I enjoyed FFXIV until the FC I was in from the start imploded over gay drama. I just haven't been able to stomach the idea of being social and getting attached to people again. I know it's sad, but FFXIV was my only source of interaction as a disabled person and seeing my "family" stab each other in the back and throw all the memories away was traumatizing. Now I only play single player games.

It's not a 14 exclusive thing obviously, I've been in 5 guilds in WoW that have imploded (all but one were due to a woman, how odd!) until I stopped playing seriously at the end of WoTLK.

They all quit over time, some still come back for patches, others completely abandoned it
I've tried joining so many FCs since mid shadowbringers but they just don't hit like my og FC did
I used to spend hours near our small house just talking to people, now it feels like everyone is a zombie

I don’t understand how people socialize in MMOs. Maybe 20 years ago when the idea of being able to play a persistent online game with people from all over the world was new and novel, it would have been cool to make friends in an MMO. Maybe I’m too young to understand it. I can’t imagine actually making friends with someone over text chat in a video game. When I play MMOs I get in, see the content I wanna see and get out fast.

        Anonymous

Yeah that seems like a young person attitude. I will try to articulate how this happened for me.

So I feel like these days MMOs are 100% focused on the end game where you are max level and you do all the raids and what not. Devs these days simplify or streamline the leveling experience to get you there faster. Back in the old days I feel like the Devs really put a lot of thought into the leveling experience. Sure there was end game stuff but the real meat and potatoes was the journey as you leveled up. It took a while. After some time the grind gets a bit boring so you start talking to people and maybe party up. There were lots of quests that needed multiple people and you always found tons of folks just hanging around on the outskirts of such areas. This was before you could just queue up from anywhere so if you wanted to do a dungeon you would travel to it and wait outside for people to show up. It usually did not take too long but if we were like 3 outta 4 it was super common to just chat with each other.

I think another factor is we didn't really have the sheer choice you do now. Today you can pull up hundreds of games from any given genre. It makes sense to want to speed run content of a game when you have 30 other games lined up after it but back then I just...didn't. I would get home, get on WoW, and just do whatever. Sometimes I would sit in the undercity and just talk to random people also in the city and it was neat to have to defend Sylvanas every now and then. The thing is back then my choices for MMOs were WoW, of which there was nothing else like it at the time, or some free to play korean grindfest.

There was no cross server matchmaking either so if you did eventually get to the end game you would inevitably become familiar with your server's raiding community and every server was pretty unique in this regard but the thing is you pretty much HAD to socialize.

        >When I play MMOs I get in, see the content I wanna see and get out fast.
In older MMOs you actually needed to socialise with people to do said content, since there was no group or dungeon finder. And you couldn't fly throw it like an ADHD kid after drinking 2 cans of monster, since you often had to stop and rest to regen HP or MP, which naturally lead to people talking, doubly so since 2nd monitors and smartphones weren't around yet. Then you have other non-combat factors, such as fast travel either being extremely rear or requiring someone playing say, a druid or wizard to open a portal for you. There also weren't any server wide auction house/market board, so players usually made an unofficial trading zone somewhere in the world.

I feel ya, my FC is pretty much dead except for raid day on tuesday and maybe some stuff on the weekend, and even then there's barely a dozen people on.
I think I'm cursed every guild in an MMO I ever join dies or falls apart.

      >I enjoyed FFXIV until the FC I was in from the start imploded over gay drama.
I feel you. I came back to the game last year after a long break to find my FC in the middle of a mutiny. The frickers lost their mind over rank names of all things and because the FC leader was not playing because she just had irl shit going on. Last I saw, half the dipshits started a new FC after taking all the gil and mats and shit they could from the bank, and then disbanded after a month. The FC leader and two of her friends moved to OCE.
      So stupid.

This is the exact reason I have avoided any and ALL FCs for the past 10 years. They ALL involve cliques. They ALL involve some sort of drama at some point. They ALL have a handful of people at the top who look down on you, who will never give a frick about YOU, and will kick you from the FC if you much as make an emote in a way that upsets one of them or their bisexual e-lovers. Joining any FC at any time is like begging to get suspended or banned in an expedited fashion.

