my first was a Digital Doggy, because stores didn't have a Tamagatchi until i got one later. i think i wanted a baby t. rex like my friend but the store my mom took me to didn't have it. or maybe i just liked purple. my brother eventually smashed it with a hammer when the low battery alert went off.
i was really bad with my first digimon. i'd always feed it until it refused to eat because that seemed optimal to me at the time.
I had a blue one. I dropped it in the toilet and my grandma who got it for me got a replacement by scamming vendor she got it from claiming she bought two and only got one. I guess growing up during the Depression turns you into a hustler.

that sounds pretty good in theory, but maybe not the best to play on such a tiny device?
it's just a series of mario golf meters with the speed of their oscillations determined by dice rolls. and little animations you can watch if you want. There is some strategy in who to fight at what level and what items to use. Some digivolutions require finishing a specific range of quests. losing a fight has a small chance of injury, and 20 injuries in a stage can result in death if you don't immediately press B 100 times

you put them in battle mode, touch them, data is exchanged so it can determine who wins, then it plays animations of the battle after the outcome has already been decided and tells you who won
the second digimon can be faked with just an arduino, two resistors, and two wires
the 2021 X version has suspend and three save files so you can always be ready if you have a friend with one.

Sega should had sold separate VMU with games already included in the memory. Even if the Dreamcast failed the VMU itself could had successed atleast. Frick it pains how much missed potential this thing had so much could had been done with it especially during the peak of pet simulator games.
Pocket Station did have a bunch of games designed just for it, basically installation discs that added games like PDAs had. Not sure if the VMU got anything like that.
they actually did a few with other kaiju from that godzilla game too. if i remember they were actually released shortly before the console itself. but honestly by the time the DC came out in the west the vpet craze was already played out, it barely lasted a year.
Modern Vpet with color screen, deeper mechanics, quest mode+elements from the Digivice handhelds, maybe a new interaction gimmick where you scan QR codes or can link to wi-fi/blutooth devices to collect data to craft special food/digivolving items. Hell if they can fit a camera in it, give it AR capabilities like Pokemon GO. As long as none of it requires a companion phone app to access certain features.
Then, also release a modern console game that can interact with the Vpet. Make it basically a console Vpet game where you raise multiple Digimon and rebuild a farm/town like World 1, but with more control over the development of its facilities using Data you collect(from defeated enemies or data you collected from the Vpet). Would be basically a first person dungeon crawler with a team of 3 Digimon, including your Vpet main if you transfer them over. Digivolving would be treated as a temporary power up form(1 level higher), until you collect enough resources/boss items to permanently stay in that form.(so like only after defeating a Devimon boss could your guys access that evolution path)
Nah, i want essentially Shin Megami Tensei, Digimon Edition, where you can raise a team to explore first person dungeons, but overall still being an expanded experience of the Vpets.
A Digimon reskinned Palworld would also be cool though.
Ehh, the handhelds have always tried different things. Most westerners are only familiar with the classic designs which are iconic, but Japan got all kinds of crazy gimmicky lcd pets with stuff like barcode and even texture scanners. Some of these came out in english lands, but in limited runs so they never became really well known outside of hardcore fans or if you were lucky and came across them in a toy aisle. Even the Digimon X was originally a very different design before its re release. I think its fine to do these more exotic ideas from time to time in addition to the classic designs, especially if they are cross compatible. At the very least they can release more stuff with a colored screen capable of showing off characters closer to their official art.(like the new Digivice)
Also what were those Kiddy PDA things that let you send text messages to recipients in range of some niche radioband? They flopped because they launched when actual cellphones started to get popular. I think LGR reviewed them once?
not the only one. i let a kid across the street borrow it to talk to a kid down the hill, in exchange for me borrowing an N64 game. i made him promise to wash his hands before touching it but he returned it greasy. i was obsessive about not getting my stuff greasy because slippery game boys and playstations are not fun

Shoulda messaged them and been all like 'hai :3 a/s/l??'.
Honestly though I would have thought those things were cool as frick when I was 10. They would have been cultural phenomenons had they been realised at least a year earlier.
At one point these things were so huge, teachers in class had to tell that if they hear the goddamn things, they'll be consficated.
I was gifted one for christmas a couple years ago as part of a "90s nostalgia shovelware package", we played with it for a while but we had no idea what's going on, the thing just kept transforming into a different animal all the time
I like that in the age of smartphones and OLEd screens these things still exist.
There is something incredibly charming about their them and their real 20x20 px simplicity and tactility. It's just not the same as a program on a smartphone.

NTA, but it's "useful" for some things, but pretty much anything it can do can be done better by other devices.
You can use it as a universal remote, but it'd be much worse than just buying a 10+ year old harmony remote.
You can clone RFID and NFC devices, but that's entirely dependent on the security on those devices.
You can use the wireless antenna to check signals around you, but it's not too accurate.
You can maybe use it as a garage door opener, but only on old ones (it'll even wiener block you from copying some remotes).
It's one of those things like a Pi or Arduino where if you don't already have a specific use case in mind just from hearing the specifications/capabilities, it's going to end up sitting in a drawer. forever.
The whole point of things like Pis and Arduinos, is that you don't need a specific use case. They were literally created to let children create all kinds of different electronic gadgets using the same device without having to acquire the set of skills traditionally required. I can't even imagine what kind of person would impulse buy one and then toss it in a drawer because they were incapable of finding a use for it.
I did have a use for it.
But then my needs for it went past what it was capable of.
So now it sits in a drawer because I don't have a use for it.

