Do you guys still sell/buy games from places like MegaMedia exchange or your local game store?

Do you guys still sell/buy games from places like MegaMedia exchange or your local game store? Or are you mainly doing most of your game purchasing and selling on the internet? I took some old shitty games like lego Batman on the PS2 and some PS1 games to mega media and I got ripped off I’m sure, but I feel like I would have invested more time and made less money selling them online anyways. What do you guys do with games you don’t want anymore?

Getting back into collecting, my local mega media (thought this was a local chain in wisconsin? Didn’t realize their were more?) has the same stuff as eBay prices. Not trying to get a bunch of stuff (just the basics) and it’s cheaper then eBay for common stuff because no shipping fees

Pic related, paid $16 after tax yesterday, if I bought these on eBay it would have been like $25 after shipping

Not a bad haul, and are you from the Midwest? I’m in Wisconsin, which is why I said mega media. The ones in my city are hit or miss, they either have good stuff and it’s priced well, OR they have total dogshit and the stuff that’s good, is way too expensive.

I’m in Milwaukee, that was in mega media Brookfield yesterday, they had the best selection I’ve seen in years there (I don’t go there often at all) and some decent prices. Gonna hit up the Brady street and Franklin location next weekend.

There's a place near where I live that I kind of want to check out but I assume it'll just be shitty inventory and high prices that I could find cheaper online.
Also I like the internet age where I don't physically have to go into stores because I have social anxiety or whatever.

As far as buying: I buy some stuff at my local game store just because I like the folks that work there and it usually is slightly cheaper than ebay prices with shipping.
Though I've sold 90% of my collection and now have flashcarts now for GBC/GBA/N64/SNES/Megadrive/DS and I have a hacked Wii and 3DS and a MCFB PS2 with OPL so really the only thing I'm still buying for is the PS1, but I'm going to dump those eventually and get an XStation modded PS1 (and possibly a ODE modded Dreamcast) and that will be the end of my collecting days for retro consoles.

But I've had really good experiences buying and selling on Ebay, the biggest problem now is that pinhead Biden changed the tax laws so Ebay now reports anything more than 700 bucks to the IRS (it used to be 10K or 20K or something really high so in years when I sold literal thousands I would just declare like 200 bucks in net sales and the IRS would be happy). So while I've haven't run into many scammers on Ebay nowadays I'll usually just take it to the local mom and pop game store and get like 50% of it's pricecharting value in cash just to avoid dealing with the tax bullshit, since ebay takes 10%, then it gets taxed as income so like another big chunk, then shipping materials and my time and all that crap. I'll just take the cash, frick it, I sold most of my big ticket items years ago any way.

So to really answer OPs question, most local shops will offer you between 30%-50% of the game's actual value, and on Ebay you're way likely to get the pricecharting full value from the buyer with them covering the shipping on top of that. But like I said, Ebay takes 10% off the top and then you'll need to declare it on your taxes unless you're just selling a handful of games, so depending on your income tax burden it may or may not be worth your time. Facebook marketplace or going to like a swap event might be the best of both worlds, but that also just seems like a lot of work.

I use to get everything from my local store because their prices were fricking unbeatable, always like 40% off ebay prices. But ever since the plague, their prices have gone up a bit, plus they moved locations so im no longer literally passing them 2 times a day and have to make an actual decision to head over to them. They know me there so i still call in to see if they got any stuff in id want and i still get some occasional stuff from the owner (traded in a bunch of empty DS cases for a copy of Super Tempo). The other shop i went to, the owner who always gave me great deals or even would just le me pay him next time im there, fricking died from the T-Virus and his son who was going to reopen the store hasn't done so yet.

But ive actually been getting more games then usual now because ive gone full Jap on the stuff i still want and im confident enough on my 1st grade rune skills that i can navigate the bit of text that is there. Unless i get a good deal, im probably done with any US version of a game that costs over $50 if the jap version is significantly cheaper and fortunately theres not many games i was missing i wanted pre 2020 anyway so my collecting to play spending will probably be ramping down. Like for the snes the only big boy money game i still kinda want is Robotrek just because its the last US rpg for the system i never played and i want to experience the localization (played the Slapstick version before) I will admit that one is more like a "completing a set" acquisition for me.

My store does 25% off boxing day sales and the same for your birthday month.

Given that they price at market value, it's the only time I really shop there but I usually drop a good chunk of change when I do.

The only place I'll buy games at is the Mexican swapmeets here in California. Still some cheap prices over there. Picked up a NES with 2 controllers, zapper, Mega Man 2, Contra, and SMB3 for $50 last weekend. Time to scalp

    >hole in the wall game stores used to sometimes have really rare stuff for competitive prices
    >now even if they do have something obscure or rare they know what they have and often times you are better off going to Amazon or Ebay

It still makes me a bit sad. Some of the fun I used to have in hunting rare games was finding places in my state I had never visited before for the out of the way GameStop or Disc Replay that just happened to have that one 100 dollar game for 30 or 40 bucks. Honestly, the best deal I scored in the last 5 or 6 years was at a Half Price Books of all places.

local game stores are pretty much dead now.

or even worse, just check ebay prices at checkout, which has happened to me twice. i dont even bother with them anymore

      >shelves of shovelware, picked clean by the owner and sold online
      >No, I didn't just go in the back to my computer and check ebay! I did some research real quick and it's 80 dollars! That's a steal right now!

