Just wondering but why is it possible to spot ai images like these in under a second

          Anonymous

The biggest reason is that they're unique from the stuff people have been making in the past. And since we're humans who have seen trillions of images and have gained immense familiarity with them, it's easy to tell when something is dramatically different from what came before. Then you notice the quality of the image, how on top of being unique it's usually full rendered which is rare for art. And then you notice the errors in the images.
After some time we start to recognize AI stylistic choices and the new art styles it's created too.

            Anonymous

            Makes sense, thanks

              Anonymous

np. Another interesting thing I want to mention is that because people are so buttblasted about AI art, we've all been paying more attention to art in general. It's really funny when people call out human made art as if it was AI because it has some weird errors. So even though we can generally recognize AI art(as long as it's stylized characters or architecture anyway), we can't always tell.

This too. Make me feel like I'm actually on a different planet / universe and I don't give a damn what time period it is, make aliens great again instead of just retextured human #6, in fact if you had a medieval world but with giant arachnids and megafauna that were all sentient and the society actually was built to accommodate them instead of them just being brainless mobs dying to self-insert humanoids it would be great.

No. But I do dislike Forgotten Realms. Not because of it being European-inspired (European fantasy is kino) but because of it being a shoddily-made kitchen sink fantasy setting full of all sorts of chaotically thrown in crap.

  12. 9 months ago

There's no such thing as fantasy fatigue, there's only such thing as shitty fantasy. If people were making games and movies that looked like Frazetta artwork, nobody would be like "aboo aboo too much fantasy". No, instead people are making games that look like the shitty nufantasy pioneered by the troons over at DnD and early 2000s Bioware, and everyone is fricking tired of it.
Fromshit games are only a hit because they are the only fantasy titles that manage to embrace some of the aesthetic points of 1980s fantasy and scifi.
The last good fantasy game we got was Vagrant Story.

      Anonymous

Based. I'd love to see a game set in something more like an old pulp fantasy setting with an art style to match. Same goes for sci-fi too. There's a whole treasure trove of inspirations there just waiting for someone to pick them up.

The quintessential fantasy artist is Frank Frazetta, he defined literally every depiction of Conan the Barbarian ever after. There was a new artbook put out collecting his stuff just recently.
For sci-fi, your go-to guy is Chris Foss

No. Elden Ring showed me the medieval fantasy still has a lot of mileage going for it, they just need to do more unique things that only VIDEO GAMES can do like actually side with one faction against the other instead of allowing the player to do quests for both factions with no consequences (Volcano Manor vs Roundtable Hold). Absolute dogshit.

In a way I know what op means. How many times can I be force-fed a Tolkien derivative when none of them come anywhere close to LoTR's setting? I prefer the setting of a game like mass effect vastly more than any game with elves and dwarves. I think the only one that even comes close is Warhammer because the elves and dwarves are the most mundane shit there and not the dull, uninspired selling point.

Fantasy is like better reality, you cannot get bored of it because it's more interesting by default.
You can get bored of same old gameplay, uncreatively safe stories, slow and poor storytelling, lack of interactivity etc.
Industry (AAA and AA studios) needs another jump in quality, not just graphics, this is universal problem
in all vidya genres. Best you have are some indie games and some rare AA studios fighting for their place,
but they simply lack the polish and size of content from larger studios, and larger studios always play it safe because investment money.

I think fantasy, which is mostly RPGs, needs good serious writing back that you had in the media from the 80s,
treat players as adults and write stories that are gripping and where you feel that bad choices don't immediately ruin your run,
but make it interesting and unique, regardless of setting. Today, even in games that are supposed to be dark fantasy, writing is censored and
ideas are dumbed down, making it feel like it's a cartoon for little kids that just so happenes to have some blood in it, god forbid any serious topics and touchy subjects.

even people in bum frick nowhere organized events that required them to travel to cities so they could frick prostitutes
      every small town had hoes

there are written recounts where apparently some farmers would come together to come up with bullshit reasons why they regularly needed to go to towns when their only goal was to bang prostitutes and they wanted to do it more regularly than was actually required for them to visit a place to sell their shit
like as in literate recorded peasants coming together to organize this shit and spread word about the stuff they should make up to tell their wives and fathers explaining this to their sons
basically every place to sell goods had prostitutes just to the side so after selling ur shit u could go frick some b***hes with the money

so incredibly common to do but kept hush hush between men so women didn't find out

You mean the same question of what it means to be a human and the defining characteristics of life, which have been rewritten 1000's of different times with the same answer? With Aliens that are shallowly designed around proving a philosophical point the author wants to hamfist? I like old school scifi that has something original to say or delivers its message in a grounded non-fantastical way, but that's like finding needles in a haystack if you are looking at the past 20 years of Science Fiction in any media.

