he created a game in which the cartridge had a way to detect light levels, and that had an impact on the game. the concept was briefly lauded when the game came out, but it wasn't some commercial/consumer hit or whatever.

The existence of boktai has nothing to do with how pretentious his tweet is. Claiming a stealth or delivery game is going against the grain when they are among the most popular activities to do in any game is ridiculous. Boktai was truly a new game idea, it was also completely moronic because you couldn't see the fricking game boy screen outdoors. He is fully in his own ass at this point.

Do people unironically not know about Boktai anymore?? I felt like because it was so unique and out of left field for Kojimbo zoomers would know it too.

barely anybody knew about it then, either. it was released when gaming was still a relatively uninvaded hobby. gaming magazines were still a thing.

Nobody acknowledges him for going against any grain when he made a stealth or delivery game. All he was famous for was trying to make cinematic games which was such a common desire it's now a point of shame. He is right about boktai, boktai was also a stupid idea, the fact that OD draws any parallels to it is not a positive.

kojima is acknowledged for a ton of shit other than what you say. idgaf about this gay, the delivery game is fricking gay, mgs1 is overrated, mgs2 is great, mgs3 is shit, mgs4 is boring, and mgs5 is ok until it gets so repetitive it's not worth playing anymore, but the guy is and has been celebrated and 'acknowledged' for invention and challenging creativity for decades, whether he deserves it or not.

Castle Wolfenstein does not have any of the hallmarks of a stealth game, such as an alert state or the ability to hide until behaviours reset.
It does have the ability to use uniforms the blend in, a social stealth element that forms the basis of the Hitman games, but that isn’t what defines stealth games in general.

His cutscenes are poorly directed, if he released a film it would get terrible ratings and make no money. He is elevated by the low standards in the game industry and by the relatively savvy, younger audience finding him ironically hilarious.

The "groundbreaking" parts of the game were the walking mechanics and the strand link system, both of which were really refinements of existing gameplay elements. As cool as it was seeing people structures and messages in my world when I really needed the help, its just an elaboration of the Dark Souls messaging system. No matter what the game did or didn't innovate, he was always gonna huff his own farts - people have been telling him he's gods gift to gaming for almost 25 years now, and hanging around hollywood egomaniacs for years wasn't going to help that.
I think its interesting, though, that he was called a prophet for predicting the pandemic since the game came out right before it, and his reply was something like "If I was actually able to see the future, I would have created a more financially successful game." He isn't completely unaware of his own cult of personality

It's a poorly translated tweet, he was just saying he put in items like camera, sniper rifle and nikita that would switch perspective to allow for deeper gameplay. i.e: you can go first person and navigate the space rather than using only third person.
the word "invented" fricks up the whole sentence and gives it different meaning

I can see how thats impressive compared to the always top down perspective of the 2D games, but was this really the first game that let you switch view perspectives? I have a hard time believing that, even as someone who played this as an 8 year old on release

Only game off the top pf my head that does the same thing is OoT, which came out a few months later, but I’m sure there was earlier stuff.

Only game i could think of off the top of my head was Syphon Filter, and that came out in 99. This really might have been the first game to let you go from fixed camera to 3rd person, if only by a slim margin of a few months

Super Mario 64 came out in 1996 and lets you do the same thing. I’m sure there are several PC games that beat these to the punch, too.

That isn’t used as an aspect of gameplay, just an optional view switch.

Being able to clearly see shit in first person, that may have otherwise been hidden by the wonky camera, is a pretty important gameplay mechanic if you ask me anon

It probably wasn't the first game that did it which is why I think the word invented is a mistranslation of some kind. He probably meant that he came up with the idea, even if he wasn't the first to think of it.
Kojima speaks limited english and probably just filters all his tweets through google translate for his english audience

The ghost photos were a cool idea, MGS1 is full of amazing things and really deserves all the praise it gets
MGS2 likewise pushed the envelope both from a game design perspective (muh ice cubes) and from a storytelling perspective
It pains me to say it but MGS stopped being an innovative series with 3 and became a lot more straight forward in it's approach to storytelling and gameplay.

That’s just the plain truth. MGS4 and V were still fun but nowhere near as novel as the first three MGS games were.

When you look at interviews with other lead game devs that live outside the spotlight and don't show off to marketers and social media, they tend to mention their fellow staff and their contributions to the development. They'll single out a staff member crediting them exclusively for a character design or something.
Or as they get on years they happily sit back into producer roles and let younger and more enthusiastic staff take over directing and other leadership roles.
And then there's this guy who takes all credit for everything he ever directed and despite being an old piece of shit is still fricking about in his director's position and even going into live action programs.

gacha game where instead of pulling for waifus you pull for NFTs, and there's some kind of referral system where whenever you buy the premium currency the person who referred you gets 10% of the currency you bought, the person who referred them gets 10% of the currency they received as a referral comission etc etc... (can accumulate as decimal values as it goes higher up the chain as needed, so even if someone buys 100 currency they get 90, their referrer gets 9, their referrer gets .9, their referrer gets .09, etc... so there's big incentive to make your friends and family play and buy currency so that you can get more

The fact that most "innovations" and ideas he came up with were just iterations on what already existed before tells us more about the sad state of this industry than his own ego. But then again he was neither a rebel he wants to see himself as, nor a trendsetter he considers himself.

Kojima's innovations, in his own mind. And we're supposed to just blindly accept that, especially when his own creations barely got iterated on by others.

Is there a game that actually portrays a visually impaired character momentarily losing their glasses?
I get ideas of an action horror game where maybe for a brief segment that lasts like two minutes at least, the player loses their vision and a very extreme depth of field affect is placed on screen, on top of hud being completely gone.
The segment would need to be super short to not be annoying but still tense and different enough to excite the player.

Forgot to mention but the object during this sjort segment is just to get your glasses back and its a life or death situation JUST for the glasses. Obviously inspired by joseph from evil within.

randomly went down some reply chain. this board is so unbelievably mentally ill. and not the innocently I'll type. the "no grasp on reality, but insists their delusions are actually completely rational because they have no capacity for looking inward from an outside perspective and making an objective judgement" kind of mentally ill. the types also that say therapy isn't working when they don't remotely participate during sessions. the uniquely moronic type that just happens to have a mental illness that exacerbates that moronation.

Reverse Souls. Like dark souls, but you have to build unfair dungeon and make people die in them. The goal is to not make it completely unfair, because the invaders can rate your dungeon and unattractive dungeons won't lure in many invaders that would die and feed you souls. You would be able to rent rooms in your dungeon to monsters and other players, to defend it for you. I would call the game Dungeon Master