I always think I like them but whenever I try to get into one I always lose interest after like an hour or two of tending to it. Loved it as a kid but I do not have the patience these days.
Digimon X lets you freeze it so you don't need to do anything, but the digivolution timer stops while it's frozen. It also has two save slots so you can have up to three at a time. maybe not worthwhile if you don't have a friend who has one and shows up to the same basement shows to battle you during punk time delays
There was a PC version of Tamagotchi that added it to your desktop. Idk why the frick Digimon never got something similar, it seems like the most obvious shit ever. Make it a virtual pet× bonzybuddy + some little rpg mode akin to Yoda Stories or some shit where you navigate the Digital World.
i still don't understand how there isn't a good one on androids or iphones yet. i mean like a real retro looking one, but completely original that mogs the old ones into oblivion.
It would be soulless slop with microtranactions and gacha gay elements and just completely miss the charm of being a dedicated unit instead of one of many apps you have downloaded.
this, I'm sure there are millions but the whole appeal is in the limitations. it's why the most popular tama/digimon models today are still the ones most close to the originals, and not the color ones with modern features.
Of course its a video game. Bandai themselves even classifies them as such on their product pages. A Tamagotchi has more gameplay then some other stuff people classify as video games like visual novels, many casino games or even braindead match 3 stuff on cell phones. A Digimon is an even further advancement over that with competitive elements and deeper stat raising mechanics. In a way, its not that different then Dragon Quest 1 where you are leveling up one single character the entire game(especially on the newer ones where you have CPU opponents). You have an end goal (reaching Ultimate level), you have a post game/hi-score/bragging rights(how long your creature lived) and all of these digital pets have fail states (if you allow it to die). There are also plenty of secrets to discover in regards to what conditions need to be met in order to reach what growth paths. Virtual Pets exist in a kinda cross section between RPGs and life sims. A character raising game and also fits in the evolutionary like somewhere between Little Computer People and The Sims.
If anything, the only reason people seem to not think Digimon is a video game series, is because outside Japan, the anime greatly overshadowed everything else in the franchise beyond the LCD pets.
i very distinctly remember seeing an anime girl vpet in a magazine a long time ago because i wanted it really bad. i think i also saw one at this video game store that sold japanese import stuff that i used to go to. i think it was like an anime girlfriend sim thing. i can't find any evidence of this on the internet. anybody know anything about this?

they're supposed to be more passive, the fun comes from the surprise you get when something happens unexpectedly when you've almost forgotten about it rather than long-term play sessions.
Fun story! Fox Kids had this drawing contest one time when I was a wee lad. I think it was for Haloween; and I think I put in a drawing of a bunch of characters (one of them was definitely batman) going to a house to trick or treat. My mom sent the letter and I think a few weeks or a month later we got a call that my drawing was picked as a winner. I got to go down to their headquarters in my city and pick out three prizes. One was a toy action figure from a show I had to look up to give you the name: mystic knights of tir na nog an irish power rangers type of show. My second toy pick was one of these virtual pet toys. I remember raising a dinosaur but getting really sad whenever it died. I manages to get a full evolved form once or twice though. I can't remember the third toy I pocked, maybe it was two. But anyways I was so psyched about it. Good memories. 🙂