I'm an FC "Leader" but that was literally just so I could buy a house back in ARR before personal houses were introduced.
The only occupants in the FC are myself and a few friends who come back every now and again.
It's actually nice. I get airships and submarines and I don't need to share the spoils with anyone. I also own a personal small right next door so at least I get to feel like a land owner digitally.

The fc I was in imploded just the other day, Gay drama being the cause of course. The usual suspects infiltrated the officer team, and stabbed the fc leader in the back because they got called out on their troony bullshit by the FC leader. The feelings of an Officer’s friend got hurt and their ‘safe space’ endangered, and so the team burned down everything to not be in a “toxic” situation. I’m pretty sure the FC leader’s stance on trannies flipped because of what happened.

The Judasses created a new FC, and now I’m waiting for the same thing to happen again because they’ll just devour their own.

Tl;dr: FCs aren’t worth the brain damage, just find a nice static. You can filter out the trannies yourself.

In this case it’s particularly sad for the fc leader, she just wanted to enjoy the game, get an fc house to decorate, and it grew into a little community from there over the last expansion. She put a lot of time and effort in. I warned her when they started making demands: ‘inclusive safe space’ in fc recruitment message, pronouns in discord… but if she even considered saying no they shamed her for being a bad person. At that point I gave up on warning her, best learn the lesson the hard way.
She really thought these people were her friends, even met up with them a week ago.

But they do as they do: if you’re not with them you’re against them. They can’t create, only corrupt, and that’s an endless cycle so I’m sure we’ll be laughing at more drama soon.

Can't bring myself to leave my FC I've been with since the beginning that's essentially been taken over by new blood after the OGs have just kinda dialed things way back due to IRL/lack of interest.
The new people that have joined clearly clash with those that have been here since the beginning and the new leadership clearly isn't as good.
I've got 1 true friend here left who's a menhera, the rest I'm acquainted with. My actual friends are in their own FC elsewhere.
Had a really good time traveling to a different data center and just meeting people there / doing the usual for a couple months at the end of last year, the grass really was greener.

After my longtime FC since ARR fell apart end of Stormblood because of moronic drama shit, I haven't found one to replace it. Me and my friend hopped from FC to FC, even data center transferring to get a new pool of FCs. Nothing stuck.
He eventually found a GF on final, and now we have our own solo FC for buffs. I'm just kinda here as a third wheel with no one to talk to unless they are on, which is fine I guess. Just wish I could be in a big FC again where chat is popping and people are always trying to get content going no matter what time.

Small to midsized FCs that are very old tend to be close knit and have lots of discord chatter on the FC's channel. Old names are recognized on servers, nobody is going to join a new literal who FC.

Do content that requires communication, Eureka, Bojza, always people grouping up in those places. Go to rp venues and talk to people.
This last one I personally hate but apparently it's a universal across all mmo's now not just 14, but join discord, there are a bunch of discords for hunts, Baldesion arsenal runs, Bojza, for raiding. You can find people and friends from there, there's also the FC finder you can use on the lodestone.

Family is a bit too far, but they are definitely warm friends and drinking buddies. Because about once a week or so we do shit like maps while drunk/high and shoot the shit. If you do it for over 2 years, you end up closer to them than co/workers or fellow hobbyists or people you know from church or volunteering

You can play FFXIV without relying on a FC, party finder is great and the convenience of being able to play anytime you want instead of having to stick to a schedule is a lot more fun

        Anonymous

        >party finder is great
Nah it fricking sucks if you actually want to get shit done. People won’t be openly sociopathic like in League but if you feel like progging in PF, here is your typical Saturday:

Spend 45 minutes to fill in pf
2 of the players lied about their prog point
3 wipes to reach prog point
        1 wipe at prog point
        Group disbands
        45 minutes in pf….

You can blow an entire Saturday and get 3-5 pulls at your actual prog point. Playing even with extremely low skill casuals in a static is better, because instead you schedule 2 hours on a weekday, get 20 pulls at prog point, and when they finally learn it, you can put in on farm, rather continuously having to retrain new people. When your teammates get better, you actually share in the returns, even if it takes far more wipes total than in pf.

