Safari Zones are neat in theory, but in practice it's a section of Pokemon being sectioned off into mid-late game where you probably already have decided on your team and it's not worth switching in any of them.

well usually the unique encounters are powerful to compensate. hgss's zone not doing this is why it's the worst. 90% of the shit you find there is stuff you can get elsewhere or shitmons.

a Safari Zone would've been really cool in Unova, could've made for a pitstop to get some non-Unova mons during the journey.
I bet it got scrapped because they wanted to keep the campaign all Unova and creating even more Pokemon for the Safari Zone would've been too much, so they cut it and just never brought it back.

HGSS has the worst piece of shit Safari zone in the series

HGSS is a game that loves to waste your time. Between the safari, voltorb flip, poke athalon grinding, lack of exp thanks to the moronic rematch system and weak ass frick wild mons.
What was a 30 minute sidequest in Pokemon Emerald or plat becomes a 100 day torture to get 1 fricking species. As if breeding and the battle frontier weren't massive time sinks you would actually want to engage with, HGSS adds multiple unnecessary new ones.
HGSS is a truly terrible game and the only Pokemon I recommend you cheat in TMs, stones, rare candies, and Pokemon or you will waste your life doing this shit for minimal rewards

To be fair, the mons that are locked behind a long time gate are usually stuff like pseudo legendaries that SHOULD be hard to obtain.

This. There's some actual strategy to it, not just hammer A until it pays out or goes into reel time or whatever and then you have to time your A presses. The RSE roulette wheel also wasn't too bad, with some outcomes becoming way more likely as you fill slots with balls -- but its payouts were always so small as to make it useless next to the slots where you could get the occasional 777 just pressing A.

It also helps that Flip actually has worthwhile payouts if you can make it to high levels. I'm pretty sure you get over a thousand per win if you make it to level 9.

Obviously, the way it worked on 2D wouldn't work now.
But, having said that, I can see a new Safari Zone working like this:
    >enter Safari Zone
    >player put in Safari car
    >car goes through a fixed route
    >player controls camera in first person like Pokemon Snap
    >throw poke balls as you ride and keep what you catch
    >like Pokemon Snap, can unlock new routes and encounters

      Anonymous

Snap but you catch them is an interesting concept. Apples and pester balls or similar could lure them out as well as work like baits and rocks. But what part of the old way wouldn't work in 3D?

Steps? Sure there aren't tiles but the player model takes steps, or whatever units of distance the game already uses as a "step" while on a bike or ride Pokemon for egg hatching, incrementing friendship values, etc. Or they could use a real-time timer like the Johto bug catching contest.

Random encounters now that they're all visible in SV? They could either use a gimmick like putting long grass everywhere so you couldn't reasonably see the Pokemon in it, and have random encounters there. Or they could let you see them, it still takes steps to do it this way because you have to walk to make old ones despawn and new ones spawn.

A battle but without your Pokemon model and just ball/bait/rock/run options could work as-is. Though it'd be much more fun to have it all in the overworld, with a Zelda style Z-targeting system to help you aim your balls, baits and rocks in the usual 3rd person view the games use. When they flee they just run away from you, you can chase after them, and then they're gone if they either reach the despawn distance or run into a hole or thicket. Bait could distract them if they're fleeing but lower the catch chance, and rocks could raise catch chance but also have a high chance to make them start running.
