This may sound like a joke, but this is their end goal all along. Normalizing bestiality, pedophilia, necrophilia and every other evil.
And we can cross bestiality off that list now, seeing the reaction to the bear sex scene. Next is pedophilia (but only for brown people and white kids)

Only to extent. I was diagnosed 29 years ago, and I can certainly tell reality from fiction (was actually pretty good with that at a young age). Being autism though, I still can't help but treat in-game characters as if they're real in a way.

So to answer OP, if nothing else I do occasionally feel a bit uncomfortable making evil actions. Even with a bit of a silly game like fable 2, worst I usually do is fart in a crowd then flip the bird. Games like gta are a whole other thing though, give no fricks there.

NTA but you've never felt a disconnect between your own morality and what is portrayed as the "good" choice in a game?

In BG3, there is a guy who allows refugees to temporarily stay in his house, then wants to get rid of them.
The "good" choice is to side with the refugees whose logic is: "You have a big house and we have no house, so you should let us stay here."
The "bad" choice is to side with the house owner, whose logic is: "This is my house. Respect my decision to ask you to leave."

If you side with the refugees, they reward you with finding out the guy wanted them to leave because he was hiding something in his basement.
If you side with the home owner, you're forced to kill some guards and then you're forced to witness the refugees whine and be upset before they run away.

While it's understandable to feel bad for the refugees, the guy just wanted his house. Why lay it on the player so heavy?

          >If you side with the refugees, they reward you with finding out the guy wanted them to leave because he was hiding something in his basement.
It's not that simlpe. You can find out about the basement before having to make either choice about refugees, and you can easily rp that as the motivation for why you're getting involved.

Imagine being so fragile that a choice like that made you seethe. Choices are:
          >let them stay
          >why can't you work something out with them?
          >yeah they should get out
          >I don't want to get involved

You can find out about his basement with detect thoughts, a passive insight check, or by checking out material in his house. If you side with the refugees, you can also have to fight the guy's mercs, which is the other side of the guards being called.

It's such an even-handed interaction, with the only people who approves or disapproves either way are they big moralgays Karlach and Wyll, that I have no idea why you'd feel like the game was lecturing about your morality.

at least the first can stay rational
the problem is that you have all these "psychopaths" that appear on tv because they killed somekne or whatever, and those are the extremely insane ones

My favorite power fantasy is to do good deeds, be a goody-two-shoes until I get enough power to break the game. Then, I slowly start to betray everyone when it's convenient. Slowly go from picking only good choices to evil ones. So far, I don't know of any game that enables this behavior or acknowledges it. The closest thing is Planescape.

I usually just dont bother because it's almost always the most boring choice. The only evil path I can think of that was worth playing was ME2 renegade where you're legitimately just an unhinged dude who's self aware he's the protagonist so he has no issues doing things like kicking people off a 10 mile high balcony for a minor disagreement.

      Anonymous

Honestly being a renegade in ME isn't even evil, if you make all the bad choices you're basically just a highly effective soldier who is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure humanity dominates over the aliums.

Ruthless, but not really evil. Playing an evil character in Dragon Age Origins IIRC felt a lot more actually evil

Overlord everyone was evil even the heroes so even though you play a villain you still end up doing mostly good.

Different anon but Christianity isn't the most evil religion, at least not anymore, really, however there are a lot of faithful who use the religion as a shield the same way LGBT people use their ideals to deflect blame. On top of that there is a lot of "practice what you preach" violations committed all too often. I dislike organized religion in general and I wouldn't say Christianity is the worst but it has a bad rap and a lot of it is deserved.

Not the worst, just the most loud and annoying of ones that are generally bad. For one it promotes injustice. Romans 9:19 is a good summary of god's own hypocrisy, but there's a lot more in scripture philosophy I could complain about. There's also the real world harm one does by indoctrinating children with the idea of eternal damnation or fleecing the gullible out of their money with the false promise that god will return it several fold.

Take the notion of forgiveness that Christians extol. We're all sinners so we all need forgiveness. Sounds harmless at first right? But the foundation of that claim strips away at moral agency and actual fact based justice. It puts mother Theresa and jean of arc on the same level as John Wayne Gacy when judged by individual merit and not God's grace and the blood of christ.

I find that Isaiah 45:7 also sheds a light on god's "hypocrisy." God is a being that exists in a state of nonduality and legitimately can not be a hypocrite. The Bible was written by human beings earnestly attempting to understand god AND by people who insisted that they already knew the true nature of god and used it to enslave people. It's a confusing book that is unfortunately misused by a lot of people.

