Buy the trilogy, play them in order. All other Kawase games are trash.
Blade Strangers is a pretty decent fighting game if you want more Kawase. Bazooka is garbage. I haven't played Fresh enough to know if it gets a passing grade

I'm curious, how did the anons in this thread find out about Umihara Kawase and what made you start playing them? What especially sold me was the music. It's fantastic and adds so much.
l would eventually find out about Shun being on PS1 and Japan only, but then discovered it was ported to the DS along with the Super Famicom game so I wound up importing that as well. I was surprised that the games were not only remaining relevant and was shocked and happy when Sayonara was announced.
I will admit, losing all your lives stings, especially if one particular level is giving you trouble, but it's also part of the experience. Umihara Kawase is a maze with doors leading you forwards and backwards depending on the routes you take. You can go through the same set of doors again and again, or take a risk and try new ones and see where they take you. At least the game automatically unlocks levels in the practice mode the moment you enter them; so if a particular course did wall you, at least you can retry infinitum until you get it right.
Though honestly Umihara Kawase is definitely a game where I don't fault people that want to use save states, BECAUSE of the fact levels do get very hard and some doors require the utmost precious to gain access.
I went to lans aorund '99-'00, got a bunch of emulators. Played Umihara at some point after and it always kinda stuck with me. I also got into Gamecenter CX really early, and the episode cemented it for me

I personally think lives and the idea of a complete file reset is pointless because at best you're going to just grind so many lives the games spam at you you might as well not even have a counter, and resetting yourself back to the game basically means a permanent no death run when some games simply cannot be designed like this if they last hours to even days on end to complete.

Yeah, that's how the first few hours of play can feel. Keep going, you eventually adapt. Also, the games have a very arcade-like progression by design, though Sayonara has a mode that allows for infinite tries. You can also practice any stage you've reached until you get it down in these games in general.
Not the same thing but the only other close example I can think of is Fake Crash that was made up for a Japanese ad, and Naughty Dog liked it enough to put him in the next game as an easter egg, and then playable in CTR.

I've wanted to play them ever since watching the GCCX episode. Unfortunately none of the torrents I can find have seeders so I gotta hope the sale that was going on is still a thing when I get paid Tuesday. Umihara Kawase - Balls to the walls hard. The rubberbanding is very tight and very not bouncy making some tech on ceilings very hard. Some of the stages are unforgiving as well.
Umihara Kawase Shun - Made some of the earlier stages manageable but goddamn, some of the later stages actually need perfect execution. They kinda eased the rubberbanding on this one making some of the tech easier.
Umihara Kawase Shun DS edition - same as above but on the DS
Sayonara Umihara Kawase - Some of the stages are ass as in an ass to play with since it's larger. They added the baby mode characters but it feels like shun but the hook is a little loose.
Umihara Kawase Fresh! - It feels like a shun engine and physics but they added story mode so you get to collect items and go from point A to B then watch a cutscene. The production this time is very good and the environment looks nice for a change.
Bazooka is a glorified score attack, even the multiplayer. Its most unique feature is the fact Umihara is fully voiced, but outside of that I could only recommend it to the most diehard of Umihara fans and even then it's better to know what you're getting into.

It's been so long since I played it, but I recall it being one of the later Vita releases where they started popping up the notification that system features were disabled during gameplay to squeeze out extra performance. The 3DS one was early in the lifecycle of the system so they were more restricted and of course a PC isn't a 333mhz mobile processor
The series has merit as it is genuinely gameplay/player expression driven, but the MC is also big tiddy anime tomboy bait so it is what it is. If you want a bomb ass 2D platformer, definitely check out the first one or Shun, or Sayonara if you want something a shade gentler.