It sounds melodramatic and homosexual only if you’ve never experienced it I think. I was only in one guild in WoW since I joined from 2006-2013. At the time we were progging Throne of Thunder when our GM/Raid Lead was diagnosed with cancer. He was still going to lead us, as his only family was really his girlfriend and one irl friend at that point who both played with us. Couple weeks later one of our raiders admitted to our GM that his girlfriend was cheating on him with said raider, he said he felt super guilty after the cancer diagnosis was dropped on all of us but his girlfriend wanted to continue cheating. After that everything fell apart, him and the girlfriend never logged on again and pretty much the whole group lost all morale losing our raid lead of nearly 6 years because of some slag, everyone slowly stopped playing and moved on. After awhile I learned from his irl bud through Facebook that he died a little bit before WoD dropped. Since then, I’ve never wanted to join a guild again, losing 20 really good friends like that because of some douchebag who was looking for e-poon. That, and I fricking hate women.

It's not like the old days man, the genre is dying out there aren't many to choose from anymore.
There are only a few that are still being actively developed on and getting new content, and you can only play private servers of old MMOs for so long before you get bored.

It takes years and a truckload of manpower to make a new MMORPG
No company wants to take the risk, especially in the current climate of constant layoffs

It's strange that's all, ESO had it's 10 year anniversary, the producer for that game said it's brought in $2billion over it's lifetime and still bringing in over $200-$300million a year, but it's got almost no presence online? Maybe it does and I just haven't seen it, it is far harder to see anything about it than those other mmo's I see stuff about FF14 and WoW everywhere.

ESO does one thing right, gearing. It's horizontal in that you collect sets for their affixes like the MMOs were pre-wow. Everything is scaled to an item level so the set bonuses and gear collecting makes it feel like the rpg part of the MMO is present. It's just the combat is terrible as it's designed for consoles foremost.

Late reply is late, but good luck getting any GW2 thread to actually talk about the game.
30% of any given GW2 thread consists of Anon who haven't played in 10+ years whining about how it's shit, 30% is jaded oldgays who've never even played GW2 jerking-off the original, 30% are replies to obvious polbait which gets bitten by morons every single time, and like MAYBE 5-10% is actual discussion of the game itself in [current year]. I've played 15 years of WoW and 0 seconds of FF14 and will still die on the hill that you're wrong.

I tried WoW's Season of Discovery, and the entire time I leveled and played, I never had a single social interaction beyond a guy telling me to kill myself for looting a battered chest near Hogger that had 2 Silverleaf and some tough jerky.

You didn't do dungeons or group quests or anything?
After a couple runs of SFK as a healer helping people get their pre-bis, that was probably the first time in years I've actually had people add me to their friends list and ask me if I wanted to come play with them whenever I was on. Also got invited to a guild and got to do the raid with them.
My realm shriveled up and died anyways, but I had a lot of interactions in the first month.

I started after they raised the cap to 40, and while yes, I helped people and ran a few dungeons, everyone either left without a word or would simply say "see you guys around" or something tame.

Everyone's experiences vary wildly, but almost everyone I personally encountered was very much geared towards level cap and Gnomer, with no time on the way to stop and chat.
In that same regard, I saw an alarming number of multiboxers and bots on the way up also, which shocked me seeing as how populated the realms are.

            It is what it is.

Pre-WoW MMOs = Grouping is required.
WoW Classic = Grouping is not required, but heavily recommended.
WoW Retail = You can group or not, play however you want.
FF14 = Grouping is actively discouraged, most of the game is single-player story quests. You can't do these in a party.

There was this class that summoned different types of mushroom sentries, and another that summoned a pet that summoned its own pets that could heal, cast spells/buffs, and melee. That game had the best magic class I've ever played in a game. Now all we got are stagnant flavors of dps/healer/tank and nothing else and everyone is solo and there are cutscenes now? I doomed myself to not really care about endgame content, because I realized the gear in this game doesn't really matter outside of savage and ultimates