Take the notion of forgiveness that Christians extol. We're all sinners so we all need forgiveness. Sounds harmless at first right? But the foundation of that claim strips away at moral agency and actual fact based justice. I think you misunderstand the concept of grace or worse, the people preaching to you did. It isn't about forgiving people for unforgivable behavior. It's about forgiving yourself for things you hate yourself for doing and earnestly trying to rectify what you've done wrong.

Or let me put it this way, how is being a christian a threat to big money? When occupy wall street took place, they had it shut down and used race bait to keep the eyes off of them moving forwards. They own literally all the big media companies, so if they wanted Christianity gone, all they'd need to do is turn their army of useful idiot drones against it and it would be out.

There's also a matter of personal grudge. Kikies hate all the good things and that included white christians.
People that are contrarian to the israelite laws will always remain a threat, more so if they have any degree of integrity and organisation, that's christians, even if they're shallow believers.

Christianity is always more preferable than any other cult, including atheism, because it's the vanilla good with no effective downside.

Evil vs Good in RPGs should be Short term vs Long term. Doing the good thing should eventually have a payoff, but otherwise you should be able to get an inmediate. weaker, worse reward if you're a c**t.

I disagree, because then the player is still motivated by reward. A true morality test would be to consistently give a choice between what is profitable and what is right. Having good always be the best option from a metagame standpoint cheapens that.

this is the thing i hate the most about evil choices in most rpgs. it is always the inferior choice even though it is often the selfish and greedy option and should benefit you more than doing the "good" thing

Ridiculous. This is the mode of writing devs have been following for decades, and it's demonstrably terrible and not at all aligning with how evil acts usually shake out.
"Evil" is usually done in the name of long-term gain, while emotional people scream about it because they can only see what's in front of their nose.

well that depends on how the devs writes and designs those choices. Bioware and a lot of aRPG people will signpost things way too hard so the "evil choice", something like renegade shepard in ME, becomes a conscious effort on my part to be an butthole for fun and I'm not feeling guilty because I was actively seeking to frick with the NPCs and them getting fricked is funny and expected. I do feel bad sometimes in some games because I'll make a choice that seemed like a good option at the time but ends up being terrible for the characters involved.
Also it's outside the RPG-discourse boundaries but something that stuck with me is how bad I felt for killing the big daddies in bioshock back in the day because when you observe them and the sisters you can clearly see they care for each other and from their point of view you're a crack fiend trying to get a fix by cracking a little girl's skull open.

Kind of but it isn’t what forces me to be a good guy in video-games. What makes me do that is the fact that being evil usually has very small and insignificant benefits that locks you out of other content that is more worthwhile. This isn’t just a problem with BG3 but RPGs in general. Like there is no reason outside of role playing as captain evil of death island why you should side with the powder gangers at good springs in fallout new Vegas. Like wow, I just killed off an entire village of potentially useful services for the early game just so I can do hits for the powder gangers who I’m most likely going to kill off anyway!

I agree. Fable 1 did it right imo, simply because it never took itself too seriously. The characters all were pretty annoying so killing them never felt guilty (plus their deaths were goofy and cartoonish most of the time). Killing them gave you unique items and stealing also had basically no negative consequences while making the game easier.

BG3's early acts have a problem with the evil option being 'stupid evil' i.e. an act that benefits you in no way what whatsoever and is effectively the detached maliciousness of someone who knows they're playing a game.
    >Killing Karlach
Gets you nothing, loses you 8 feet of dumb loyal muscle.
    >Siding with the goblins
Killing the druids and the tieflings doesn't help you (it hinders you), no one at the camp even vaguely intimates they can or will help you in any way oh and they're all members of a cult specifically out to kill you.

I'm only interested in evil shit that helps me, not moronic murder hobo edginess.

      >BG3's early acts have a problem with the evil option being 'stupid evil' i.e. an act that benefits you in no way what whatsoever and is effectively the detached maliciousness of someone who knows they're playing a game.
that is perfectly fine and realistic. why shouldn't the player be able to just casually whack whoever he feels like? the way i see it, everyone should be murderable, no matter how important they are or unimportant they are. that's real role-playing. why put up arbitrary borders just because and then act like some pompous elitist c**t and be all like "noooo! you can't do that broooo! that's just being randomly and illogically ebiiil and doens't serve the plot at alll duuuuurrrrrrrr!!!".