Blade Strangers is a pretty decent fighting game if you want more Kawase. Bazooka is garbage. I haven't played Fresh enough to know if it gets a passing grade

playing the games right now, and I already hate that classic platformer philosophy of "lose all your lives and start exactly from the first level lmao! this is such interesting game design! and definitely not a contrived waste of time with no difference between overcoming a challenge or not!" inb4 morons compare it to dark souls run backs, where the entire levels and every mechanic is explicitly designed around that with shortcuts and estus management being a thing.
It simply isn't that interesting of a mechanic, and makes it arbitrarily punishing.
Another problem I have with the games...is that the controls feel weird. For some reason I can never do a diagonal fish hook consistently, which brings us to the problem of...no stick controls. Come the frick on man really? They couldn't allow for analog controls when porting it to steam? It's not about skill or anything, it just makes inputs more tedious and subject to mistake than is even necessary, the action isn't even really that hard, it's just inconsistent and inconvenient man.
Other than that, the game was pretty cool and interesting, until all those problems started manifesting themselves. Which is ironic since the second problem contributes to the first problem, and the first problem, makes the fact that the second problem keeps happening, all the more annoying.

What especially sold me was the music. It's fantastic and adds so much.
l would eventually find out about Shun being on PS1 and Japan only, but then discovered it was ported to the DS along with the Super Famicom game so I wound up importing that as well. I was surprised that the games were not only remaining relevant and was shocked and happy when Sayonara was announced.
I will admit, losing all your lives stings, especially if one particular level is giving you trouble, but it's also part of the experience. Umihara Kawase is a maze with doors leading you forwards and backwards depending on the routes you take. You can go through the same set of doors again and again, or take a risk and try new ones and see where they take you. At least the game automatically unlocks levels in the practice mode the moment you enter them; so if a particular course did wall you, at least you can retry infinitum until you get it right.
Though honestly Umihara Kawase is definitely a game where I don't fault people that want to use save states, BECAUSE of the fact levels do get very hard and some doors require the utmost precious to gain access.
I went to lans aorund '99-'00, got a bunch of emulators. Played Umihara at some point after and it always kinda stuck with me. I also got into Gamecenter CX really early, and the episode cemented it for me

I personally think lives and the idea of a complete file reset is pointless because at best you're going to just grind so many lives the games spam at you you might as well not even have a counter, and resetting yourself back to the game basically means a permanent no death run when some games simply cannot be designed like this if they last hours to even days on end to complete.
You are whining about going back to the beginning in a game that is hard programmed for you to win in 30 minutes even if you really suck.
Just actually learn the mechanics and movement so you stop dying, and then have fun playing the game!

Yeah, that's how the first few hours of play can feel. Keep going, you eventually adapt. Also, the games have a very arcade-like progression by design, though Sayonara has a mode that allows for infinite tries. You can also practice any stage you've reached until you get it down in these games in general.
I've never been able to beat the original. Don't know what it is about it. Even on "harder" levels I felt Shun was more manageable.

Umihara Kawase - Balls to the walls hard. The rubberbanding is very tight and very not bouncy making some tech on ceilings very hard. Some of the stages are unforgiving as well.
Umihara Kawase Shun - Made some of the earlier stages manageable but goddamn, some of the later stages actually need perfect execution. They kinda eased the rubberbanding on this one making some of the tech easier.
Umihara Kawase Shun DS edition - same as above but on the DS
Sayonara Umihara Kawase - Some of the stages are ass as in an ass to play with since it's larger. They added the baby mode characters but it feels like shun but the hook is a little loose.
Umihara Kawase Fresh! - It feels like a shun engine and physics but they added story mode so you get to collect items and go from point A to B then watch a cutscene. The production this time is very good and the environment looks nice for a change.

Bazooka is a glorified score attack, even the multiplayer. Its most unique feature is the fact Umihara is fully voiced, but outside of that I could only recommend it to the most diehard of Umihara fans and even then it's better to know what you're getting into.
I hope we finally get the trilogy on Switch.

FYI: Syonara Umihara Kawase on Vita has just enough loading time between lives it can really become noticeable if you're used to the 3DS or PC version

It's been so long since I played it, but I recall it being one of the later Vita releases where they started popping up the notification that system features were disabled during gameplay to squeeze out extra performance. The 3DS one was early in the lifecycle of the system so they were more restricted and of course a PC isn't a 333mhz mobile processor

The series has merit as it is genuinely gameplay/player expression driven, but the MC is also big tiddy anime tomboy bait so it is what it is. If you want a bomb ass 2D platformer, definitely check out the first one or Shun, or Sayonara if you want something a shade gentler.
Both. I say Sayonara isn't as good as the original or Shun and Fresh is shit. But Shun is REALLY good.