          Anonymous

I think for me how I handled the lack of grind, the grind is still there but it's handled differently. Let me explain. We all know getting Bis is relatively straight forward, get your gear in Savage or catch-up in Alliance, relic weapon through manderville.
But for me, I found the grind in getting the exact glam and armor for my guy.
Doing content specifically for glam, I really wanted the Warrior of light Paladin sword and shield to complete my Wol gear set from ARR,
I set up a group in PF for Seat of Sacrifive Ex, and got my gear and a mount after around 20 pulls, learned the fight and had fun.
I did Paglathan dungeon run for the Fending armour gear as it looks so fricking cool on my Warrior.
I'm saying I found my grind, and it's in getting gear sets that go with the exact look that I want for my guy, some of the gear is locked behind Savages and Extremes so I'm going through looking up specifically where to find the gear I want, set up PF's and grind it out. I've been having fun.

        but is it GOOD

Depends of what you're looking for. if you just want something that kinda, sorta, feels like a modern take on RO, it can be fun for a bit, even if it's just to check some locations and stuff. But it is REALLY a mobile MMO and if any hint of that is bad for you, then you'll hate it. I personally don't like it, but you can do whatever you want.

It is both an MMO and a Minecraft server called "Monumenta". The backbone of the game is an adventure through about twenty very large dungeons that take about four hours (average first clear time).
The big selling point of it compared to other Minecraft MMOs is how it still uses the strengths of Minecraft as a base game. Primarily Survival mode rather than Adventure. And it's purely PVE and Co-op. No PVP.
I've put hundreds of hours into it in the last few years. Hope you have fun if you try it out.

dang, a pvp/pve town/nation building minecraft mmo server I played in 2014 called atherys ascended was probably the coolest mmo I ever played with how sandboxy it was with player built towns and decently balanced fantasy classes, minecraft is still an underrated vehicle for mmos to be built in even 10 years later

This was my same experience with Waven. I jumped through the server issue loops, but eventually dropped it because I felt it lacked social interaction / community. It doesn't help that I'm not into gacha shit, and this game's gear/skill progression is gated behind gacha shit.

I highly recommend it if you have some friends who are also willing. The game was more or less designed to be played entirely through with friends. There isn't anything that's forced to be done solo. You can do every main quest, vocation quest, side quest with friends together, and everyone progresses. It's really neat. The classes are fun too. I never cared for dragon quest but I think I'm coming around because of X. It's a great game bros please play it.

That Anon is a moron or a liar. I am leaning on the latter, since no sensible person posts something like that and then ASKS FOR ADVICE ON Ganker AND says "/v/ros."
But at the same time, you are at the opposite end, being a jaded butthole demanding everyone else be as miserable as you.
It's fine to join guilds in any game.
It's fine to interact with people.
It's acceptable to form connections with people you find interesting.
And this is the important part, practice safe Internet usage.
Do not use heavily-moderated in-game chats to interact in vulgar, sexual, or creepy ways. You're just going to get slapped. Take that shit to private messaging platforms.
If you plan to interact with people, don't use overly vulgar character names unless they're at least a little funny. Buttsausage? Fine. BigDickRichard? Maybe. FrickingBastard? No.
Learn to take a step back and assess the situation. If something is too good to be true, it often is. Be patient, you can continue to be friendly and even loving and whatnot, but be cautious and look for red flags like money/image begging, dodging questions, broken English when a discussion gets complicated, etc.
          TL;DR: DON'T BE moronic.

The lack of quality of life most MMOs (or video games in general) have these days makes every achievement feel a little bit more special. It's probably why I gravitate towards older games in general.

Currently screwing around on a TERA private server (Starscape). Before that, it was catching-up on Vindictus after a 10+ year break, and before that, GW2.
It's still novel for now, as I didn't get to play much of TERA when it was officially alive. Although I can't help but feel a lurking sense of "what's the point" about pouring much time into it, since it's not as if there will ever be any truly new content added to the game at this point. Plus, the private server will forever be a full 1-2 years worth of major patches behind where the official servers ended (v100 instead of v110), which is kind of lame.
Genre's dead, so circling around the same old titles is just expected at this point.

I'll never use the short race after getting cucked out of a major item from a quest chain as a gnome because the huge ass boss monster died on slightly elevated platform causing it to be legitimately impossible for me to collect. It was at the end of a long ass group quest chain that the party I was with had no interest in going through it again.

Because that's more staff they gotta pay, more datacenter rent/utility bills they gotta pay, more localizer contractor costs they gotta pay
It's very expensive to bring an MMO to other territories.