Digivolving would be treated as a temporary power up form(1 level higher), until you collect enough resources/boss items to permanently stay in that form.(so like only after defeating a Devimon boss could your guys access that evolution path)
>save sega schizo: digimon edition
You would like Palworld.
Nah, i want essentially Shin Megami Tensei, Digimon Edition, where you can raise a team to explore first person dungeons, but overall still being an expanded experience of the Vpets.
A Digimon reskinned Palworld would also be cool though.
part of the charm is the bare minimum design that makes it cheap enough to leave dangling anywhere it fits and a battery life measured in months
"pretend smartphone for babies" isn't going to sell for what it would cost
But Tamagotchi already does it.
i don't know about others, but i would not make space in my purse for a Digimon this big
>"pretend smartphone for babies"
Well it couldn't be a real phone because those are soooo mainstream and I'm way too edgy for that.
Do Skannerz count? That's the only thing like it that I owned.
Were those things popular?
Also what were those Kiddy PDA things that let you send text messages to recipients in range of some niche radioband? They flopped because they launched when actual cellphones started to get popular. I think LGR reviewed them once?
Cybiko
i got scammed into wanting and getting one
Were you the only person at your school who owned one?
not the only one. i let a kid across the street borrow it to talk to a kid down the hill, in exchange for me borrowing an N64 game. i made him promise to wash his hands before touching it but he returned it greasy. i was obsessive about not getting my stuff greasy because slippery game boys and playstations are not fun
i also saw some in range at school
Shoulda messaged them and been all like 'hai :3 a/s/l??'.
Honestly though I would have thought those things were cool as frick when I was 10. They would have been cultural phenomenons had they been realised at least a year earlier.
>Were those things popular?
I don't think so. I only ever saw me and my sister with one. Never saw another kid use them in the wild.
They were popular but overpriced in comparison to the other vpets available at the time so it was only the rich kids that had them, in my experience.
Yeah i want modern features, but if these ever just becane phone apps, they would loose all the appeal for me.
You guys remember Neopets? Thwy should have turned *that* into an App unless child safety shit stopped them.
Prefer brick game handhelds if we're talking LCD toys
yeah I love vpets
recently realised the digimon ones are more fun than Tamagotchi
I want to get some of the pedometer pets too the dragon quest one looks fun
do any of the digimon or tamagotchi ones have a pedometer?
Digivices do
wtf digimon is woke now?
Sort yourself out, tubby.
Cringe
Based
how did gigapets and nanowhatevers compare to tamagotchi?
https://virtualpet.com/vp/
http://www.tamenagerie.com/
I really, really like this one. The website shows off it’s animations, it looks surprisingly decent. (Like, compared to the usual simple generic pets.)
https://gigapets.com/
>grey and gold Digimon X was $12 yesterday
>today it's $19
>the blue and pink i was gifted got cheaper today
>on VPN and private tab, and checked price tracker
amazon silly
>Tamagotchi x Evangelion- Evatchi
i kinda want one, but not for what it costs considering the ball chain can easily break during my usual activities
frick, this is very relevant to my interests. is there an English version?
my gf got me units 0, 1 & 2, havent opened them yet, kinda just left in packaging as collectables
You sicken me
ok gayboy
anyone have a flipper zero?
a local furry showed me both of his. they're handy, even for legit stuff
>they're handy, even for legit stuff
any examples? I love the concept but not sure I can justify the price
So now it sits in a drawer because I don't have a use for it.
if you have the cable and SD card, you could at least set it up as webcam appliance for when you want to monitor anything in the kitchen
So you fell for the meme and bought a memeberry to memeulate, only to realize it was shit. lmfao.
Nah, I knew that wouldn't work well. I used it as a basic home server. But then my needs started to heavily outpace what I could reasonably do with it, and I ended up building out a huge frickoff tower to put in my closet.
I still don't see how this is anything but a (You) problem. The absolute best case analogy would be you bought size 6 shoes and are upset that you outgrew them. lmfao.
I always think I like them but whenever I try to get into one I always lose interest after like an hour or two of tending to it. Loved it as a kid but I do not have the patience these days.
Digimon X lets you freeze it so you don't need to do anything, but the digivolution timer stops while it's frozen. It also has two save slots so you can have up to three at a time. maybe not worthwhile if you don't have a friend who has one and shows up to the same basement shows to battle you during punk time delays
how long would it take to fully evolve on the x?
10 minutes
12 hours
24 hours
36 hours
40 hours
48 hours
?? hours
each stage takes a specific amount of time. digivolutions are determined by level, quest progress, and care mistakes
Here's a Tamagotchi board game. There's an optional ruleset that includes using multiple Tamagotchi
how does that even work
Here are the rules 1/2
2/2
There was a PC version of Tamagotchi that added it to your desktop. Idk why the frick Digimon never got something similar, it seems like the most obvious shit ever. Make it a virtual pet× bonzybuddy + some little rpg mode akin to Yoda Stories or some shit where you navigate the Digital World.
bump for tamagotchi
Please don't don't bump my thread if you have nothing to add. New threads are free 😉
I want to frick melodytchi
I looked it up. I was hoping for something else...
low test
i still don't understand how there isn't a good one on androids or iphones yet. i mean like a real retro looking one, but completely original that mogs the old ones into oblivion.
The remade originals are much cheaper and have a nostalgia factor, so I'm not sure the limitations are the main appeal (outside of the LCD display)
were those pikachu vpets any good? i imagine it was probably just a cash grab
They were okay, more the hype of having Pikachu around and stuff.
I always wondered if these were considered videogames. Does that make Digimon a videogame series?
You are probably thinking of the Sakura Wars spin-off of the Pikachu pet that Nintendo released. One of the handful of times Sega collaborated with Nintendo prior to them going 3rd party.
my memory is fuzzy but i just remember that there was a girl's face on the screen so i think this is probably it. thanks!
This it? https://sakurawars.fandom.com/wiki/Pocket_Sakura
English guide for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/SakuraWars/comments/vnmxyw/ive_made_a_full_english_guide_for_the_pocket/?rdt=55243
My family likes them. They're neat, but I always want just a little more of a game out of them.
they're supposed to be more passive, the fun comes from the surprise you get when something happens unexpectedly when you've almost forgotten about it rather than long-term play sessions.
Digi dot mons would be more fun if i could name my dot mons gamer words xD