If you think a genre repeating the same themes that Assimov and Clarke have done over, over, over over, and over again in a successively worse fashion than the original you are missing the point the genre should be.
The thing with fantasy is you have a clean slate to mess up with or succeed upon and create your own original themes and settings. Stuff like the oppression of an evil empire, Dragons, & Magic are common but are definitely not the entire genre unlike science fiction.

The entire concept of low fantasy lit is about diluting those themes, making morality more grey, and while having stuff like magic exist it being a less almighty existence.

There's nothing stopping a fantasy story from exploring any of those same questions, in fact many do. They just use fantasy elements as ciphers for real world people and conflicts. And as much as you can claim that "scifi" started as a genre focused on exploring questions of the future and human condition, many popular things called scifi now are just as shallow as your example of a fantasy story, only the set dressing is different.

Both genres are involve people interacting with things that don't currently exist, the only real difference between fantasy and scifi is that one explores the human condition via looking at the past and what things societies used to believe in, while the other explores the human condition via looking at the future and society's current beliefs and trajectory.

Just as like "shitty European castles that are just a wall and a single tower and three houses" are turned into these massive citadels in fantasy... the same kinda upgrade can be given to African culture. Not everything is Savannah tribes, Africa had a lot of kingdoms with decently sized cities before colonialism came along.

    >It's one of the reasons I still cling to Morrowind, a land where people live inside carapaces in a volcanic desert, where wizards fall from the sky, and where public transport is dominated by large, adorable bugs. And it's proof that you don't need to toss out every single familiar element just to make a place feel alien. You've still got your prophecies, lots of lots of elves, schools of magic—but it never stops being delightfully weird. Mind you, getting rid of some of those things would still be welcome.

lmao no you are incredibly ignorant. Modern fantasy has existed for hundreds of years. The wizard of Oz is a fantasy tale that came out multiple decades before LoTR. Ever heard of it? Guess not because you're a fricking idiot. If your shit has dwarves and elves in it, then it is a Tolkien derivative. It can barely even be called fantasy because obviously you didn't fantasize about the setting very much when you stole your races from some guy who did it way better 100 years ago.

Orcs are a Tolkien invention and the most clear thing to point to, not existing before he made them up.
Elves as superior immortal human type is Tolkien, but not the Elf in a more fairy/Elb sense.
Dwarfs predate his works and are fairly close to folklore. .. although the size is less clear and there can be giant dwarfs and much smaller ones.
In both Elf and Dwarf case occasionally a clear line of distinction to fairies might not be possible.

Yes as small not necessarily completely physically solid type, the human-size bodybuilder-orc archetype is however distinctly based on Tolkien derivatives.
In general Tolkien created the Star Trek of fantasy, aliens or other races being something a human with some makeup could play.
This is not the case for folklore, in this regard a Japanese fantasy setting with yokai (e.g. Nøkken and Kappa) is much closer in principle to medieval Europe than this is the case for Tolkien fantasy Europe.

The first game's time travel happens because of Manus, not the player or any other ally. The second game's "time travel" is entering into the memories of long deceased giants who didn't know Gwyn. The third game isn't so much time travel as time is broken. I honestly think that would have been a pretty cool spectacle to see in all the smashed together lands some fragment of the Kiln of the First Flame right as Gwyn links the fire and then killing him. There are more grimdark, edgy "subversions" of genuine Fantasy than there are actual works of genuine Fantasy. In other words, we get more Dark Souls than we do Elder Scrolls IV; Oblivion.

Nope. In fact it's been a while since I've enjoyed a truly fantasy realm and I wish there was more.

What I am tired of a bit is D&D/etc. becoming so self referential and idk what the word for this is but super-hero high fantasy. I do not and have never given a flying frick about Owlbears and I don't particularly like them in concept because they are innately non-serious. fantasy is extremely varied and if you are just dumping entire sub genres together I have 0 interest in your opinion based on a lack of knowledge on the genre
the difference between high fantasy and low fantasy is massive, let alone dark fantasy, medieval fantasy, grimdark, and plenty of other unique settings
since this mentions bg3, look at larians last game dos2, where elves are cannibalistic and eat the hearts of their dead and are far from beautiful perfect humans with pointy ears, or the various other unique races, landscapes, and story

no shit bg3 is going to feel samey, its straight up using a lot of the dnd setting that already exists and its deliberately incredibly generic
this wouldn't be an issue if this spastic was actually interested in fantasy instead of just playing the largest games around and seeing a lot of mass appeal targeted worlds

There are more interesting settings to make an RPG game besides medieval fantasy settings in the first place. There's no "fatigue" when it comes to the genre itself. There's fatigue to shittily written stories in the genre.

It's easier to make a shitty medieval fantasy story than it is to make a good one. All you have to do is simply just not do any research on the time period and not build clear rules for how things like magic are supposed to work and evolve in your world.

I assure you that if someone were to put some actual effort in trying to string their world together, it'd actually sell. Baldur's Gate 3 already did despite them barely holding their story and ideas within together, but it still did since there was at least some feeling of things making sense. Take The Witcher Netflix show in comparison with this and you'll see what it all falls apart since that piece of shit doesn't even follow it's own rules made in the books. It doesn't know what it was to do, it just simply exists.