Also, the domestic version might have collabs with brands/IPs that they'd also need to pay licensing for in the west and whereever else, and depending on who owns the distribution rights already for a given property outside of its home country that can be a headache legally and financially

COG just plain hated foreigners though, for MHF they actually had staff posing as foreigners to infiltrate groups hopping the IP block and they'd all get banned

Tab target mmo rotations sure. It's pretty different when you move on from that specific genre. The second you move to something that actually takes into account resistances, elements, and types of damage things become significantly more interesting.

I agree, more recent MMO figured themselves out of tab targeting (then again Gw2 came out shortly after Ff14 and still managed action combat)

              >More recent MMO's figured themselves out of tab targeting
Out of popularity as well, it's no coincidence the two most played and popular MMO's in the World use tab targeting.
Look at the state of New World, it's entire population plays on steam, it's a very recent MMO with Amazon money behind it, it uses more action focused combat and dropped tab targeting.
Like I said pic related is the entire population of New World, World wide as of two minutes ago.
You can look up the population for FF14 on steam, which is the smallest place for that game where people launch the game from(it has a dedicated launcher most of the player base use), and it has a population of 16k right now.

MMO combat needs to become more skillbased and less stat driven, they need to appeal to audiences that like high intensity action over standing around idling and doing mundane grindy shit like you guys are into.

MMOs died by trying to appeal to sweaty skillbased shit. Why would anyone looking for a skillbased game go to an mmo when they could just play league, valorant, csgo, etc. MMOs are at their best when combat is easy to get in to, but has a high enough ceiling to allow for creativity.

Dark souls is carried by its environments. It’s combat is mediocre, and it’s lore is nonsensical. Memorizing attack patterns to roll is just as much ddr, except with one solution to every pattern and harsh punishments for latency. Ugh.

If you're fine with the pace being closer to something like the 6th gen Ninja Gaiden titles rather than Souls, Vindictus fits that bill.
Current-year Vindi is honestly pretty great, right up until you hit the inevitable KMMO pay2win wall, and your equipment progression grinds to a halt. Fun stuff until then, at least. Its combat model has still yet to be topped, even a decade on (which is moreso telling of how agonizingly stagnant the genre has become, granted).

        Anonymous

The problem with vindictus is that it isn't really an MMO at all, it's just a lobby game where you queue for tiny instances all the time.
Someone should make something like New World but with good combat and mechanics.

          Anonymous

That's unfortunately true, but it's slim pickings when it comes to MMOs with actually-good combat out there.
Only real entry in the genre which MIGHT come close to the ideal of "good action combat + decent community which isn't entirely on Discord and actually uses in-game chat every now and then" is GW2, but that's obviously a pretty divisive title on these boards.
Generally speaking, however, you gotta choose one or the other. An MMO-feeling MMO with boring as hell combat like XIV, or something where combat is king at the expense of virtually everything else, such as in many KMMOs out there. Unless you're a FFXI chad, but good luck breaking into that title without an existing friends group or Linkshell to join for the ride.

            Anonymous

It's hard to go to a lobby game when you've experienced a seamless world full of players going about their business. Emergent interactions between players can happen in a seamless open world, conflicts that lead to pvp, hardships that lead to cooperation. That stuff can never happen in a lobby game.

              Anonymous

it's a big can of worms
              >PvP
unfair sides, ganking, mob tagging, disproportionate rewards, players collaborating on the server to trade PvP for the rewards
              >speaking of MOBs
how silly is that these enemies just stand around in the world doing nothing, they barely have any agency, they are just there for you to slaughter, most of the time effortlessly
              >hardships to coop
what hardships really? these mindless mobs? well if you increase their difficulty then you gotta decide if you still want to cater to solo or casual players
do you want to risk losing those players, those sales? what if people just blob up and steamroll whatever content there is in the open world(see guild wars 2 "trains")? how do you fix that?

I think open world is just a flawed design which is only propped up by novelties like the emergent interactions you mentioned, but most of the time the games are not built around those, they don't utilize those to enhance gameplay and those are just by-products of how the game works otherwise.

