being honest, no-one ever has a reason to go north of Aldebaran anyway
Make your own thread monkey.
I wanted to like ToS but theme parks MMOs are pure cancer.
That honestly was the main problem for me. RO locations felt more real, many of them had a mix of mobs that was interesting. You had to lead dangerous mobs out of juicy spots, wing strategically and think about optimizing your paths. In TOS you have small patches where mobs respawn and stand until someone decides to pay them attention. It kills the magic.
It also lended to a progression design where 'everything is useful'. RO's strongest element was any player, at any point in the game, could grind something with drops that someone wanted, and it meant that tuning builds became a lateral game as you got more tools for your class to deal with more mobs, giving you more options to grind as you leveled, based on market demands.
You also didn't have to "wait for endgame" (partially because endgame in RO was WoE and hat collecting), level 70 and 3-4kk in items and you had a perfectly competent build (varies by class, like wizards hardly needing ANY gear).
Exactly. Gear not being soulbound or level limited respected that also. Max level wasn't the barrier for entry - you could start meaningfully 'playing' RO as early as class change, and every level hence helped broadened the variety of content you could engage with. But those poring were still meaningful content in the broader scheme because of cards for example.
It takes a minute to 'get', but levels in RO beyond a point exist more as a minor incentive to keep grinding. "The game" however is still very much be played even long before about level 70, like you mention.
I fricking HATE themeparks, but i'm not going to lie... I can't stand RO's tile based, stacked enemy sprites, rubberbanding SHIT SHIT SHIT combat.
but seeing as we're never going to see any RO outside of it, dealing with the clusterfrick seems to be the cost of doing business. AI generated code/art save me!
by we you mean the devs? because its their fault, fully
I remember what the devs did when their servers were full of bots, dupes and spammers, and everyone pleaded for them to take action. They did nothing because it was a weekend and they were relaxing. Every week.
Sacred Altar, for a decade me and my friends through various guilds held that place. I miss those times.
>choose private server

>donate $100 to pinoy/BR GMs to get mjol, 'jards, sleips and LKH
>set up bot to farm berries
>roll champion
>set macro for asura spam
>enter pvp
Yep, it's RO time
>Do people still play this in current year?
Official servers? Yes, surprisingly. Your best bet are JP servers, though - it has the lowest amount of P2W and scammy management.
Private servers? Yes, but a year or two ago Gravity spooked all big ones due to lawsuits, and many of them shutdown (or at least temporarily - some of them rebranded, some are still planning to reopen)
>Has it aged bad?
Modern RO? Yeah, 4th classes (even 3rd classes, to be honest) doing everything with 50 damage skills and 30 passive skills by themselves killed the original idea of party play
Plus every dungeon is an instance now
Renewal was the obvious split between good and bad RO but it's the later updates that turned it from old Korean MMO into your typical rollercoaster MMO you see nowadays
Old RO? Nah, it's still good but you're obviously gonna run out of content to do at some point, and doing the same exact stuff but on different characters doesn't bring any excitement. RO was always about the journey, not destination, so without communication and making friends you'll just mindlessly grind things for no good reason. And the issue is that most of people don't have time or patience for such MMO anymore so it's gonna be hard to find people willing to play on some private server without tons of QoL features (that kinda kill all the challenge game had in the first place).
what server is Ganker playing on?
Ganker keep changing the server every 3 months or so because they keep dying again and again
Pretty sure current one is being ran by moronic dev who already bombed one last year
None. 4 autists isn't "/v/".
There's a number of Ganker autists always playing it, myself included. That said, /rog/ is camped by resident schizos whose only purpose in life is make up narratives about cliques, so avoid unless you've got a stomach for it.
That said, they do have a server running right now that is not controlled by the schizos.
Recently, a number of people were playing Midgard Legends but the server imploded after multiple item duplication exploits and rampant RMT that took place after.
Other than that, the big RO server in the west is UARO with peaks of over 1000 online but it's almost pure vanilla RO and hosted in Germany(?).
AdventureRO
Reminder that 2-2 classes killed the game.
Want to compete in MVP hunting? Better bring a Monk (and a Crusader).
Want to compete in WoE? Better have Bards, Dancers, Sages, Rogues, and Alchemists as a counter to Rogues (and a Crusader).
Want to effectively mob high end content? Better bring a Bard (and a Crusader) so your Wizards can spam.
They were not "alternative" classes; they were mandatory.
Opinion invalid on the grounds where Wizards are still top DPS for mobs, Priests are needed for all content and Knights are busted at all levels.
2-2 jobs are perfectly balanced specially considering how much harder they are to make builds for.
>alchemist LITERALLY can just afk farm 24/7 like a TOS-compliant bot
>perfectly balanced
Homunculus did not release for many years after 2-2 came out.