I've been to a card/collectible store before and witnessed some guy asking the price of a card and the clerk said to check their website. Customer said it wasn't listed, so then the clerk, like he was annoyed, told him to check another website, tcgplayer(sells single cards, has market data, whatever), for the store's price

I mostly still buy from stores instead of online. There's a couple of GameXchange stores in my area they're not bad price wise.
There's two stores in the mall one of them is a 2nd & Charles store whose game section is pretty pathetic and has been overtook by Funko Pop shit. The other store in the mall is a place called GameOn but they're way too overpriced. They want like 8 dollars for shit like Madden 01 on the PS2.

I visited a local game store I'd been going to for 12 years a couple weeks ago and it was kinda depressing. Their stock was drying up really bad early last year, likely due to them actually having reasonable prices, so they're overstocked with a bunch of overpriced shit. Also I don't know if the old employees who were there for years were layed off due to COVID but they now have a rotating cast of bumbling fricks and zoomers TikTok chicks. I used to see the owner semi frequently and he even recognized me but he doesn't seem to visit often. I miss when pic related chick worked there, it's all been downhill since then.

If it's anything from the last twenty years I go thrifting. The local pawn shop has some great stuff from the N64 thru the wii era of Nintendo. Anything older I go online. Note that I live fairly rural so it's all I can do to assure quality and cheap

I hit ebay on high-dollar items because I can usually snipe them at a lower cost, but I still browse my local shops all the time. Find tons of great $5-$20 stuff worth playing, some of which seems like no one's ever heard of.

We have two local used game stores and one small chain store

The oldest one sucks dick, they put their disc-onlies in doner cases and print fake labels out on some laser printer then charge CiB prices for them

Next oldest one is actually pretty great. All the rare shit in the cases is wildly overpriced but they have a good selection of cheap stuff from just about every console, they have a system set up where they list stuff online but it's also on the shelf (when someone buys it on ebay they run and take it off the shelf, dunno if this has bit anyone in the ass yet) so there's still shit worth finding. They pretty frequently get new stuff in, too.

Last one has decent prices but the people running it are pretty psycho.

I have a few retro resellers near me. I used to go to one all the time, because they had fair pricing, IE under market value and sometimes a fair amount under market value. I hit up the other local shops infrequently because the prices weren't as good. I left collecting in the dust this year. I was going to sell all my crap on eBay, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle and just trucked it all up to the retro store in some boxes. Probably took a little beating but who cares, really. Mods and everdrives are the solution I chose, which is another hassle in some way, but at least it quickly reaches a conclusion. I never had any illusions about my games being "investments", they were there for me and my friends and family to play. The retro market gets treated like a real market and you can track trends in it, but, it's entirely dictated by autismo collectors and the small army of morons who unknowingly push the market when they go "hmm, $60 dollars for Smash 64, seems fair". The market is squarely planted at the intersection of dumbass and weirdo, and I just didn't wanna participate anymore. There are so many better things to spend money on, life doesn't go on forever, and for me I knew it would just always be a money pit--a quick way to misplace 60 dollars here, 100 dollars there, etc. Now I play whatever I want and whenever. It's nice!

There is one place near me, I called them and asked if they had a certain game and got it priced on the phone. It was 10 dollars cheaper then what it was going for online so I went in there and the guy at the counter looked it up online and then tried to charge me slightly more than what it was going for online. When I told the guy I was quoted a price on the phone he didn't believe me until the other worker finally fessed up and said he gave me the quote on the phone, so they gave it to me for that price. I left a yelp review explaining what happened and not to trust their pricing and the guy responded all pissed off like "hurrrr we gave you the game for the price we said we would on the phone".

I check my local retro stores for deals every other day. Their prices are essentially set by a panel of drunken monkeys.
Sometimes I'll find a $200 game for $10, but most of the time they have $10 games for $50-$100.
Just the other day I nabbed a copy of Fatal Frame II with prerelease cover art for loose disc price, though. It pays to keep checking.

Nice. A lot of resellers and retail shops seem extremely confused when it comes to pricing PCE, TG16, SCD, DC, 3DO and OG Xbox games. I tend to see them way under or over priced.
Old PC games are also all over the place.

I’m pretty much done collecting but most of it was done on eBay. There’s a handful of retro game stores in my state but they’ve all pretty much dried up, at least as far as stuff I’m interested in goes.
I imported just about all of my stuff from Japan and would have been fine using Yahoo Auctions, but I just so happened to find comparable or even better deals on everything I wanted on eBay, sometimes from the same seller. I’ve also got a handful of EverDrives now, so buying more games just doesn’t seem worth it to me anymore.

I’ll still bum around a used game store every now and then but prices really have gotten absurd across the board except for some PS1 stuff and most PS2, PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
