Yeah 7C and later levels has a lot of negative space filled with spikes but even in that level there are at least some small alternate routes on a given screen. They are usually used by people desperate to shave off 2 seconds of play time but there is still more than one way to beat a level usually. Not to mention early levels are nowhere near this spikey.
It's because they remove the old system of lives/continues. Supposedly getting rid of that "modernizes" games, but what it really does it provide an excuse to make the platforming as inane and moronic as possible since you know the player can die 100 times and just try it over and over until they force their way through it. It's an artificial challenge whereas a classic platformer rewarded being good at the game in a consistent way and had reasonable challenges.
Shovel Knight doesn't use the life system and it has good "non-modern" gameplay. I think people just see and ignore the word precision in precision platformer, then wonder why it starts to ramp up in difficulty as you get later into the game.
Shovel Knight is built around being able to brute force your way through the game as well, take the Phase Locket for example. You don't have to play it that way, but it's definitely amenable to it.

There's also talk about tapes or special golden strawberrries etc... is that for repeat play of an area? Also if you re-do an area is there someting to indicate those pickups you already had vs those you're missing?
For the strawberries, it changes the part where In the ending, where they look at the strawberries on the cake. The best outcome doesn't need to have all strawberries, just enough, which is still a lot. Getting all the strawberries get you a golden strawberry. There are b-side cassettes that are additional harder levels and after beating them you get c-side cassettes. Which are even harder but short.

Yeah 7C and later levels has a lot of negative space filled with spikes but even in that level there are at least some small alternate routes on a given screen. They are usually used by people desperate to shave off 2 seconds of play time but there is still more than one way to beat a level usually. Not to mention early levels are nowhere near this spikey.
It's because they remove the old system of lives/continues. Supposedly getting rid of that "modernizes" games, but what it really does it provide an excuse to make the platforming as inane and moronic as possible since you know the player can die 100 times and just try it over and over until they force their way through it. It's an artificial challenge whereas a classic platformer rewarded being good at the game in a consistent way and had reasonable challenges.
Shovel Knight doesn't use the life system and it has good "non-modern" gameplay. I think people just see and ignore the word precision in precision platformer, then wonder why it starts to ramp up in difficulty as you get later into the game.
Shovel Knight is built around being able to brute force your way through the game as well, take the Phase Locket for example. You don't have to play it that way, but it's definitely amenable to it.
Gameplay is fine, get it on sale and skip all the dialogue. This tip also Works for for Fire emblem fates

The best outcome doesn't need to have all strawberries, just enough, which is still a lot. Getting all the strawberries get you a golden strawberry. There are b-side cassettes that are additional harder levels and after beating them you get c-side cassettes. Which are even harder but short.

I just started playing this last night. Legitimately a fun puzzle/difficult platformer, ignoring all the trannny retcon shit.
So what's the deal with the collectibles? Do they unlock additional content, endings etc? There seems to be a certain amount of strawberries in a given area and at least one secret crystal heart thing. There's also talk about tapes or special golden strawberrries etc... is that for repeat play of an area? Also if you re-do an area is there someting to indicate those pickups you already had vs those you're missing?