Yes but that doesn't change anything. And even before that, there was no real reason to make a Blacksmith over an Alchemist. Same with making Assassin over a Rogue since Rogues were essentially just better dagger Assassins with Triple Strike.
>afk farm
and let all the drops disappear? lol
Sex with lady tanee
For me it's Parasite.
>thousands of screenshots, over a decade worth of memories, lost, like tears in the rain
hold me bros
Depends, were you some town afkers or were you someone out in the fields, actually hunting?
I played this game so much, I literally did everything you can imagine, at least 3 times.
Including losing my virginity to some hot goth bawd I met ingame.
I doubt that, nobody mvp farms unless they absolutely have to
That's a strange example to pick, given that farming mvps was a pretty common thing for a lot of players.
he's a nobody larping as a veteran
Die in a fricking hole already troony schizos
it's sad that in a year or two when you mention ragnarok, people will think you mean snoy cinematic press X to win DLC slop
Buy an ad homosexual, your gay pony server is dead and you schizo trannies should have a nice day immediately
For me? It's Grand Chase.
It's on Steam btw.
ugly as frick artstyle
I've never played it. How p2w is it? The usual pay to save time?
Not as bad as Ragnarok or GunZ.
I played it on the Steam release and it took me 30 minutes to remember why I had dropped it.
It's so laggy that it's unplayable.
Really? I don't get lag at all.
Discord link?
Tried but bored out fast
In 20 years we will have zoomers posting about how the days of battle passes were the golden age of gayming lmao. MMO gays have stockholm syndrome
I still think it's one of the best MMOs ever made. Great character build customization, great soundtrack, nice designs, beautiful sprites...
...but it's not perfect. The excessive grinding can be a bit tiresome. They also needed to add something else to the game. Yeah the WoEs were nice and all, but it needed something extra, to maintain the interest of the audience. I don't know what, though.
Still, i will always love Ragnarok.
sexy fPriest thighs
Everytime i see these threads i know there will be lots of nostalgiagays, schizos from the general and tos Black folk.
That's why i avoid these threads you can't talk about the current state of Ragnarok Online, meme builds, it's lore or other content related to it without Black folk shitting on you.
Reminder that the last chance to ever play ToS with a large population was earlier this year and, if you missed it, it will never happen again.
The game is bad but it was fun for a while because of the huge population.
Why don't more vidyas do this isometric-ish 2d sprites in 3D world look? It ages super well and looks SOULful. All I can find are some obscure indies and those aren't MMOs.
Another thing I liked about RO was keeping maps relevant with rare drops, cards and hunting for cosmetics which were my favorite thing. A map was better than another for grinding depending on your build and gear too. I don't know if any MMO came close in terms of customizability and leveling journey to RO.
>Why don't more vidyas do this isometric-ish 2d sprites in 3D world look? It ages super well and looks SOULful
Tree of Savior models are actually 3D, only the heads are head drawn I believe. They're just really good quality and stylized.
I really hope ToS assets get reused for a better game, not even asking for an mmo but even a multiplayer to play with friends. It'd be too much of a waste to have that talent and effort go to waste.
ToS emulator will happen eventually. The base gameplay just feels too good.
Hopefully pservers could come out of it someday, or we get scorned devs to leak the source code again.
It definitely needs to come back. Getting tired of these pure 2D "inspired" indieslop these days that don't understand the designing principles of the games they're inspired from.
Yeah, for me, the customization in builds is the things that really sets Ragnarok apart from most other MMOs. The choice of distributing the points in whatever attribute you wanted whenever you leveled up, the equipments with or without card slots, and the cards themselves... it was absolutely brilliant from a build perspective. You can try out and explore several builds.
Most other MMOs i've seen like to lock the player to a cookie-cutter build.
2D sprites are time consuming, and PCs got powerful enough that you can go full 3D.
You are right that they are peak soul, falcom literally used Arcturus, RO's predecessor as an inspiration for their early/mid 00's game lineup.
>e-girlpantsu
lol this guy is still alive?
It's me.
I obviously quit ToS way back then in 2017. Came back to play the Papaya re release of the game and even remade the /vg/ guild for a solid 4 months.
Did rodelero win?
Rodeleros were burning trash in the old old, before ReBuild. And now, they are surprisingly one of the most solid options in the Swordie tree, so yeah Rodeleros won.
I personally held the #1 PvP rankings spot for several weeks while I played.
That said, I'd give anything to have old ToS back. It was still bad but we had a lot more freedom. The biggest sin of Tree of Savior is that they are too incompetent to fix or rebalance the game, so they keep making things dumbed and simpler and streamlined.
If you get to a point where you had to increase the maximum display number 3 times, you've obviously lost control of things.
Well when it comes to MMOs, "people" are what you get. There's no way around it.