                Anonymous

Having some of those novel interactions is better than having none in a souless lobby game.
Most problems you've mentioned aren't inherent problems of an open world, for example it's not like you can't have npcs with agency in an open world.
Unfair sides and ganking in pvp is part of the fun, it's not an arena for arranged fights, it's a sporadic and ever shifting landscape. You need to take precautions, make arrangements and cooperate with others to gain advantages.
This kind of stuff is, or at least used to be the lifeblood of the genre until a bunch of no-fun PvE homosexuals showed up and made everything about killing dumb monsters by yourself.

but then they just split up to coordinated smaller groups and the content is always consumed by just one group of players at a time or if pvp is an option then maybe even fought over
some players might like it and some not, depending on what the content is then it even affects the ingame economy, leveling progress and so on

I don't see any problems with this really.

forgot to add: if you are decreasing the number of players that can engage in a specific content at a given time then aren't you making work like a lobby-based game already?

I'm not really decreasing their numbers though, just influencing their actions via the reward system.
Like if having 100 players for a world boss doesn't make the fight any easier or yield any more rewards than having 20 players, then 20 players would be a preferable group size. Perhaps the boss gets exponentially harder if there are more players fighting it making it impossible to defeat it unless there are around 20-30 players doing the fight. Guilds would need to band together to chase off other players or come to agreements on a turn order.
Shit like this makes a social game interesting.

But you do? Even in your example you are limiting the number to 20. Yeah sure the rest can go play PvP. If they want to, if PvP is even good, if they are not just trading the kill with the other guild.
honestly I feel like that a guild getting monopoly on this would be a huge issue and even cause loss of playerbase
I don't know, anon, I have yet to see a game with such deeply embedded social interactions to be greatly successful in the long run.
Also to turn back a bit, how does this necessitate the open world design anyway? I really feel like you are getting a lot of problems out of it, that then you have to solve and only getting a niché thing in return

I played EQ on Tallon Zek, I agree that is was very fun, but also really not suitable for modern mmo players and the level moderation they’ve come to expect. The nearest equivalent in modern gaming is Rust.

Most likely because you refuse to play the games the way they're meant to be played, you go in like a lone wolf and get shit on by people that party up and game the systems. Many such cases.

If you want this kind of ultra-griefing open world pvp, play rust. Adding to to a game like xiv would substantially reduce its player base (probably by over 90%).

I never said anything about XIV, it's a safe haven for lobby standing, erp spamming carebears that grind and queue instances all day. Those kinds of players aren't compatible with fun.

but why would a lobby game be soulless? see monster hunter hubs, a lobby could still act like any city in an open world mmo, it's just when you leave it you enter an instanced area better tailored to it's purpose, for example a 5 man dungeon with proper encounter and enemy difficulty tuned to 5 players. honestly it could even have an instanced open world like zone for those emergent pvp interactions, but it could be more contained and specifically made with that goal in mind
                >it's not like you can't have npcs with agency in an open world.
                Which MMOs have that?

yeah when the open world ONLINE gameplay was a new thing and most players were clueless idiots who had difficulty handling combat in a game like WoW

                >and most players were clueless idiots who had difficulty handling combat in a game like WoW
Combat difficulty in early WoW and most older games came from the numbers, not the mechanics. Sure there were some edge cases with kiting and such but in general you had to assess if your character was strong enough to take on a given encounter and if it was then you'd be fine as long as you pressed a couple buttons on time. People had difficulty assessing the encounters correctly. In time this was dumbed down to the extent that regular encounters didn't need to be assessed.

                >Combat difficulty in early WoW and most older games came from the numbers, not the mechanics

No, there were many more things that could occur and less ways to resolve those problems. Combat was slower, but because it was in a shared environment, you’d have pathing mobs, respawns, adds (yes, in old mmos mobs would stare dumbly as you massacred their friends and would gang up on you), etc. Also they would chase you forever, rather than for 40 yards before getting bored.

                >you’d have pathing mobs, respawns, adds
I'd argue that this is part of assessing the encounter. If you play a game for a bit you're bound to start learning this stuff and start considering it as you pull mobs. You spin your camera, pay attention to patrols, consider the respawn timers of the mobs you or others have killed recently.

