Depends on whether I actually get to make decisions in the game, if not then I use default since I don't care to see people doing stupid shit with my name.

If they have a very recognizable canon name, like picrel, then I leave it as is. If they have an obscure canon name like the Persona games, or they don't, I name them something generic like Mark, John, Roger, etc.

I usually go with canon in Persona because not having a Japanese name would ruin the immersion for me.

I guess it's possible. But in 4 you're living with your uncle on your mom's side which implies you're Japanese pretty heavily. But I guess you could cope by saying one of your parents was foreign.

But the character is not a foreigner. If you're going to start pretending, why not pretend the whole game is good while you're at it?

I used YOJIMBO MASHIMUSHI in all caps for persona. Making it all caps was convenient so I knew they were talking about me because all Japanese names sound the same to me.

Same. Except I'm a bit more thoughtful about it. If the main character seems to be an actual developed character, I'll go with the default canon name. Like Cloud. But if the main character is a quiet pseudo-character you simply control, I might change his name to "Hero" too or something else.

      Just call him Hiro.

        >Hiro
Why is the Deliverator so equipped? Because people rely on him. He is a role model. This is America. People do whatever the frick they feel like doing, you got a problem with that? Because they have a right to. And because they have guns and no one can fricking stop them. As a result, this country has one of the worst economies in the world. When it gets down to it -- talking trade balances here -- once we've brain-drained all our technology into other countries, once things have evened out, they're making cars in Bolivia and microwave ovens in Tadzhikistan and selling them here -- once our edge in natural resources has been made irrelevant by giant Hong Kong ships and dirigibles that can ship North Dakota all the way to New Zealand for a nickel -- once the Invisible Hand has taken all those historical inequities and smeared them out into a broad global layer of what a Pakistani brickmaker would consider to be prosperity -- y'know what? There's only four things we do better than anyone else:
        >music
        >movies
        >microcode (software)
        >high-speed pizza delivery
The Deliverator used to make software. Still does, sometimes. But if life were a mellow elementary school run by well-meaning education Ph.D.s, the Deliverator's report card would say: "Hiro is so bright and creative but needs to work harder on his cooperation skills."
So now he has this other job. No brightness or creativity involved -- but no cooperation either. Just a single principle: The Deliverator stands tall, your pie in thirty minutes or you can have it free, shoot the driver, take his car, file a class-action suit. The Deliverator has been working this job for six months, a rich and lengthy tenure by his standards, and has never delivered a pizza in more than twenty-one minutes.”

I prefer to keep the default name whenever possible.
In cases like Pokemon and Persona that don't have a canon in-game, but have one in supplementary materials like anime and manga, I look up those.
If that is not a thing either and/or the character is completely customizable, I have several names I tend to use, depending on the kind of character and the setting. In things like SDV and MonHun (I know, not RPGs) I have my usual default nickname.
If there's multiple random characters, like handling a full custom party/guild in a DRPG, I use either the nicknames of my friends/acquaintances, or of our TTRPG characters, or something random.

The first time I played FF4 as a kid, I did. But after awhile the characters just didn't feel like the type that should be renamed.

Default if the name is cool like Cloud, Squall or Zidane. Custom is the name is some lame shit like Tav.

    Default
If there's no default I name all the characters as 3-5 letter animals or colors
If I end up really liking the game I retire a couple of the names

  10. 3 months ago

Default, especially in games where the text prompt already has their name punched in. Games where I have to look it up are less so, especially if the name is too long and I have to fudge it or I don't like how the name sounds.

Default. I like going with the intended way.

FFX has an alternative character progression, that allows deviating from the intendes roles. I regret picking that, since it feels off. FFX did a great job making every character unique and useful.

If there is a default name (Cloud Strife, John Shepard, Aedan Cousland) I always take that. In the event that there isn't one, I take a lore appropriate name (Elder Scrolls, Mount and Blade, Baldur's Gate). If the setting has no established naming conventions then I pick something that suits the character. Like with Encased if I'm going white wing nerd, I'd name him something like Archibald. Or a blue wing engineer maybe something like Hank.

Using joke names, your name or the names of people you know is reserved for moronic homosexuals.

If it’s a game with an involved story I keep the canon name. If it’s a game like Legend of Zelda where the story is basically window dressing, I go for timeless classics like ASSFACE, b***hbreasts, URMOM, or the ever amusing UFRICKINGASS,U

Naming my MC my own name just feels self absorbed.

It's pointless to rename a character in most JRPG because they already have a name and backstory picked out for them, I don't even know why it's an option.

In japanese RPGs the protagonist is a character you play rather than being you mostly. So I look for a canon name sometimes but gnerally don't care, except in cases where I can customize the protag.

I don't really play western RPGs
