Long and plodding levels, no challenge whatsoever, and an aesthetic that goes out of it's way to embarrass you as much as possible for playing it. No thanks.
The Switch game is pretty much the Yoshi's Island I always wanted except it doesn't have the look. None of the boring underground levels or mazes and just crazy ideas one after another
The problem is even though it can be described as "crayon" art style it isn't as simple as just "video game that looks like crayons" and every time Nintendo's tried to do the same thing on later systems they went too hard on the realistic artsy look.
Yoshi's Island doesn't look like a drawing on paper with crayons, it looks like an episode of Ed Edd n Eddy or something. It has a unique style that is reminiscent of colorful crayon drawings but doesn't lean on that idea at all. It still looks like a living breathing world.
I finished it but wouldn't say I enjoyed it. I only completed it due to pure autism. The game is too way long to sustain the barely passable platforming physics and getting 100% in every level isn't very fun after all, just painful. All that said, it's at least better than the DS sequel.
To a degree. I will rarely ever leap to this title though unless I suddenly feel a very specific interest for it. Meanwhile I will effortlessly slide in Super Mario World without a single second thought. Whether I'm sitting down for a whole gaming session, just lying back and relaxing for a couple minutes with my handheld, or testing a new controller/display/etc, SMW is one of my easy picks to just jump right in and start playing.
Yoshi's Island is a frustrating game because playing it casually as an adult is too easy, but going for the 100% is infuriating. There are some many bad decisions, like Shy Guys carrying red coins that disappear forever, points of no return, autoscrollers, etc. At least the aesthetic is amazing and the sheer amount of content and SOVL is unmatched on SNES.
I agree. It's one of my favorite games, but every time I try to 100% I stop around the second world or maybe the beginning of the third. The flying red coins are the worst and using the +10 stars at the end of the level feels like cheating (even though it's not).
Yes, I love it. The only thing I hate in the game is that the gameplay goes against the idea of collecting stuff. The one way doors is a very stupid mechanic.
>unique egg throwing mechanic >vore boss >boss that, when you remove his pants, dies of embarassment >over the top final boss song >nightmare fuel transformations into a car or a helicopter >nightmare fuel in general >while it has a "baby aesthetic" i'm pretty sure the intention was "naive art", which is a "visual art style characterized by a childlike simplicity and frankness". so it's a style, not an indication of who it was directed at. >touch fuzzy, get dizzy
idk, i feel like yoshi's island is the knuckles chaotix of the mario franchise, except it's a complete game instead of a half assed demo because sega was moronic.
there's a lot of stuff you could nitpick, but overall i think it's a solid game. i think it's worth playing. i guess this game's nearest neighbor would be DKC, and i think this game is more fun, whereas DKC has fewer things you can do and fewer gimmicks. i think it's also worth nothing yoshi's island doesn't recycle a single boss.
I just wish getting a score other than 100 was meaningful. Like having the bonus levels unlock when you have an average score in the world of 95 or something. It would improve the game by a lot.
>flying shy guy red coins
I agree it's a bit annoying but most of them give you enough time to react.
It adds tension and that's not bad.
Hate their little "hahaha" laughter when they fly away though lol
I love it
Could never get into SMW (didn't even finish it) but I 100% Yoshi's Island
Too bad all other Yoshi games are nowhere near as good (even if some of them have neat concepts and ideas)
I love its gestalt. The level design doesn't do its beautiful presentation any justice and sometimes even makes it look rather boring
It's the ultimate proof that Miyamoto >>> Tezuka. It meanders way too much and desperately needed some Shiggy deliberation/calculation
>It meanders way too much and desperately needed some Shiggy deliberation/calculation
Please elaborate anon. I'm curious what you mean.
Long and plodding levels, no challenge whatsoever, and an aesthetic that goes out of it's way to embarrass you as much as possible for playing it. No thanks.
Weak Mario, still one of the best platformers ever and a timeless style
>and an aesthetic that goes out of it's way to embarrass you as much as possible for playing it
You sound very moronic

It's weird that Nintendo didn't do more with the crayon art style. It was way ahead of its time. Yoshi 64 looks horrible in comparison
It was perfect for SNES, garbage for the 3D era
There's Kirby Dream Land 3. Too bad it plays like crap.
The problem is even though it can be described as "crayon" art style it isn't as simple as just "video game that looks like crayons" and every time Nintendo's tried to do the same thing on later systems they went too hard on the realistic artsy look.

brilliant graphics and effects, average as frick audio, boring game.
took a lot of rom space and nintendo needed a custom chip for various graphical effects used in the game. expensive to produce.
Yes.
100%, it was my first video game literally ever
This is one of those games that is awesome to play but becomes a fricking butthole trying to 100%.
That snowboarding bonus level boils my piss
The game is good in small doses. Playing it for more than half an hour is a chore though, unless it’s your first time playing

I loved the game when I was a kid. Replayed it a year or two ago and I don't think it holds up that well into adulthood.
That's okay. Some games are timeless, and some are just great when you're at a certain stage in life.

Based! Me too!

dude what?
Do you think Dumbo was is the only piece of media that is allowed to use a stork carrying a baby in a blanket?
I like the final boss music
Never played the game btw

It’s great as long as you don’t try to 100% it. The only reward you get is unlocking the only genuinely bad levels in the game.
More Monkey Madness is platforming bliss
yeah pretty much this. 100%ing yossi island is a chore.
It's a little itchy.
Hell no, worst game in the Mario franchise.
Yes, arguably the best 16-bit game ever made and almost certainly the greatest platform game ever
I love it!
I love it