Old games that had mobs follow you to the zoneline that fact made mispulls far more dangerous as being able to escape was less likely but that simply affects how you assess encounters.

so you could just kill dumb monsters by yourself the same if you assessed the encounter correctly
how is this unique to open world design anyway? in a lobby based game you could just gather a group, INTERACT with OTHER PLAYERS, and go together. no soul in that?

You're quoting someone else while replying to me so I don't quite follow. I didn't say anything about soul.

MMOs and lobby games are different. Soul or soulless is an entirely different discussion. I don't think a lobby game is inherently soulless. I'm personally a big fan of MH series and PSO. Modern lobby "MMO" games are pretty soulless though.

That's because modern "MMO" design is shit. It's true that the open world in games like XIV has no purpose because the game isn't designed to utilize it.

We need to go back to the open world focused design. No instances, those belong in lobby based games.

It's hard to go to a lobby game when you've experienced a seamless world full of players going about their business. Emergent interactions between players can happen in a seamless open world, conflicts that lead to pvp, hardships that lead to cooperation. That stuff can never happen in a lobby game.

Lobby games are an entirely different genre.

How is it even remotely an mmo?
        >can't do the story together, half the time you have to drop group for instances
        >entire story from arr to endwalker is running from one npc to the next, sometimes queueing a dungeon
At every turn this game removes incentive for playing with others, unless you are doing a dungeon or trial.

Content that incentivizes you to socialize with your fellow players and organically group together to solve collective struggles or quests. Even quests to kill basic monsters or farm some gear is more compelling than anything 14 does outside of eureka type content.

Let's use Dragon Quest 10 as an example
            >you can only have one profession on a character
            >past level 35, gear cannot be bought or obtained from vendors, it ONLY comes from crafting or world drops from killing shit
            >vocations actually have depth, the mmo trinity exists but there are jobs that excel at hybridization, or being pure support, and while you can just rent peoples characters as npcs, you are far better off actually playing with others in a group to kill things and do stuff efficiently
            >just being in a party with someone allows you to use their teleport locations
            >individual player value is cemented in the game
            >full fledged casino, that gives you bonuses for sitting in the same section as party members so you can go chill and play slots/roulette/video poker with people and chat
            >built in tycoon card game that you can challenge a friend to wherever and whenever
            >events that incentivize party play such as a slime hide and seek game where more people in your party generally results in a higher score and better rewards
14 does not do enough to encourage people to talk or interact in its world. Because, surprise surprise, it's world is FRICKING EMPTY AND DEAD BESIDES FATES.

Are you actually implying that final fantasy isn't weeby as frick? They're both jrpg franchises from the same fricking company. Fricking hell dragon quest 10 is literally on the crystal tools engine that 14 couldn't manage to develop some basic competency around and work with.
Why the frick should anyone give a single shit about relevancy or numbers? What the frick does that have to do with a game being good or not? Are you a soulless golem who just follows where the majority of people go? Are you incapable of forming your own opinion? What the frick is that argument besides pathetically weak? You reek of desperation to fit in and belong to a collective.
At no point did I ever remotely claim they were on the same level of popularity. I simply said 10 is better than xiv. Because it is. No amount of wowfugee influxes to bolster your numbers will ever change that. At the end of the day 14 is a tab target rotation based wowclone that does most things including the story, noticeably better than wow. But it's still a wowclone. And wow sucks.

I'm implying that only weebs play DragonQuest outside of Japan and that's a fact, the community is so small as to be completely irrelevent the game devs don't even bother localising the games anymore.
Meanwhile 14 might have been weeby, but it's broken that it's played outside of JP by none weebs, by people who traditionally hated the idea of a weeb game.
You have a very blinkered view of these two games, because you, a weeb only think of how they are perceived in Japan.

                >And also it keeps track of this connection between users (and also it tracks the site that you watch/open a video on, but that's not as new, you should always copy/paste links rather than opening them directly)

I haven't logged in for a couple months, but I keep my sub active just because I want to support it. At this point I hate FF14, but I will resub for DT because FF11 mentioned.

You can go to jeuno at any time of day and find hundreds of people still running ambuscade or chatting. it's objectively more lively for actual gameplay than limsa is.

