Doom doesn't have vertical aiming. Don't know why you would need it

When the option is there, I like having it. It's not vanilla, but it's a such an insignificant change I wouldn't call it cheating.

Now, some ports (including the new official ones) allow a feature where the crosshair highlights when you point at an enemy, and I would consider that a bit of a cheat as that lets you artificially spot monsters in the dark, particularly the Spectres, which are SUPPOSED to be difficult to see.
That's the kind of thing where I feel like maybe it's a disability tool for helping people with really poor eyesight have a better shot at playing the game, which I'm fine with, but other people using it is a bit like a person with no physical disabilities or issues with walking using a wheelchair.

Doom doesn't need it, but I like having it for the odd occasion where I need to make long distance shots. Or if I'm playing with GzDoom, where I don't use auto-aim.

      >doom with crosshairs
What kind of Mickey Mouse shit is that?

People have been doing that since the 90s, because Quake had it and therefore it was put into Doom as soon as sourceports began.

Also the gun is right in the middle of the screen so there's no need.

        except
        a) most weapon sprites are off-center by a couple pixels
        b) weapons bob around all the time unless standing still

I like to use the ports that add it. But I don't like to use crosshair, just doesn't feel necessary with how extreme the auto-aim is. Being unable to move my characters neck seems to mess with my head and built in muscle memory.

Crosshairs that change colors depending on HP are pretty useful in heat of battle (no need to glance at HUD). Also if you go for more futuristic ones, then they might add to immersion.

No, but if a wad has them, I don't mind.

I like the one from the Bethesda/Woof ports where it changes colors when you're locked on to something.

It depends on the wad. I use it when freelook is allowed and without autoaim.

I don't consider it cheating since it was added in the Bethesda's port. Also, it doesn't give a significant advantage if you have autoaim enabled without freelook.

No but I don't think it helps that much for vanilla Doom where vertical aim placement either doesn't exist or doesn't matter in the case of freelook

Why's it matter? It basically has auto aim

Mainly because later shooters have them and it feels like a natural reference to have in a shooting game. Makes me more confident in long distance shots too.
Doom has auto-aim, but it's 95% for vertical assist, where you need it because no vertical looking, and it only VERY slightly assists you horizontally.

      I do if I want to and I don't if I don't

You should try getting a real personality instead of basing your identity on some artificial construct built out of what you think the other anonymous incel losers here think.

      I like your attitude.

Yeah, but the guns all point exactly where they going to shoot, so the combination of that and some horizontal aim assist make crosshairs just a visual preference. It really is just showing where the center of the screen is, not even where the bullets will go since there is so much auto-aim in Doom generally.

Part of it for me is that all the later shooters built those neural pathways of using the crosshairs for me over the decades, and with all the ports of Doom giving me the option it's what feels natural to me.
It's also that I sometimes play GzD and sometimes Woof, and the consistency feels better, even if it matters less for Woof. It doesn't intrude on classic or classic-like gameplay like some port options can do, so it's fine to me.

On the other hand, the guns point the direction, but the dot in the middle still gives a much clearer indication, which is nicer for playing fullscreen and with higher resolutions where the gun will be further away from the screen. Mind also how the gun sways back and forth as you move, with point of impact staying the same.
It also provides a consistent point of reference for the times custom .wads have replacement graphics which either aren't pointing clearly, or uses guns angled from the side like in later shooters.
That last one is thankfully less common in .wads (GzD or otherwise), people seem to have settled on the notion that centered sprites with centered projectile origins both handle better and fits Doom's aesthetic better.

This. It would probably drive me crazy how bullets don't even go where to cross hair is. Besides, you're supposed to be focusing on doing projectiles.

I like playing with the crosshair that changes color with how much health I have.

When the mod/wad I'm using doesn't have centered sprites, or when I'm using a gameplay mod and have autoaim disabled, yes.

crosshairs are nice because they prevent me from getting nausea

I don't have that problem myself, and this is the first time I've heard of it, but I can see why that would work for some people via the crosshair providing a visual grounding point to intermittently return focus onto with ass-hauling movement.

Why on Earth would someone need a crosshair in a game where vertical aim doesn't exist

It still indicates horizontal aim consistently, while guns will sway back and forth as you move, thus not always being a clear or reliable pointer.
