Tactics is not part of the mainline franchise.
I really enjoyed it from a gameplay point of view but story-wise it's so-so.
Didn't stop Bethesda from stealing everything about the plot for ten different quests obviously.
Tactics oversteps bounds of the combat design. It became to tedious. Original Fallout is only good for 1 character control, if more it quickly becomes too time consuming.
they're all classics. if you plan to try the 3d ones, don't waste your time with the Bethesda ones as New Vegas is the only one made to feel similar to the original, by its original developers.
1 is excellent and has the best story/villain in the series but is the smallest in terms of scope.

Yeah they're a lot of fun, and BG3 proves people still have a tolerance for turn based combat. Fallout 1 is short and sweetand feels very focused, Fallout 2 is comparatively huge and all over the place - its got a lot of brilliant stuff (everything related to jet and its trade and influence over the bigger picture of the coast) but a lot of not so great stuff either like the entirety of San Francisco.

The vast majority of 2 is grounded political conflicts and then there's a few random character barks referencing pop culture. I can't remember a single reference in the main quests of redding, broken hills, or reno.

Niglet you have to be joking. One of the first npcs you come across is the street barker outside the brothel who is reciting the "we got white pussy, black pussy" speech from Dusk Till Dawn. And that's just the beginning, Reno is full of references.
The tutorial has never bothered me, but it's probably going to be more like 20-30 minutes if you're trying, as you should, to get the maximum amount of XP from the place, killing every enemy and disarming all those floor traps.
1 has an engine conversion mod that makes it play like fallout 2 and fixes all the bugs, with that it's a 5/5 star game. 2 is just meh but It's better with that cut content mod that gives all your followers unique sprites based on the armor they're wearing, the first time I ever played a max CHA character was with that mod. I don't really like fallout 2.
I know Fallout 2s humor is more in your face but consider that the game itself is 10x the content of Fallout 1. People really overstate how bothersome it really is. Also things that you're supposed to take seriously like the talking deathclaws should be more of the criticism laid against Fallout 2 than some one off 4th wall joke. Plus as brought up before, Fallout 1 is guilty of also having jokes and references in it.

I have around 500 hs in NV and always played on Very Hard Survival, never really had an issue in OWB, sure enemies were a bit spongier than in the base game, but nowhere near as an ammo dump as things like the hillbillies in 3's PL

This one has a few different options. Stalker has the same type of difficulty settings as fallout 3 and new vegas btw
Fallout 1 is tight and more balanced, you could finish it with any build without much hassle. Game is all killer, no filler, I could finish this game in one sitting.
Fallout 2 is a lot more combat focused, they put lots of mobs in random encounters. You'll get your ass fricked if you don't build your character properly. Lots of content though, could get at least 15-20 hours in.

1 is janky af and kind of 'small', with the storyline suddenly trying to be 'big' at the very end without really pulling it off. That said, it's got the best atmosphere out of any FO game - I would argue it's still the best example of what it would feel like to inhabit this world.
2 is the classic blockbuster sequel, taking everything from the first and making it bigger - in ever sense. Unfortunately, doing this means introducing more characters, more towns etc, which by its nature reduces the isolated feeling of the original. The dark humour that's in the original therefore also feels much more prevalent, but needs to be varied for the sake of size. So you end up with lots of the quirky shit that people find offputting. It's still worth your time though.
Tactics is shit, it misses the point and in my eyes carries a lot of responsiblity for the vague, confused state of the franchise today.

Yeah they're a lot of fun, and BG3 proves people still have a tolerance for turn based combat. Fallout 1 is short and sweetand feels very focused, Fallout 2 is comparatively huge and all over the place - its got a lot of brilliant stuff (everything related to jet and its trade and influence over the bigger picture of the coast) but a lot of not so great stuff either like the entirety of San Francisco.

The tutorial has never bothered me, but it's probably going to be more like 20-30 minutes if you're trying, as you should, to get the maximum amount of XP from the place, killing every enemy and disarming all those floor traps.

I only ever liked Tactics in realtime mode, on the LAN with my bro many a decades ago. Game is a pass solo when FO1/FO2 exist.
1 has an engine conversion mod that makes it play like fallout 2 and fixes all the bugs, with that it's a 5/5 star game. 2 is just meh but It's better with that cut content mod that gives all your followers unique sprites based on the armor they're wearing, the first time I ever played a max CHA character was with that mod. I don't really like fallout 2.
I know Fallout 2s humor is more in your face but consider that the game itself is 10x the content of Fallout 1. People really overstate how bothersome it really is. Also things that you're supposed to take seriously like the talking deathclaws should be more of the criticism laid against Fallout 2 than some one off 4th wall joke. I have around 500 hs in NV and always played on Very Hard Survival, never really had an issue in OWB, sure enemies were a bit spongier than in the base game, but nowhere near as an ammo dump as things like the hillbillies in 3's PL

This one has a few different options. Stalker has the same type of difficulty settings as fallout 3 and new vegas btw
Fallout 1 is tight and more balanced, you could finish it with any build without much hassle. Game is all killer, no filler, I could finish this game in one sitting.
Fallout 2 is a lot more combat focused, they put lots of mobs in random encounters. You'll get your ass fricked if you don't build your character properly. Lots of content though, could get at least 15-20 hours in.

It took me 20 hours to beat Fallout 1. By that logic, it gonna takes me more than 30 hours to beat fallout 2.
Yeah the game is actually surprisingly huge, and quests would get you trekking all across the map.
You'll never run out of combat encounters in Fallout 2, which sadly, pads out the game a bit.
You can get a car though, so that's cool.
1 and 2 are just fine, the only hurdle you have to get past is the intro two or three hours of each one. Tactics is a wash, into the trash it goes.

1 is janky af and kind of 'small', with the storyline suddenly trying to be 'big' at the very end without really pulling it off. That said, it's got the best atmosphere out of any FO game - I would argue it's still the best example of what it would feel like to inhabit this world.
2 is the classic blockbuster sequel, taking everything from the first and making it bigger - in ever sense. Unfortunately, doing this means introducing more characters, more towns etc, which by its nature reduces the isolated feeling of the original. The dark humour that's in the original therefore also feels much more prevalent, but needs to be varied for the sake of size. So you end up with lots of the quirky shit that people find offputting. It's still worth your time though.
Tactics is shit, it misses the point and in my eyes carries a lot of responsiblity for the vague, confused state of the franchise today.