I love the weird 80s sci-fi/fantasy mashup in the first Phantasy Star. The sequels went much harder on the sci-fi elements and never quite captured the same feel.
    >be random Camineet citizen
    >live in a prefabricated carbon-nanotube dome at the edge of a casual-use space port protected by 50 foot high plasteel defensive walls
    >want to visit my bronze-smithing cousin in the primitivist collective in the next town over
    >cancel plan, forgot the forest is enchanted with disorientation magic, and our wise and benevolent ruler King Lashiec banned the sale of compasses last year
    >decide instead to do some relaxing fishing in the nearby port town instead
    >have to walk 30 miles to get there, there are no roads between cities and a vehicle costs more than I make in a decade
    >fend off swarms of eye-bats, giant scorpions, ghosts, and the occasional dark wizard
    >I really need to save up and buy a laser sword one of these days
    >finally arrive, most beneficent and gracious King Lashiec banned all the boats too
    >can't fish at the beach because I would be shredded and devoured by deep ones

I honestly always hated this. Felt like some kid dumped all his toys out on the carpet and made some haphazard plot together while he was playing with them. What it really was code monkeys in the 80’s putting some low effort story together to hinge the gameplay on. No vision, no congruity, no extensive thought or logic, just a hellish mixmash of 80’s anachronisms

Fantasy literature is literally the most postmodern genre there is, it is cheap, mass produced, derivative and aims to put the masses into a sense of stupor by presenting the same familiar situations over and over. There is nothing traditional about it, in fact its explosion in popularity coincides with the rise of consumerism as the dominant culture of the western world.

If by weird, they mean they want another setting like Morrowind or Planescape? Are companies willing to make games in a weird setting? Are the mass consumer bases investors want with these big titles willing to give a chance to a weird setting?

More to the point, do these games journalists even genuinely want a weird setting? Or are they actually asking for something else? Creating a simple civilization is easiest in stable fairly warm conditions without harsh winters and natural transport, e.g. pic related.
Once you get people dying off if you don't plan for changing seasons you're forcing K-selection and long-term planing.

I couldn't get into this. Neither the plot, the cultivation, or the fight scenes were compelling enough for me to stick with it. And the main character acted like a total psychopath (even by Xianxia standards), who I was completely unable to empathize with.
I remember how he hated his brother and called him a hypocrite for being the stereotypical knight in shining armor who wanted to help people.
I remember how he butchered innocent people for 1% power gains.
I remember how he bullied, extorted, and murdered his classmates.
And I remember how he baited innocent farmers into attacking him, so that he could slaughter half of them, and then blackmail / extort the other half into doing his bidding.
I just...didn't see the point in it. The whole story feel spiteful to me.

I have burger fantasy fatigue. This is what I like to call medieval-derived fantasy handled by Americans. I firmly believe that due to America not actually having any connection to that period of history, be it literature, architecture, mythology, historical figures, etc, Americans are largely incapable of producing fantasy above the level of a renaissance fair. Baldur’s Gate 3 is just the latest and most grotesque example of this. The Japanese can manage it (Dark Souls, Elden Ring), the Europeans can manage it (Witcher series), but the Americans write fantasy like a group of cosplayers discussing their modern San Franciscan sex lives and how much they fricking love science.

Witcher, while being fairly lowbrow, does at least succeed in creating a certain degree of verisimilitude in how it presents its world and characters. Modern American content like DnD in its present state is just some disgusting veneer of garish cosplay aesthetics skinned over characters acting like modern teenagers in what is supposed to be a fantasy medieval milieu. It never, ever succeeds in being in any way transportive or immersive.

Obviously Sub-Saharan Africans have a history (it's literally impossible not to, it's not an achievement) but how much of what's in that image is from west Africa where black Americans are from? The only one I don't recognize is the stone wall on the top left, the rest of the buildings are mosques and the tower is an Ethiopian stele.
West Africa has a few things but the only serious notable old building is the Grand Mosque of Djenne and we have almost no clue when it was built, by whom and if it was rebuilt at some point because nobody wrote anything down. We got one mention of what we're pretty sure was it in a 13th century work by an Arab and then nothing until the 19th century when a Frenchman saw it. And the mosque isn't even in Sub-Saharan west Africa, it's in Mali.
The Zulus and some other tribes from down in west Sub-Saharan Africa have an interesting history but nearly all anyone knows of it is through European interactions with them because they never wrote anything down and never built any permanent structures.

Its hilariously an argument against any Black history existing, when leftists use "MUH GREAT MOSQUE OF DJENNE" as an example of greatest Black architectural engineering
This is a small fort made out of mud
And they have to add new wet mud to it every year or else it falls down, you can see this on documentaries such as the Human Planet.
Also, this fort was built in 1907.