>If you get to a point where you had to increase the maximum display number 3 times, you've obviously lost control of things.
why?
says who?
literally where is your basis for this opinion that you're touting as fact?
Can you tell the difference between 93944811702 damage and 1033392928722 damage when a dozen of these numbers pop up on the screen every second? Which of them, at a glance, makes you feel more powerful?
thank you for confirming you've never played the game because those numbers don't come up
cementing the fact that all anti-renewal shitposting is from people that don't even know what renewal is
Thank you for confirming that having huge numbers only serves to overwhelm you and renders them entirely meaningless. By the way, one of them is over ten times larger than the other, but if your ingame damage went from one to the other, you would not notice a difference in power. You would if you went from doing 900 to doing 9000 per hit.
you literally had no point nor argument and are sitting there shitting on your keyboard
you literally had no point nor argument and are sitting there shitting on your keyboard
NTA but the cornerstone of RO gameplay is mob control - not being overwhelmed, hunting at a constant rate, looking out for dangerous mobs, etc. Starting from 3rd job almost everyone got like, 15x15 9000% atk+matk AoE which trivialized that aspect of gameplay.
>but wizard
Wizard was balanced by having long-ass cast time on his most destructive skills. Enter warlock who can precast several spells and shit them out with impunity, also gets his own quasi-Asura.
? large population ?
There was a new server launched by Papaya play, separate from IMC's version of the game on Steam. It had several thousands of returning and new players on launch. That's what I was talking about.
The Steam servers have been completely decrepit since 2017 and the game has been in life support for all but the first years of its life.
Still the comfiest game I ever played.
I just played the DS one. It's kinda cute as a small slice of the real game but it's overall pretty shit, mostly due to all the padding
the game was peak mmos before WoW came along and turned them all into theme parks
You're late by 15 years. The game died around 2007 when WoW Vanilla got very popular and started stealing all the playerbases.
Rest in peace Gunbound
Rest in peace PSO
rest in peace RO
rest in peace fly for fun
rest in peace maple story
rest in peace old 2D runescape
don't forget S4 League
>gunbound
I only played for a few years until I got to ruby staff back when it was the hottest new thing, playing all random tanks and getting dragon or knight was the best fricking feeling
> peak mmos
from what perspective? from a gameplay perspective all these games were utter shit, the only reason you have any positive emotions about them is because you were a kid who didn't know shit
they were unique because the internet was a different place back end
>The game died
it's literally getting more and more popular by the day
shut the frick up doom zoomer
I played Gunbound until I got into a game where the enemy was using hacks to shoot during other player's turns
I knew even then that such a thing would only be possible if the devs were drooling morons who knew nothing about security
I actually think Renewal was a good idea and it fixed many more things than it ruined, but I also never got to see how crazy things got once 4th classes were added.
They never got to adressing the unsustainable powercreeping. With 4th jobs you're doing hits for billions of damage. The damage counter literally shows an M letter to show 10^6.
What I find funny is how the pre-renewal formula has too many exponential things (as seen in all those moronic ultra high rate servers), so if they hadn't done anything the numbers would have been even more inflated.
>nooooooo my 20 year old content needs to stay hard and relevant forever nooooo you can't add anything new or get stronger or have better content noooooooooooo
>BIGGER NUMBERS BAD!!
>BIG NUMBER GOOD!
>ME SMASH 999999999999999 GAZILLION!!
>ME STRONG!
Tbh, 4th is way better than 3rd jobs, 3rd already had some jobs doing M damage, all 4th did was let more jobs do it too which is good.
4th jobs are much better themselves, from a design standpoint. A lot of 4th job skills improve or scale of your 3rd job skills.
The worst thing about 3rd job was that every skill they had replaced everything you had before up until that point, except buffs. Your 1st and 2nd job damage skills would be entirely worthless.
nearly every 1st job damage skill was irrelevant besides a select few when you became 2nd job
what's your point exactly?
Literally not true.
>Bash still useful for stun
>Mammonite useful until you get Cart Termination
>Every Mage skill could be useful, or literally be all you had if Sage
>Taekwon kicks still useful as Star Gladiator
>Double Strafe is one of the best skills in the game, can put points on it right away as Archer
Only Thieves didn't have a 1st job damage skill worth a shit, and they had some of the best passives to make up for it.
>+40 FLEE and 5% movement speed
>anon doesn't know what the word "nearly" means, and literally picks out the few exceptions stated
how does it feel having a double digit IQ and no reading comprehension?
NTA but swordie/mage/archer/merchant are 4 of the 6 1st classes, the 2 remaining have mostly utility skills instead so instead of few, it's the majority of 1st classes
All people wanted is for them to fix the classic mechanics, not introduce generic % RPG mechanics.
That's what most MMOgays want.
