I get the feeling lots of gamers get a rush from understanding the "motivation" and "emotions" of each character. Furthermore it appears that many gamers like to think highly of their problem solving skills when they "follow" a "story".
All I can say is that you are homosexuals and esports requires higher level functions.
Either/or. Obviously it's not that sophisticated as far as dystopian sci-fi goes but it brings a few unique ideas to the table I M O. One of the few lores I'm autistic about.
The surface level stuff about an intergalactic empire vs a small rag tag resistance group is pretty generic. The sterilization field for example feels straight out of a 60s/70s dystopia novel.
The metanarrative stuff about linear game design and the illusion of player control is more interesting but it doesn't actually mean the story itself is interesting if that makes sense. It almost feels like an easter egg you discover once you examine the game a bit.
It's ok. I played through the whole series only a month ago and I avoided almost every spoiler so my reaction was pretty pure. Xen was alright. The teleporting stuff was alright. G-man is cool I guess. The combine is boring. Alien X didn't even register as a different group. The concept that there are like 4 different alien groups converging on earth at the same time is rather boring. The setting in the first game was based, but the setting in the second game is cringe. Overall great games with mid-to-boring lore. Vortigaunts are 'secretly villains' or something I bet. Don't trust em.

It was okay for its time, but it was getting rather obvious as Episode 3 kept getting delayed that Valve had no fricking clue where they were going and was just making up shit as they went along.
We'll likely never know why the G-man seems to have omnipotent powers, and yet still gets cucked by the combine and the vorties
It was mostly a non story though, the only important parts of the outline was confirming bree slug and g-man taking Alyx with him, something that they've kinda done now already with Half Life Alyx
Seriously though, how different would history be if a nine month pregnant Anne Frank had been teleported into the Xen borderworld by the G-Man during the Black Mesa Incident of May 16th, 200X?
Would she frolick among the fields of light stalks with the Chumtoads? Would the Vortigaunts worship her as a fertility goddess? Would the Nihilanth, impressed by the fearlessness of this pregnant israeli girl, bequeath her with the knowledge of his ancient and noble race? Would the Gonarch, recognizing Anne as a fellow mother-to-be, invite her into its lair and they share healing pool juice?
Would the crazed homicidal orange man with the crowbar attack Anne, assuming her to be another Xen monster, or would a brave US Marine Corps Corporal come to her rescue?
Not as much lore as the ideas and tone. Half-Life's writing was never that good but it has some compelling concepts and props them up with plenty of nice ambiguity and mystery.
so the only reason the combine didn't completely eradicate humanity during the 7hw was to get hold of black mesa's local teleportation technology? why didn't they just take it by force?
They also had interest in Earth's natural resources and potentially assimilating humanity into the combine empire. I always found it a little strange that the combine are unimaginably large and powerful and they're fricking with dark energy, have a dyson sphere, can manage interdimensional travel- but could never quite nail down local teleportation
>frickhuge interdimensional empire that assimilate every lifeform it encounters >defeated every country on earth in just 7 hours >earth is apparently being controlled by a skeleton crew
Are we important to the Combine? Why didn't they kill us all or turn us into stalkers?
Half Life 1 is a timeless game. Self contained, light on story but enough to make sense, even the gay meta stuff like "gman is the developers guiding the player etc" it works its cool. OP4 was great too gameplay wise adding to it.
I remember when HL2 came out I was totally struck by how different it felt. It wasn't like DOOM 1 to DOOM 2 or even DOOM 2 to DOOM 3. Suddenly it's like wtf, eastern Europe? But the source engine at the time was crazy. Physics was a new thing. HL2 and the episodes are basically like their own spin off series inspired by HL1. I remember when I was younger thinking the story was kind of generic but as I get older I appreciate it more and the intricacies. And it feels more relevant today weirdly enough. The combine are pretty cool aesthetically and their whole shit of being like an AI civilizayytion out of control absorbing shit. I like the dark forest take on the universe as a sci fi concept. Lore wise you can go deep and autistic on it which I like but it mostly serves fine as a backdrop for a cool low-sci fi fps action adventure campaign
hl1's gameplay to story quotient reminds me just a little bit of doom 2016 in that there are unskippable story sequences but they're few and far between and brief in the grand scheme of things
it's weird to me that more game don't go for that balance, like they're either heavier on setpieces and cutscenes or like doom and have none
I'm not a mouth breathing moron so no.
Why are you so mad about HL2?
its Alf
ignore him
Not doom world schizo?
I'm not a midwit so yes.
Xen in black mesa release was quite amazing
Do you mean the surface level stuff or the metanarrative stuff?

Cool. Do you have any favorite (dystopian) sci-fi that you find more rewarding?
i just valve never makes the meta stuff literal
*i just hope
i'm sleep deprived
yes

Interesting, I appreciate your opinion. Can you name your favorite sci-fi lores?
yes

You only have to look at the troglodytes involved in e-sports to know thats not true
I love it no matter what. suck my balls
Yes, yes I do very much.

Laidlaw had the story ready to go. It was Gaben and the other homosexuals at the top that didn't want to release the game.
It was mostly a non story though, the only important parts of the outline was confirming bree slug and g-man taking Alyx with him, something that they've kinda done now already with Half Life Alyx
The frick do you mean a non-story? The guy had the entire script ready.
I like it, it's a post apocalypse essentially but kind of comfy.
you wanna have out?
you people are fricking morons
i think it's cool i like it

Anne Frank tentacle rape in blastpit
Jesse what the frick are you talking about
she'd get headcrab zombied and that's a good thing!
op will always be a slave
hope you gays like gay shit
Yes, HL2 has one of the best hard sci-fi stories in vidya.
Not as much lore as the ideas and tone. Half-Life's writing was never that good but it has some compelling concepts and props them up with plenty of nice ambiguity and mystery.
this game is pretty much what got me into source games and fps's in general.

I puked on it,fsgr
I always read the combine as being like the borg, i.e., assimilating technology instead of independently inventing it
It's great game and it's impact always be marked in the industry, but it was terrible sequel and reboot
I get banned for having ideas
HL > HL2
hope you gays like gay shit
if it makes you feel any better I am literally homosexual, yes.
I liked its lore. Didn't really like Half Life Alyx as much though
wtf only black people can become combine??>?>
>get brainwashed and modified
half-life alyx muddies this a bit by having grunts still show plenty of personality post-modification
granted i like the grunts in alyx a lot more than any of the combine in HL2+episodes
Makes sense they still have a bit of humanity left until it gets wiped when they get a promo and all gone by the time they're an elite
>frickhuge interdimensional empire that assimilate every lifeform it encounters
>defeated every country on earth in just 7 hours
>earth is apparently being controlled by a skeleton crew
Are we important to the Combine? Why didn't they kill us all or turn us into stalkers?
>tfw we almost had cremators in HLA but it got scrapped, AGAIN
frick
How would avoiding them work in VR though?
its a revolutionary new gameplay technique-- you shoot them before they get close to you
Series almost as overrated as zelda
Not really, it's way to disjointed to make much sense. The first game and OpFor were a banger, still playing through them once in a while.
the characters suck

the cinematic meme has been a disaster for gaming
Yes, its fun and fit for purpose