    More or less yes.
Tried FF14 free trial, can only play around 0800 otherwise i have to wait in queues.
Tried GuildWars2, did the tutorial and deleted the game
Tried PSO2NG also dropped after getting to big city.
Now mostly play ESO. Im enjoying it.
Its like skyrim but with bigger map and not as sovl(I play it as a singleplayer game)
But yeah its been like a week since i last played ESO since ive been mainly occupied with arkham knight

ESO gaming, although the pain of not being able to find groups (or matchmake into even barely competent ones) makes me only log in for the dailies recently.

I played ff14 until endwalker, the intro bored me to tears and I'm not doing the same song and dance for the 5th time.
I played Eso for some time, and the open nature of the game makes me want to play it every other year or so, and with eso+ I get the missed dlc's for free, play them and move on in 2 months or so.
Now I'm playing GoW2, its the most mmo type mmo out of all modern mmo's at the moment. Really alive world with plenty of players on every map, so there's a lot of player interaction and map exploratio, more so in the dlc, is unmatched in the mmo sphere. But combat gets a bit stale(but thats for every mmo).

Thank you for reading my round up of the mmo's I played.

"don't worry guys dawntrail will be the holiday special with player choice that we've wanted for years!"
    >can't tell wuk lamat directly that i don't feel comfortable further meddling in politics
    >even if i did i don't know her or the general situation nearly enough to make this decision
    >brief hope when Graham Tea says i can just go along, explore, and decide later
    >queue cutscene where everyone just kind of acts like i'm going specifically to help Wuk Lamat and my character doesn't even get the chance to deny it
Dawntrail is already doomed to failure because it's going to try and be character-focused when we're already explored every inch of the Scion's characters. You can't have new characters do that because every expansion gets bogged down in the obligatory 'meet the locals' shit so much that it stops being remotely entertaining and they just blur together.

Where did they ever say player choice will matter in DT? Its always been the illusion of choice, where maybe 1 line is different. I mean the whole premise is that we are getting caught up in some political race with the scions split between opposing political parties. But honestly the politcal shit is going to pushed to the side halfway through for whatever the techno-Black person Phantasy star shit is.

they've been not so subtlty trying to make the player character more independent since HW and everything is clearly leading towards some fake choice in who we cooperate with in dawntrail

there is no good mmo's that arent super expensive

    wow
    >sub
    ff14
    >sub
    guild wars 2
    >buy to play
elder scrolls would be viable if it wasnt a shit game killed by level scaling content so that there is no progression.
    runescape
    >no gameplay
    any korean mmo
    >lma0 macro transactions
    >lma0 grind

maybe diablo 4, but its missing the massive part i like about mmos

I've recently started XIV, most of realm reborn was a chore until operation archon starts, then it gets fun. And then once I got to the updates between ARR and HW I really started liking it, the crystal tower raids and Extreme trials were great and the story was actually interesting, I was invested in the characters and the game didn't force me to go in a banquet quest for a bunch of buttholes

    I play FFXIV and FFXI.
In XI I sit in a buddies linkshell and help out. I have access to 3 characters that can fill any meta slot all nearly fully BIS with billions of gil invested in them. I think I spent a billion on dark matter augments alone. I hop on to help out newer players clear stuff and get them gear. In XIV I live in mentor roulette when works not making me clear up database problems and run tickets.

Off and on various MMOs throughout my life. I would love to settle down on one, but there is no such thing as a perfect game.
Runescape dominated my childhood, but I've done everything I wanted and put it down for good with fond memories.
Maplestory is a similar though less impactful, beat the Black Mage and called it good, Nexon sucks ass worse than any other MMO company I can think of.
A few others I have tried but never got too big on, City of Heroes/Villians, TERA, Maplestory 2, Warhammer Age of Reckoning, and a few early 2000s browser trash I can't remember the names of back in the day.
WoW and FFXIV I still play from time to time.

and Star Wars Galaxies and SWTOR. Surprised I forgot those 2.
Galaxies was great until SoE tried to turn it into another WoW and fricked it. SWTOR is pretty good for an honorary KotOR 3 and while I can't say I still play it I did like what I did even if it's just another WoW clone at the end of the day.