        Anonymous

I didn't say you should be able to do it, you can and such people are justly 'rewarded' for being moron murder hobos by Larian as all GM's should.
I'm saying there are no smart evil options. You can't wrangle the Wyll/Karlach/succ situation to your benefit. The smart evil options (early on) are just 'I helped you give me more money' which is also fine but I want power.

          Anonymous

maybe the world is not yet ready for that kind of power? tyranny came sort of close, kind of, but that game didn't sell super well, so who knows.

      Anonymous

That's the thing though - the evil that does benefit you is subjective and there are plenty of options to do so. They just are written as obviously evil, because they aren't. It's called subjectivity and it's good that an RPG is written that way.

I feel Japanese games do this better. The Spirit of Eternity Sword allows you to rape your subordinates for your own pleasure (which gets you explicit sex scenes, and unlocks certain powers) and you're encouraged to commit massacres and so on for mana. Which is a not-insignificant resource in a wargame, too!
You get notably more powerful if you're evil. The evil campaign is shorter, but it's not exactly a bad one, you become a god-king.

unironically yes, but devs also condition you to do good even when given the choice. even when its without consequence like fable it just ends up being fart on them for 3g more so its just not worth it most of the time and since in other games your companions have pithy dialogue when you do it I tend to avoid it. Also, its like a no hit run kinda thing where when you pick one you never stray the path and 99% your first choice awards good boy points.

I am actually. In fact, I've started to see meta of such characters.
And vast majority of the time they are meant as cheap shock content, often with the author barely hidden wanking.
Yes, I'm perfectly aware that author made them killable, but that doesn't excuse writing them at all.
I'm not interested seeing dirt in muh fantasy world.

So I don't blame the fictional characters, I hold writers accountable for the crimes they written and would quite enjoy killing them IRL.

They need real good vs evil options, like a good option where you actually try to solve the root problem of the tiefling refugee crisis and then the evil one where you start a fake charity in their name and make millions of gold pocketing the donations.

I think Bioshock 1 handled it well as by the late game you got around 3500 Adam for rescuing every little sister and around 3800 Adam for harvesting every little sister. But rescuing gave you some extra ammo and plasmids, so it was arguably a better choice.

That's what a game with actual player choice would look like, but writing 28 different outcomes with far-reaching consequences for every little sidequest just isn't going to be possible with the state of current game devs. Most barely bother putting in 2.

I remember hearing about how dead space has an ai director in charge of controlling enemy popups and musical stings to create a more uniquely tailored and intense experience. • 9 months ago

For that to happen we'll need another 15-20 years of consumer electronics progress, the average pc is not strong enough to run all the processes video games do on top of a fit neural network that sorts out choices, definitely possible at a theoretical level though.

The more comfortable those kinds of people get around you, the more the mask slips, and it becomes very apparent that most things are games to them.

People doing evil things in games are psychopaths in real world and people who deny it are psychopaths who are capable of act on it.

        It's that simple.

So you guys play zero games with murder, fighting, etc on the grounds that people who do are psychopaths irl? Are you guys soccer moms or something? Smells like the "video games cause violence" crowd.

No, I love all kinds of violent video games. I just don't revel in torturing fictional characters. We aren't talking about violence, we're talking about cruelty.
I also want to be crystal clear that I don't think these sorts of outlets for cruel impulses should be done away with. I'm glad they exist. And I don't think that the people who do this kind of stuff are bad people per se, just that they likely have psychopathic tendencies.

No. You're willfully misunderstanding this. I figured it was pretty clear given the context of this thread that anon was talking about people who choose to be evil when provided the option to not be evil.

But I could have chosen not to shoot anyone, killing people in that sequence is optional. The whole level is skippable, too

            Anonymous

Well if you want to take it to its logical conclusion, I did actually outright refuse to play those games when they were popular because they're American military propaganda. I didn't even play any WW2 shooters because I found it in very poor taste that people were making video games out of a war my great grandfather fought in. So I guess in that regard I'm a soccer mom or whatever.

But getting away from that, I think you know exactly what that anon meant when they said that. People who go out of their way to be cruel in video games are obviously using it as an outlet.

              >blowhard nonsense response

I don't ever even play evil characters, but this projection is really sad. Some people want to see the outcomes, some people find dark humor in it, some people know it's a video game and can disassociate it from reality.

The fact is, your average shooter will have you pile up hundreds / thousands of corpses. It far outweighs any cruel moral choice you could make in these games, so even trying to make this point is honestly so laughable to me. In this attempt at psychoanalyzing people over their choices in a video game, you've somehow devalued the value of human lives that are supposedly surrogates for their cruelty.

