He did his job wonderfully, whether you like him or hate him the simple fact that you know his name or face means that you know from where he came and that's the only thing that matters from a marketing point of view.
In all honesty? No, and that's mainly because his "fan"base became a bunch of self-absorbed schizos. Until they all die out, keep him away to humble their shallow asses.

I miss the early seasons Ash, not the constant character revamps they threw on him each new series starting with Hoenn onwards. That said his retirement was long coming and should've happened a lot sooner to keep the anime feeling somewhat fresh and interesting.

Again post from people who still don't understand Anipoke and see it as some serious plot driven shounen. Pokemon anime from the start was a slice of life gag anime on Ash's adventure like Doraemon and Crayons Shinchan. Anime such as this run because of their characters, not plot. That's why Anipoke started going downhill after Brock left.
Not to mention protagonist rotation never really worked out except for Gundam and Jojo.

Have you even cheek latest Precure? They brought back Nagisa and Honoka so many times that they never left the show at all.
At this point Horizon was better off bringing Ash back as a side character that helps new protagonist from sidelines.
They returned only for the finale of the DEEN show.
The movies are a fair case, though.
They also appeared on episodes 21, 22, 36, and 37 of HUGtto! Pretty Cure.
