Do you agree that streaming games is a net cost for devs? I think for single player games, streamers should pay some royalty. Multiplayer probably not.

The only devs who should be upset about streaming are devs of things like visual novels, or certain JRPGs with heavy story and minimal gameplay, or AAA movie “””games”””, where watching a playthrough of the game is a decent substitute for actually owning the game yourself.

If streaming was a net cost to companies there wouldn't have been such a huge issue with undisclosed sponsorships on twitch that they had to change the site policy on sponsored streams, forcing people to label them as such in their titles. Hutchinson is just butthurt that more people go to streams to find out about new games than to his shitty blog site.

Lots of games wouldn't have gotten traction if not for streamers. It's simply a symbiotic relationship for free advertising.

It's a net negative for devs if those viewers are sated enough by virtue of watching the streamer play the game and not buying the game. There is a fairly strong case to make royalties forceable for singleplayer story games.

So if the devs didn't make a game it is a net lose for them.

In all honesty, at least in regards to myself, it's not game streams that are a net cost to devs, rather it's the let's plays on youtube. There's tons of games I didn't buy because I watched some guy play through it, so what would be the point of myself doing so? The only exception to this are games that will definitely have divergent paths depending on the choices you make, or RNG based like roguelikes.

You're an idiot to watch a streamer play a game like that when there's plenty of no-commentary youtube channels that let you get immersed into the game like a movie and just watch the story play out.

For AAA yes for the most part. For indie no unless it's shit.

I bought a few games I didn't even know existed because a streamer played it and it looked fun. I can imagine others doing the same.

Some games break the mold. FFXIV for example benefitted greatly from streamers.

I can see this working for story based games (like The Walking Dead), but it doesn't help his argument when developers already pay streamers to play their game in the first place.

For the life of me I don’t understand why devs, especially devs of indie and story titles, let streamers just play the game through while zoomers watch and then form an opinion of the game (fr fr that game be great, watched a stream no cap) and never buy it. At some point it’s not advertisement as the streamers claim.