I don't think people who don't play games like I do are bad people. At no point did I say that. I also think it's laughable that you think I'm devaluing human lives by merely having an opinion and choosing to not play certain video games. You're hysterical.

Fiction can be about bad things or even be openly morbidly evil without representing the views or desires of the reader. That is also unintelligent thinking. It's like how a lot of people thought Undertale calling them a bad person for comitting genocide was a personal insult to them as a person and not just a part of the story. Silly.

                Anonymous

I think it's one thing when fiction is about those things and another thing entirely when fiction allows you to fully inhabit an evil role. I realize that might be a bit pedantic of me, but I just have to say that I've come to this conclusion after having met people who love to be evil in games. I'm of course silly for spending this much time on this discussion on Ganker, but I'm no dummy.

And Grand Theft Auto is teaching our children to murder prostitutes for bonus points. Come on now. A lot of the people doing evil playthroughs of RPGs are merely testing the limits of what the game will account for. Or they're just choosing to perversely play the role of villain. A lot of them have already done or will go on to do a "morally sound" playthrough as well.

No, because modern devs are self-righteous imbeciles unable to get me invested in the setting. The good vs evil debate makes sense when being evil is more profitable, and you have to forego material compensation to do the right thing. Motivations for this can be either purely out of duty or maybe empathy, assuming the entire cast of chars aren't just unlikable dickwads and writer's pets.
Since dickwad NPCs sadly seems the common thing now, I tend to just do the evil thing for financial gain, which in the current day translates to: be a duplicitous psychopath that does the thing the imbecilic devs want in each case (be that "good" or "evil"), max out the reward, and then afterwards molotov the NPCs once the cutscene is over.
I still tend to be moral if the game deserves it, for example in Planescape Torment.

What bothers me about Karlach is that she just feels like a mary sue character. She has 8 int, but she doesn't talk like it at all. The shit about having an infernal engine in her chest just seems so over the top, I can't get why they did it

But she's also a pleasant character, since you get matched with 3 evil characters right from the start she's honestly kind of welcome

      Anonymous

8 int doesnt mean you're a Neanderthal, it means you lack critical thinking and may not process information as fast or well as others. Karlach is exactly like that. 10 int is the average human int so 8 is just under and you have people with sub 100iq talking fine. If you look into things in the Nine Hells and the infernal machinery, the engine thing is not wild at all when you have monster trucks powered off souls with beating hearts and shit.

        Anonymous

Yeah i know that the engine is pre-existing, but this insanely strong tiefling that has one stuck in her body? And she's literally on fire most of the time as a result, but can withstand And everyone thinks she's super cool and she's a good person actually and Wyll was completely wrong to want to kill her.

Every NPC likes her and has good things to say. Even Lez, our resident b***h, is jizzing over her. It's so strange.

If she was in a DMC game or something I'd think she was pretty cool, but in context of this setting she feels like one writer's favorite OC.

And the way she speaks, giving detailed instructions on how to kill demons, and the intricacies of devils? It just doesn't feel right. I know that there were rewrites on parts of the story, so I'd believe it if her stat block change was arbitrary.

I have even worse news, Anon. The game is based on a satanic dice ritual called "Dungeons & Dragons".

Why would I need to imply observable reality? It's not like we're talking about welding oil rigs together, moron. Women have been involved in creative industries for hundreds of years.

But there's a girl in that photo? What exactly are you trying to prove? Sure, they were not there as often as today because they were not mandated to be there by shareholders, but they were there, those that actually wanted to work in the gamedev and create shit. Just like Amy Hening did, which is why game journos hated her so much and scum like cuckmann ultimately ousted her from the company.

yeah, I have far too much empathy. It effects even my fictional life. The hardest part of act 3 is knocking out all the red shirts and not accidentally killing them.

Try to play it off as character building and growth
    >Play Dark Urge
    >Try to balance good and evil, slightly leaning towards the latter
    >Decide to kill grove as the first major act of evil
    >Think nothing of it
    >Go back for loot and other stuff I missed
    >See the hidden cave with all the dead kids in there, one of them I saved and wrote about how much of a hero my character was
    >Kill every goblin I see on sight

That would turn in to a gay fanfic very quick, go in to the ruins that are near the starting zone, get the lich from the cript, he will make it possible to hire mercenaries who are braindead but at least wont assault you all the time

This confused me too. The meticulous attention to detail spent everywhere else and then your voice options are