I'm personally fine with max levels which then the new content would just be about level, boss designs, gear variety/balancing. But MMOgays would quickly get bored by those.
Retail is literally unplayable if you're new and so are most pservers. Unless you have extreme nostalgia and only want to play classic 99/70 pservers there's nothing to gain from playing this.
Am I the only one who remembers the original version of RO2? I feel like I dreamed the whole thing up at some point.
I played it too, during the Korean beta. Wasn't there a private server for it? I remember reading about it.
No you aren't, it had a rocking soundtrack which I can't recall if it was made by Yasunori Mitsuda. Anyways the beta builds looked pretty SOUL, but they really missed the mark with what made RO great and doubled down with the second RO2 as a wowclone.
>Yasunori Mitsuda
it was Yoko Kanno, probably better known for her anime compositions, in things going back as far as Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, GITs Standalone, etc.
Kanno is legit, responsible for some of my most remembered compositions from anime, and now I am interested in RO2's soundtrack.
Ah, thanks for the correction. I was confused with Yasunori Mitsuda who composed the track for another forgotten RO spiritual sequel, Lime Odyssey, which, also had an amazing soundtrack it had no business in having.
It's currently being worked on by dedicated autists. Look up Ymirheim. Was still in a playable beta state last I saw
That's actually cool, I probably shouldn't get hyped though since nothing ever gets finished in the post patreon internet
The whole RO2 development was a big mess so it's not weird.
I think there was 5 versions, at least. I kept close watch at the time but it's been so long I can't even tell what the frick was up anymore.
One which was the actual first, had a short, closed alpha that was Korea only with barely any content or areas, but it had its full OST made. This is like 2004? Not too long after RO1 first released.
Then they had to rebuild that because it a big mess architecturally or something like that, I recall it ran like complete shit at least for players, and this wasn't shown off at all IIRC.
Then that took so long that the game had become incredibly dated, visually and in terms of design.
So they came up with a whole new game that was just barely RO, and meant to appeal to the "new" audience of MMO players with multiple races and tons of new systems.
This was playable at a few game shows / conventions in Korea, at the very least. Got criticized for not being like RO at all except for the name. Only one race for example had the RO1 job system.
Then that too I think was heavily reworked into a new version that was re-RO-ified and this is what many international players remember as the original RO2 since it actually had an international beta.
THEN that too was scrapped and we got the version which would actually release, which was a stripped down WoW clone wearing an RO skin.
I am waiting for the time when we can run a private server with AI-filled players so we can simulate a full server back then.
That's the only way to kind of "go back".
Honestly at this point it's better to play JRPG simulating MMOs. .hack//GU is a pretty good one that captured the essence of internet
forum culture of the 00s.
The last I heard about this game was Ragnarok Labyrinth was getting another version called Ragnarok Labyrinth NFT which had... NFTs! So you can make fake money while you don't play.
Truly a statement.
Assassin or Rogue, which way Thiefman?
Depends on what you're capable of, assassins are pretty 1 trick in that you go crit katar build or the better dual wield build. private servers will make this vary since some frick with katars/sonic blow but you still tend to stick to those 2
While with rogue, plagarize opens up a ton of options if you can copy the skill, or you can just be a crappier archer with super flee, or be a mugger/backstabber with dagger or sword
Getting your Plagiarized skill overwritten can be really annoying though.
Also having access to double attack and tripple strike at the same time while using a bow in many cases meant you were actually a better Archer.
I coulda swore there was a way to lock your plagarized skill, or was that a stalker skill?
And fair point on the triple attack, double meant you had to use 1 slot on a sidewinder card, which depending on your bow could be a vital slot for something else
A Stalker skill, yeah.
Ah, that would be annoying until then yeah. Only gave rogue a try once, katar cirts are just too satisfying to give up, even if its suboptimal on most servers compared to carded out dualwielding
SinX is king.
No one can see you and you can spy on people erping in the wilderness.
Rogues have footprints so they can catch you if you accidently
>Rogues have footprints
That's only with the special undetectable hiding Stalker skill.
Standard salking left no footprints.
>someone adds Ragnarok music in their video
>feel a void in my chest that can never be filled
I want to go back...
I still play it. It's fun.
Is there a single player for RO, so I can play without being connected online?
You can run your own private server locally. It's normally a b***h to set up, but there should be pre-made setups available.
What's the appeal of crit Assassin when compared with Sonic Blow or Soul Breaker?
You can hit enemies.
le funny meme sounds and le funny meme icon that appears with every crit
More natural dodge due to higher PD, crits ignore def so your dmg is fairly consistent regardless of target.
Blow and especially breaker will be better once you can pump yourself with element/type bonuses and have good atk/hit
Also katar crits are just music to the ears. You can also build crit with dual wielded sword/daggers but its much harder generally
